Nate and I won our first event in our Cobra!
We built the Cobra from a kit in just six weeks. Only three days after
the car hit the asphalt for the first time, we took first and third in
the autocross at the New England Replica Challenge. Two days later we
took second and third in the Time Trial on the Loudon road course.
The Cobra was dead reliable, though we do have some things to sort out
with the steering and brakes.
I am very sure that my many hours with racing simulations (mostly GPL)
over the last two years was a big factor in my taking home the first
and second place trophies. The long hours with GPL helped both with my
car control and with learning a new course.
I was driving a car that is much more powerful than anything I'd
previously driven in real life, but I was very comfortable dealing with
power oversteer, due to the time with GPL's GP and F2 cars. Several
autocross runs and some laps on the Loudon road course were run in the
wet. When the tail snapped out under power, my reactions with steering
and throttle were precisely correct, due to the way I'd been "trained"
by GPL!
Also, I had never driven the road course at NHIS before, but I had done
a number of laps in AMA Superbike and knew which way the corners went.
The only turn I had trouble with was turn 8, which has been modified
since AMA Superbike was done.
I was one of the few people not to get lost on the complicated
autocross course (for which there was no course diagram!) I'm sure this
was due to the many hours of learning the many tracks in GPL, which
honed my ability to learn new courses quickly.
All in all, it was an awesome experience, and strongly validated my
belief that seat time in a good racing simulator is valuable
preparation for the real thing.

And I'm sure that you have the MARA logo painted somewhere on the car,
right?

Dave is having a similar experience in the Skip Barber Formula Dodge Eastern
Series this year. They just switched over to using racing slicks instead of
street tires this year (among other car changes), and all the driving he's
done in N4 has helped a ton. He finished 2nd and 3rd in his two races at
Lime Rock in June, and set the track record for the new cars. Then he won
both his races at Lime Rock in July. He's now 6th in the points standings
in the series (see http://www.skipbarber.com/schedule.htm#2000em).

for sharing the PROOF!

Thanks, guys! This was really a memorable experience. Building a car in
six weeks is a major thrash, and doing anything with it three days after
it first ran on the street is amazing.
We took another trophy this week: a third in a COMSCC Time Trial at
Loudon, in the rain.
Whew!

427? 460? Just so long as it's a Ford V8, I'll be happy... (as much as a
Chevy guy as I am, IMO Chevies don't belong in stuff that orignally had a
Ford =)
