Changing novice race length in GPL, and the GPAL saga

A user asked how to change the novice race length in GPL and was pointed to a utility at The US Pits. Mentions of the long-promised GPAL utility triggered in-jokes, and Jan Verschueren recounted the background, which he called one of the greatest wind-ups in Usenet history, originating in a GP2 offline league. David Buttery described his own GPL Assistant program.

Hi, first let me thank everyone here who has responded to my prior posts; you guys have never steered me wrong. I was wondering if there was a way to change the length of a novice race in GPL other than by changing the length of the full GP race in the .ini file - maybe a way to change the % of total distance? I'm sure I'll forget to reset the right race length if I do it otherwise. On the other hand, who am I kidding? I've played this game fairly religiously since getting it as a Christmas gift in '98, and I've still never run a GP length race... David

There is a program for that at www.theuspits.com, I'm not sure if it works with patched versions though...check it out under the GPL section. Well, Once upon a time I was involved in Randy Harris' GP2 Racing League (off-line league for GP2). Through it's second year of competition it had become very popular indeed (peaking at something like 700 active drivers), so it was decided we needed a form of automated results processing. A member of the league took on the programming project, dubbed "The Motorhome". As you probably know GP2 savegames are not easy to hack, so progress on this program was slow. Also, to keep things simple, the Andy (the programmer) decided everyone should use the number 26 car in the game. A fact which was publicized via the leagues private newsserver and the rules amended. Anyway, the 2nd season ended without the program surfacing and Andy got caught up with real life issues in the inter season. So the 3rd season got underway without automated results processing, each driver being required to hang on to his/her savegame files. Couple of GP's into the season the program was launched and functioned perfectly... provided you used the number 26 car in the game. A number of people had used number 27 (their teammate using number 26) and thus couldn't submit their times (and therefore saw their efforts annulled). One person to complain about this on the newsserver was our mutual friend Mark Seery. I responded to him, that, sorry, he should have used number 26 as stated in the rules (I had done the Dutch translation the previous season, so I thought I knew them well). Mark replied, "but the rules say you CAN use number 27!". So I checked and to my amazed the rules did indeed say "26 or 27". I immediately contacted Randy, advised him of the crisis (no way the Motorhome program was going to get patched) and warned him I was going to wind up Mark some more on the ng (this was not your average ng ;-)). I then posted the infamous line I fed you after which Mark flipped his lid. He wrote a very angry public letter to Randy (who, even though I warned him, seemed very amazed ;-)). Anyway, things were smoothed over and the league died a natural death with the release of GPL (afterwards being revived for the die-hard Crammond fans), but it's nice to exploit this issue with Mark now and again.<g> Jan. =--- Andre Warringa wrote... > <snip> > Ok Jan: HIT IT! > > Andre

ATM, it's a huge unfinished mess (as I say in my readme, one day I hope to have a huge *finished* mess), and only up to v0.50a, but if you're that interested, you can get it from my website (URL in my sig). GPL Assistant was written for my own use, but I though I might as well stick it up on the website to make people even more depressed as to how useful [no, we still don't say it - Ed] might have been if it had ever turned up. Just to reassure you, GPL Assistant has *nothing* to do with [it's that program we don't mention again! - Ed] or its author, [uh-uh! He's persona non grata here and all - Ed]. -- David.
