GP3 Thank you

Is GP3 a true simulation or an arcade game?

Larry Hawes said he would skip GP3 and wait for World Sports Cars because of reports that it felt 'on rails'. Many replied that with all aids off GP3 was challenging and rewarding, while Jan Verschueren and others maintained it was too easy and arcade-like after hours of testing. The debate later turned personal between Ken Barrow, Jan and Eldred.

Thanks to all who have put in their 2 cents concerning GP3. I have decided to pass on the purchase of GP3 and wait for WSC. I consider myself perhaps a little too sim-centric to purchase a 'game' that may not simulate the driving experience. Just too many posts about sticking like glue, riding on rails, canned spins etc. Please don't defend GP3 as I have no interest in arguing the point I simply want to thank all those who put the energy into their reviews so we can make decisions a little more intelligently. You're very wise not to buy it in your case. It is indeed an arcade game, a very good one but still in essence an arcade racer. Cheers Gerry

Just driving this thing through the chicanes and fast corners at Hungary gives me goose bumps. It's actually the first "modern" (GPL disclaimer) that makes me almost believe I'm driving an F1 car... -- l8er ronny Your mouse has moved. Windows must be restarted for the change to take effect. errrrrr Jan that's kinda the essence of motor sports there buddy, I don't think you can criticise the game for it. I believe Hakkinen, Schumacher et al will be using pretty much those tactics come Sunday. FYI, I played it for six hours (just to make sure I didn't like it <g>), not including the two hours it took me to configure it correctly. I immediatly turned all aids off, as to assertain whether in this version it was actually possible to control the car without them. I think I gave it fair shot to impress me, instead, it managed to show me everything I'd grown tired of in GP2 plus some brand new shortcomings. Add a driving model / AI level that isn't even remotely challenging - only thing that thwarts progress is the seemingly arbitrary rear-breakaway point - and the balance becomes very negative indeed. PC Gamer mentions "easy for the beginner to get into yet challenging for the expert"... I say that's the biggest lie in print so far this year (and I'm not even an *expert* simracer). I disagree with the race simulation comment too. If there is such a thing in GP3, it's very basic. Winning is just a matter of blatting the car around the track seconds faster than the AI, meanwhile dodging the slower ones. The weather is an interesting modifier, but if you took in the forecast and keep your head you won't be threatened. I won't say the game is not worth having for some, but it's not the "must buy", "genre breaking" effort some would have you believe. Bottom line: if you can still stomach the thought of driving GP2, you might be ok with GP3, but only if you've got the right hardware (i.e. 3rd generation 3D card) and accept it won't get a workout. thats impression i got from most other f1 games, no car feel, on rails, canned spins, but gp3 is first game, that feels, like gpl, that you are in control of a beast heres a test...theres a new version of silverstone about with high hills, try and launch the car from the hill (you will have to go in reverse around the track) and see if *anything* is canned...i tried it, it isnt..it destroyed the car, but i got air ! gp3 is a *great* game if its set up correct "Dan Belcher" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > >GP3 is f*cking awesome!! > >give it a chance!! > > I gotta agree with Rik here. Agreed. In GP3, with no driving aids switched on, driving Monaco on the hairy edge scares the hell out of me, puts butterflies in my stomach, and also makes me grin from ear to ear. Throw in a monsoon downpour and I nearly wear myself out from the concentration and throttle control required. By the way, I'm a fair to middling sim driver, but I can't agree with the HyperSim guy's comments about GP3 being unpredictable. I find GP3 to be every bit as predictable as GPL for when things are about to go wrong (things just happen faster, as you said, so maybe Cook's reflexes just aren't what they used to be - grin). I can also modulate the throttle during furious starts in the rain, catch a drift etc. I think it's brilliant. I also think GPL is brilliant. Stephen

Your loss then. I will not go into defending GP3, but I wanted to say this story shows that people who love to be negative in order to get attention can indeed affect the decisions of the not so strong minded. Don't worry, it sadly happens in real life politics as well. -Gregor P.S.: I'm off to do some long powerslides around the wet Silverstone.

