I am still trying to figure out a way to play GP3 with other people. I know
that the game cannot be played over the internet yet. And more importantly,
I am not a computer person !!
However, I see in the manual that you can play between players that are in a
local area network. I have a DSL connection with Bellsouth. Does that mean
that I would be able to play with someone else who also uses Bellsouth's DSL
service. I would imagine that we are considered to be in the same "local
area network", each with his or her own computer ID number.
Does that mean that if I find someone who has GP3, who also uses Bellsouth's
DSL, we would potentially be able to play GP3 in multiplayer mode?
I have not read much about modem to modem connections, any comment from
people who have played GP3 with each other using their modem?
thanks,
Gostal
You can actually play against those ppl, but it
is not considered a LAN, it is a WAN (wide-
area). A Lan is normally when all computers
are on the same network, same site, ie a school
or something, or like me, I have a 4 computer LAN
in my house with my buddies...
Hope this helps - GP3 isnt too good at multiplayer,
as it says in the readme, it helps if the two computers
are really very quick - because the game runs at the
slowest person's machine speed.
I think its possible to play GP3 over the Internet,
simply through TCP/IP, but as stated earlier, its gonna
be very slow and not advisable - tho I'm not sure if it
works...
When I tried to do a TCP/IP LAN game, it asked me
(in windows) if I wanted to connect to the net, but I
answered no and continued the game, so I can see
that it may work...
What you considered a LAN (ie Bellsouth's DSL service)
would be classed as playing over the Internet, so
you can try it, but I wouldn't expect great results...
I played my mate who has an AMD k6-3 350 and the game
crawled in comparison with what it did in single player,
I have an Athlon 600...this was on a 100Mb/s UTP (cat5.)
LAN too, so god knows what the Internet would be like.
Hope it helps,

Phil.

How is GP3 through a dial up?
I mean, can you just enter a guys number and play a way wit a 2 player game
ok? I was wondering if I could have a race with my friend that way.

>Yes, you can. Be prepared for a massive drop in framerate though. My friend
and I have two similar computers. Both are well equipped for a decent
framerate combined with PO. But when doing a dial-up game (exactly as in
GP2) and one of us crashes, the other suffers from a sudden framerate drop
to only a few frames /second. Furthermore, when the other player decides to
'take a look' at the others' driving capabilities, framerates will drop
considerably to a point where it's no longer playable. Dial-up (33K6) in
GP3 sucks.
