I can't really help you with sites as I don't have any bookmarked. Just do as I do and "discover" the sites when they're plugged here. Couple of days of lurking (and reading back through the ng some) should get you sorted. The most important patches for GPL are obviously at the Papy site, i.e. the V1.2 patch, the D3Dpatch (if you need it for your 3D card) and the no-disco patch. How to divide your time between the sims depends on how much simracing experience you have. If you consider yourself an old hand at booting simulated performance cars around a virtual track without program aides, I think the best thing to do is to install both and switch between them at will (or when you get stuck/bored in one). If these games are your introduction to simracing leave GPL aside for the time being and concentrate on GP3 until you can consistently beat the game at Ace level. If you then go to GPL you will experience the full effect of this game and truly understand why it still receives the praise it does here. Jan. =--- druidh wrote... > Just picked up GPL <snip>

Just picked up GPL for the princely sum of 6.99 (that's UK pounds) after all the rave write-ups in this group - you guys better be right!! and I have a couple of simple questions. What are best sites for patches etc? As I've also just got GP3, do I have to concentrate on one to "get into" driving style? Thanks Druidh (remove _wizard_) for repl.

druidh <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YD0k5.17353$[email hidden]... > What are best sites for patches etc? > As I've also just got GP3, do I have to concentrate on one to "getinto" > driving style? I'll repeat my message from a few posts ago for you: The first thing you should do is download version 1.2.0.1 of GPL. This version includes force feedback. You can find it here: http://www.papy.com/gpl/download.html If you have a non-3dfx graphics card you have you may also want to download the D3D patch whilst your there and the GPL discofix would be useful if you plan to race online. If you have a force feedback wheel add the following to the file core.ini which is in the gpl directory to enable force feedback: [ Joy ] allow_force_feedback = 1 ; Use FF if device has it force_feedback_latency = 0.02 ; force feedback latency (secs) force_feedback_damping = 5.0 ; force feedback damping coefficient max_steering_torque = 250.000000 ; steering torque in N*in giving max device force The above are the settings I use with an LWFF. Opinions differ on the best settings. Fiddle around until you find one that suits. Some useful sites for you to look at are: For a general overview go here: http://simracing.com/alison/gpl/ For the latest car and track add-ons including the sublime Solitude go to the GPLEA here: http://www.kotr.de/org/ For the highest quality add-on dashes go to the GPL Spares Factory here: http://129.100.29.86/gpl/ For other tracks including Road Atlanta, Imola, Brands Hatch and the O-Ring visit the US Pits here: http://www.theuspits.com/owheel/gpl/gpl.html Once you have driven a lap at each track get yourself a ranking here: http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/ When you want to race on-line go here and download WinVROC: www.vroc.net If you want to race on-line in a low pressure environment I also suggest you check out the VROC-F2 club. We race online in the F2 cars (advanced trainers). Racing is excellent and we are very newbie friendly. You can find us here: http://www.egroups.com/group/vroc-f2/ Tim Wheatley runs a Legends based site including an extensive forum here: http://legends.sports-gaming.com/index.html And finally some other sites of interest include: http://www.the-fastlane.com/ http://users.bart.nl/~hansvd/links.html http://www.parc-ferme.de/fastlaps.htm http://lightsoutracing.simplenet.com/trackguides/gpl/ http://home.c2i.net/thepaddock/ http://warpedracing.figc.net/gaugepages/index.html http://www.kolumbus.fi/ghuttu/ I hope that's enough to be going on with. DruidH. Run for your life. If you have any addictive impulses, ever spent a couple hunderd bucks trying to beat Defender when you were a kid, have a competitive streak, like fast cars, or have a passing interest in the concept of sim racing, you should turn off your computer by beating it into little pieces with a large destructive implement of your choice. Read a book. Take your kids to the beach. Join a wine club. Get into drunken bar fights. Engage in deviant sexual acts strangers. Do pretty much anything you want--heck I know people who are doing ok with heroin. JUST DON'T PLAY GPL. They got me. There is still hope for you. Drive the Coventry/Cooper for a while at a few tracks before you jump into the Lotus or Ferrari. I found the Coventry/Cooper a must drive when I was starting out. SLG "druidh" <[email hidden]> wrote:

It must be just me, but I find the Ferrari *easier* to drive consistently than any other car - maybe it's because I handle it like it's a rally car (and therefore post nice slow times ;-) It jsut feels easier to "catch" when I get it wrong, whereas in the so called *easier* cars I have too much tendency to oversteer - maybe I'm just sacrificing speed for ease of driving, but I just thought I'd put my twopenneth in (as a GPL addict of only 2 weeks!) I think the Ferrari is reknowned as one of the easier cars. Certainly it's easy compared with the lotus (with its sharp torque curve) or the pointy eagle. The Cooper is probably easier still (but too slow). -- Richard G. Been driving that *&^% Eagle again and now I can't drive any of the other cars! It is just too different, or at least for me it is. Then again if I could keep from screwing up that last jump at the Ring, I could be under 9:00! So I am not too pissed at the Eagle. SLG Richard G Clegg <[email hidden]> wrote:
