Chris,
I seem to remember reading somewhere that GPL only supports Voodoo video
cards.

I'm visiting a friend who has a new(ish) computer and he's having
problems getting it set up properly for running GPL. Here's his system
specs:
HP Pavilion 9something computer
P-III-600 I think. It is a P-III though.
Riva Nvidia/TNT2 Vanta AGP video card.
128 Meg Memory.
It's really strange. We instlled and ran Road Atlanta last night. At
800x600 resolution in training mode with no corner marshalls or any
other cars, he was getting about 30-32 fps running in D3D. I thought
it might be the Microsoft FF wheel, but I disabled the FF in the
core.ini file and didn't notice much of any difference. Maybe 1 fps at
most. My P-II-300 and V3-3000 combo will run this track at 1024x768
pegged almost the whole time at 36 fps with the same settings running
in Glide. These results are typical for all the tracks, not just RA.
My suspicions lie with the video card. The mirrors don't work at all
and he's getting intermitent lock-ups within GPL as well. I tried to
get the latest drivers from the Nvidia site, but they wouldn't work.
It's really frustrating because I *KNOW* his computer is much faster
than mine so it should run GPL better than mine. Here's a couple of
thoughts:
1. I know the Microsoft FF wheel gives a large frame rate hit. Does it
still cause the hit even when the FF is disabled in the core.ini?
2. Where do I go to get the latest drivers for the video card? The
Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia website won't work. The computer won't
finish booting up.
3. I had him kill all the background applications I could find and it
helped the lock-up issue some, but didn't cure it. If it were my
computer I'd format and reinstall Win98 because I really HATE all the
crap HP filled the computer with. That's not too much of an option,
though, because my friend doesn't want to mess with it and couldn't do
it himself.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Chris,
I've no idea why it locks up, but did you check the
refresh rate of the adapter when using D3D? If
it is 65 Hz and VSYNC is used, the fps is never more
then 32.

I get 36fps on a training session now on a P2 333 using the D3D patch.
First, you need to uninstall all drivers for the card and also uninstall the
TNT properties programs using their uninstaller.
After that setup the PC to use a standard VGA driver and reboot.
When the PC has rebooted you can run the NVidia drivers setup program. This
must be done after the original drivers *AND* property pages have been
removed otherwise the PC will lock up.
Hope this helps :)

No. The Detonator drivers are available but the card has Riva printed
on it so we tried installing the Riva drivers. We're going to retry
the drivers we've got tonight and try the Detonator 2 drivers if that
doesn't work.
Thanks for the help.

I doubt that's it since I've seen 36 at various times at 640x480.

I probably did something in the wrong order the first time, but did you
get a windows warning message that said "This driver wasn't made for
this video card" when you chose and installed the newer NVIDIA drivers?
Thanks for the help. We'll try it out tonight.

Until recently, GPL only ran on Voodoo or Rendition cards. But Papy
have *finally* got around to releasing a D3D patch. Should have been
there in 1998, of course, but still...

There is now a beta Direct3D rasterizer available for download at
www.papy.com
It's unsupported but works fine. One of the developers wrote it so he
could enjoy his TNT card with GPL... (I'll take enlightened

The only time I ever got an error or windows message telling me they
were wrong was when installing a Nvidia driver was when I tried to
install the PCI drivers for a AGP card, and they did not work . . .
DOH!
I would reinstall the drivers and make sure I had the right ones.

I'm sorry I can't remember exactly what the wording was.
Out of interest, I upgraded my OS to winME on that PC and it automatically
installed the Nvidia drivers not the ones for my card.
Is it the detonator 2 drivers you are trying to use ? They are what I used.
