Wish lists for Papyrus's next title after GPL
Posters suggested what Dave Kaemmer and Papyrus should build next with the GPL engine: Can-Am Legends, a 1960s Indy sim, or most often a modern CART sim, since none had appeared since IndyCar Racing II. Others doubted a vintage title would sell and noted EA's new NASCAR developers. The idea of releasing the engine as a user-editable racing toolkit was debated.
Automated summary.

My first choice would be a Can-Am Legends sime (1966 - 1968) - great cars
(Chaparral, McLaren, Lola), tracks (the full Riverside, Road America, Laguna Seca,
Mosport Park, Bridgehampton, Watkins Glen, etc.), and drivers (Jim Hall, Phil
Hill, Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme, Dan Gurney, our old pal John Surtees, Mark
Donahue, etc). However, this would probably make GPL seem like a mega-seller in
comparison.
I think the consensus choice of a CART sim is a good one. You get a nice
combination of road courses and ovals - a little something for everyone except the
folks who just don't dig open-wheeled racing. They should time the release of it
to match that of the upcoming Stallone film, maybe even have a cross-promotional
tie-in.

With such an amazing sim engine (GPL) Papy should produce something new like CART
:-) I'll take Touring Cars, SCCA TransAm, Grand-Am, CORR, Baja, F1 -- heck
anything. That also includes historical stuff, but the new ground breaking sims
would be my first choice.

I don't think Papyrus is ever going to do another "Legends" game. But if
they did I'd buy it.

I'd buy that one in a heartbeat. :-)

Nobody except us would buy such title. Most of the simmers want something
else, and most of the gamers don't give an arse about vintage racing.
That's a fact :(
It's pretty easy that a new CART simulation would please to all the mass,
both the hardcore simracers who have been awaiting a sequel to Icr2
(especially with the new game engine), and also for the mass gamers. The
market is not saturated at all compared to Stock-car or F1 racing games, so
it can only be a good hit. Icr2 was a very good seller actually. Around
250k If I remember correctly.
And I'm sure CART will someday wake up and restructure it's marketing
approach to keep the fans and get new fans. They are shooting themselves in
the foot if they either charge too much for their license or don't want any
serious simulation of it's series.

I'd love to see the tire choice for the Grand Prix of Antarctica.

Although an Indy title is not such a bad idea... what I really would like to
see is 'CART 3'. The time to do CART 3 is *NOW* - more than ever!
The FedEx Championship is coming over to Europe next season - making it
(like F1) a championship with rounds on every continent - bar Africa.
Please Sierra/ Hasbro let Kaemmer devote his time to something else than
stockcars!! CART 3 would *sell* like cold beer on a hot summer night!!
Please - please - pretty please!!!!!????

I hate to say it, and I'll probably get flamed for it, but Sierra is going
to start loosing money on Nascar. I feel that the people who watch Nascar on
TV will enjoy EA's version better (not including all you hard core type's),
than Sierra's. Espically if EA's gets better over the next couple of years.
Most people who watch Nascar are not going to be worried about setups, and
tire temps, they just want to race that 24 car (incert your favorite car
here).
Maybe I'm wrong, well see.
Also, it's seems like such a waste. To use the GPL engine to go round and
round, and round.......
EA has given up on the current developers of the Nascar license. They
have brought an entirely new team in for Nascar 2001. It could be
interesting....
dave henrie
Of course it can't even begin to approach a sim or EA will cancel it...
i.e. Janes Warthog, Janes Flying Aces...both within just days(ok maybe a
month or two) of completion.

Actually, CART is coming to Europe so it's a great opportunity to make
such a sim that will have success in a market traditionally in favour of
racing simulations.

For vintage sportscars wait for WSC. Out of the box it will be a

It's been 5 years since a decent CART sim was released (ICR2), so it's
about time.

What we REALLY need, is the GPL engine released as a 'Race Sim
Toolkit', leaving the user free to design:-
Cars, including their physics, set-up options etc,
Tracks, including likely weather, surface conditions etc
Series/Championships including bizarre points systems (like the F1
'67), mixed formulas (modern sports cars) etc
then all these talented people in netsville, instead of doing hacks to
existing sims for a compromised idea of some other formula, could do
100% accurate sims of ANY formula, ANY year.
It would sell by the truckload, IMHO
cheers

Nice in theory, but very similar to the 'ever-lasting' battery problem.
i.e. After selling you 'Race Toolkit 1.0' or whatever they have suddenly cut the
majority of sales of any future racing sims they may wish to sell. Bit like shooting
themself in the foot.

They share their knowledge
so 3rd party developers can make Planes/Scenery etc. yet they have released
3 versions of their sim in the last 3 years which have all sold as well as
the last one.
