Hi there, I DL'ed some new tracks people made for GPL and it blew me away ! This has real potential.... I was wondering if anybody has ever made any modifications to the GPL model so that the car was more easily driveable, like modeling more recent tires for instance ! (I don't care what car it models, just something easier to drive)... I kinda gave up on gpl a long time ago when I managed to spin 8 times after missing a turn at what felt to me like 40 mph (complete loss of the suspension of disbelief for me, as good as the physics are)!!! Not knocking the sim, I just don't have the patience, or my speed perception doesn't match that of the sim, which either way makes it not fun... I actually take my car to some race tracks I downloaded and thought GPL could be a great tool to learn them faster, at home, if only the car handled a little less viciously and I could concentrate on correct lines and braking points ( I mean my karmann ghia has more grip than the F3 cars) ;-) Given how nice the new tracks are, it's be really cool if someone did something like that....(adj grip, hp, etc...) To my knowledge, no one has hacked GPL to that level. If they did, you could kiss online/offline leagues good-bye. Some things are better left alone. ::) WSC is coming...only 7 or 8 months to go!(We hope!!) Thanks for the response ( an the lack of flames, too)... > The answer is no Greg, and it would be a disaster if it everhappened. It would kill the wonderful racing we now have online. I don't see why that should be... I mean, a hack that lets you alter grip for instance could be made with a different version of the gpl exe, and the online stuff could check for that, no ? > Getting a handle on gpl takes time, you've got to make an investmentin it [....] it will start happening for you. I realize that, I did when the game came out and turned decent time eventually... But here I am just talking about re-using the excellent modelling and track add-ons for a different purpose, having fun and learning tracks I actually take my 911 on.... The cars in GPL are too skittish for me to learn stuff without investing, as you say, a lot of time in "re"learning the game... I was just hoping there would be such a hack somewhere... I love the game, I know it takes time, I am still a bit annoyed at the lack of speed perception though, it seems you're doing 40 when you're in fact doing a lot more, so sometimes it's frustrating to spin when it looks like you've done nothing wrong... I realize you can adapt to the game, but I am trying to adapt to the real thing ( I go to the track about once a month these days), and I'd rather be able to tweak the game to behave like my car.. I know, this is selfish, but it seems a waste to not be able to reuse than great physics modeling sim !!! ;-) Greg.

The answer is no Greg, and it would be a disaster if it ever happened. It would kill the wonderful racing we now have online. Currently everyones up against the same level of dificulty. If individuals could alter the cars traction, power, downforce, or weight, it would blow the whole gpl online world to bits. >I kinda gave up >on gpl a long time ago when I managed to spin 8 times after missing a >turn at what felt to me like 40 mph (complete loss of the suspension of >disbelief for me, as good as the physics are)!!! Getting a handle on gpl takes time, you've got to make an investment in it, if you persist it will come, and it will be worth it. If your not willing to do that, there are more accesable driving games out there. The trade off is, because they are easier they are easily mastered, and once mastered they are no longer interesting. No driving game has held peoples attention like gpl has, and as a result the online racing has developed to an impressive degree, and some very talented people have created some amazing additions for it. Take a more forgiving car like the Cooper, stick with it, accept the challenge, it will start happening for you. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C. I sure hope so Greg, I basically feel the same way. As far as online racing is concerned, I really don't care, I don't race online, so that is a problem that the online racers can sort out. I would like to get my moneys worth out of this thing too ! Tony

Yes, but then you'd need to hack the online stuff too, doubling the difficulty of producing the mod. GPL is not designed to be altered, i.e. a mod is not self contained as in the 3D fps's. > <snip> I am still a bit annoyed at the lack of speed > perception though, it seems you're doing 40 when you're > in fact doing a lot more, so sometimes it's frustrating > to spin when it looks like you've done nothing wrong... This is contrary to most people's experience with the game. For me GPL is he only sim where you know you've made a mistake before the inevitable happens. I've seen far more complaints about other sims in the "spinning you out for no reason, unlike GPL" -vain. > <snip> but it seems a waste to not be able to reuse > than great physics modeling sim !!! ;-) There's a lot people (myself included) who feel the technology should be licenced to other developers (similar to Quake/HL/Unreal/etc..), Papyrus seem unwilling to do that, so I guess we just have to prey they'll produce something of GPL calibre again (hopefully more accessible to make it a commercial success in the process). You say your Karmann Ghia has better grip than F3, but what does grip really have to do with learning a track? Grip changes on a minute by minute basis from one corner to the next dependent on a wide range of factors. Some it is measured by experience, but most of it is measured on the fly by your rear. No game is going to prepare you for this. So, run F3 and try to come close to the best times at: http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/gpl/ If you can do that, your racing line will be set. If not, don't even worry about using every bit of available grip in real life, you'll just end up hurting yourself. - George

Your last sentence is very true...About F3, I have tried them, but I find those cars have not enough power to catch any slide...same frustration... Once again, I am sure the cars are modeled well, I was joking about the ghia, but it's a perception thing to me. I don't seem to get the correct visual info from the sim, that or the tire technology has improved in leaps and bounds, probably both... You say "what does grip really have to do with learning a track?", well it has a lot to do with it if I am spinning when I thought I was doing 25 mph! I mean, let's assume I have a pretty good idea of what 60mph "looks" like in a turn at a race track...so I get frustrated when I go to what "looks like" half as fast on the computer screen, in a car that should be better in grip than mine, and spin 8 times... Once again, I CAN adjust my speed in the sim and lap reasonnably fast at GPL (I can learn ;-), but it just does not match what I am looking for/have experienced in my car on a track (I know this is selfish, I said so before, I am trying to use the sim for something else entirely)... So either the sim does not model speed well for ME (guilty!) or the tire are made of wood (for ME), and I am simply looking for a patch... Regarding your other point, I understand it well, sure you can go 25 mph in real life to learn a track, but you won't learn it as well as if you were going faster... at low speed you hit apexes because it's easy to do, at speed it's something else entirely ;-) Anyhow, I don't want to start a religious debate about GPL, I just wanted to know if there was a tweak available, and it appears there isn't any.
