I'm thinking of upgrading my 350 Pentium 2 to a 650mhz (the fastest my mobo
will take). Should I stick with Intel or go with the AMD Athlon? Which
will be quicker? It seems that AMD don't have the problems that used to
crop up in various newsgroups with the older cpu's, is this so?

First thing, your MB will take chips faster than 650Mhz ( multiplier is not
set by MB anymore ), maybe it will take faster chips without even updating
your BIOS. Second, you can't plug AMD's Athlon in your current MB. It will
only take Intel Celeron&PII&PIII processors. Your MB also needs to be able
to provide the adequate voltage for the processor ( 1,5V for Celeron2 and
something a bit higher for PIII Coppermine ( 1.6V i think )). But if you
will replace your MB than AMD Athlon/Thunderbird or AMD Duron is a possible
alternative.

Andrew.
You lot didnt read his question
Its obvoius he knows he can only fit the Intel in his MBO
What he is asking is which is faster the AMD or Pen 3
As far as i know from reviews & bench marks go for the AMD. Its cheaper as
well. For same price as P3 600 u can get AMD 750(Much faster)
Just need to get a 80 MBO

If you don't want to change mobo, and maybe powersupply (the athlon's can
be a little tricky with a too weak powersupply)
You should go Intel and if your mobo supports it, a P650 can easily run
in 800 if not more.

I had an
intel seattle2 that said it would support up to 933. i updated the bios &
plopped in a 600e that i bought cheap off ebay, wouldnt boot. error message
said this mobo doesnt support 600e or 600eb. after reader more on intels
site, i found that the mobo had revisions & later revisions supported the
higher speeds. my revision could not.

In all recent Intel processors multiplier is hard-locked ( MB has nothing to
say at which multiplier the chip is running ). MB may incorrectly report the
speed of the chip but it should still work OK.