Totally agree with them too! Reconsider your decision not to buy GP3, it really is the best modern F1 sim around at the moment. It looks (too) easy but please try to go on the limits: You'll notice it's good. Yesterday I "did" ungaroring and suddenly lost it while going too wide (concentration loss) It scared the hell out of me because of the suddeness. IMO there's no "canned" routines whatsoever in GP3. You certainly can catch spins (if your in time that is). BTW. I really suck at Hungary, could somebody send me a decent setup for this track? The AI is much too fast for me in the twisty (3rd gear) section. Somehow I have to get off the throttle in order not to go too wide. Jan (a GPL lover too, really love the new solitude track!!) All I have to say is that GP3 ran like a dog on my old PC with a Voodoo2. I took the plunge and sunk my savings into an 800 Thuderbird and a Geforce2; and I feel it was worth every cent. This game is worth having just to experience the wet weather treatment; adds a whole new dimension to a race weekend. And yes I love GPL too; but GP3 is just so much fun. Hehehe, it's surely the goal of every racer, I don't know if it's the essence of motorsport. Maybe I should have mentioned it takes no discernable effort to reach that status, which is not even remotely the essense of motorracing. If you happen to be seconds faster than everybody else in a competitive series, it means you outprepared the hell out of everybody else (like McLaren and Williams did for a couple of years), not that you reduced wing and put taller gears in. This describes my experience almost spot on! This is one of the few sims where weight transfer really is an issue. Try Interlagos put the differential to low and then go around the right-left slow corner combination (I do not know the name). You'll go from oversteer with trailing throttle, to severe understeer when you counter it, and again to oversteer when pushing further, the front and rear tires interchangibly begging for your mercy! All the time, you can feel completely in control. Oh, and a note to all who feel that GP3 lacks feel. I believe that you cannot experience any sim if you have the speed sensitivity enabled. Disable that, put your steering lock to 10 degrees or lower (more only for Monaco), and drive. I can assure you that any on-rails feel will disappear if you are driving on the limit with such a setup, although you will probably need to adjust the setup of the car as well. -Gregor

Well I wouldnt dismiss it totaly while its not GPL it still fun to play, but its not a F1 Sim it 's just a F1 game really and very good F1 game. A F1 sim would have 107% rule Proper black flag rules Not being able to get 2 wheels on the grass in corners and continue straight at full thr. Surviable crashes at over 200mph with very little damage. Diffrent car modles and physic models based on the proper cars in the 98 season. All this can be fixed with some of the 3rd party hacks and editors but it should have been done bt GC/Hasbro. Hotdog

Dry my eyes? Sure, from laughing at you too much. Like I said, I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. So, I don't react as stongly as you seem to. If you want to jump on anything/everything someone says, then so be it. Knock yourself out... Tell you what - you win, I give up. You can have the last word. Of course I read his post. That's what newsgroups are for. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt - something you apparently think is a waste of time, possibly because you're too polarized against his opinion. > >Cheers.....KenCheers yourSELF. Ken Barrow wrote... > TWO HOURS to configure GP3 ???? > geezuz, its as well you haven't anything difficult > to do ...... Thanks for that. FYI, I do complicated stuff from time... you try designing a control circuit for Class D electric machinery, for example. The difference being this endeavour is documented. There are standards which outline what the circuit must conform to to get approved and each component in the circuit comes with full documentation. The GP3 readme was less than helpfull as to which set of "switches" were appropriate for a given 3D card, merely stating they'd gotten it to work, but not _HOW_ they got it to work. Which leaves the user with trial and error. It took me about two hours of fiddling untill I was happy with the resolution/framerate/detail/processor occupancy balance. And, believe me, I do sacrifice "eye candy" for playability. > ><snip> > arbitrary rear breakaway point ?? You obviously have > no idea how to change your setup to counteract this. You can do things to curb the tendency, sure, but ultimately you need some final oversteer to go fast. It's no use noodling up the rear end to the extend it slows the car down. The trouble with GP3 (JLGP2) is that it sometimes lets you lean on the car to a certain extent in a certain situation and the next lap by you're down the boondocks doing the same thing. Now, you can (probably successfully) argue you, the driver, did something different, but the point is you can't detect that. Hence "seemingly arbitrary" breakaway point. > ><snip> > I gather your soooo good that you are able to beat ALL > the AI cars in ALL the tracks at ACE mode with all aids > off ?? > Yeah, GP3 is real easy ...... Ehm, yes, with minimum practise actually (at the 5 tracks I tried at anyway). Which is partly to GP3's credit, as I couldn't do it in GP2 without steering help. Maybe it's the FF, I don't know. Like I said, I'm no big deal at GPL (and I wasn't at GP2 for that matter, to be anywhere near competitive you needed to be able to lap the Ace AI, twice ;-)), I don't see why any reasonably competent simracer should have any problem with GP3. Especially if he/she kept his/her Crammond sim skills up using Gp2. > ><snip> > OK then - don't say it.
