For those who will rip the Heat demo no matter how excellent it is, at least
lie and tell us you spent more than 10 minutes with it before running to
r.a.s. to rip it apart. Also, please leave out the, "it's no GPL" comments.
They tend to make me starting yawning uncontrollably.
David G Fisher
Request to judge NASCAR Heat fairly sparks GPL-fan argument
David G Fisher asked people not to dismiss the NASCAR Heat demo after ten minutes or with 'it's no GPL' remarks. This sparked an argument over whether GPL loyalists reflexively dismiss other sims, with sharp exchanges involving Tim Wheatley, Mark Davison and Andrew MacPherson, some later apologising for misreading each other.

Er, it's quite good to have other things to do apart from GPL Andrew, if 2nd
rate sims are things such as GP3 then thank god, I love 2nd rate sims then.
Fact is their much more fun than crashing in turn one with people who "Don't

If all people can do is repeat other people's views, then this newsgroup is
nothing apart from the few people like David who make up their OWN mind.
The rest just jump on the ol' bandwagon like lemmings, having read views
from people in here when the gpl demo was released, or even when gpl was
released, calling it crap... the facts I'm pointing out are proved again,

GP3 is a fine game. It runs well and I enjoy it. The only thing it
lacks is any kind of online multiplayer support. Too many people here
say GP3 is bad based solely on some problems they alone might be
having. If you can't get your wheel to work, does that make the game
a piece of crap? Hardly.
The graphics in GP3 are fine enough: I'll take good physics, good
online play, and decent game options over graphics any day.
Nascar Heat looks pretty good and it will have decent multiplayer
capabilities online. But comparing a Nascar-type game with an F1-type
game is a bit hard to do.

Viper Racings graphics engine isn't that new either - and though
Nascar Heats graphics are very good (a bit blurry on my V3, perhaps
turning off mip-mapping could help), I don't see many improvements
compared to the old engine. Btw, does Nascar Heat support T&L? I mean,
my polygon throughput is 'awesome' (4700 iirc), but things might get a

I respect the opinion of some people who love GPL,(nice challenging physics),
but there are numerous others who sound more like 16 year olds who have joined
the "GPL Gang", and dogmatically dismiss every game as "crap" or at least "no
GPL" when in fact GPL is not the state of the art "fun" racing sim anymore for

Well, I'll humbly appologise if I misread your post :-) It did sound like
you were saying that GPL fans couldn't make up their own minds.
What pees me off is when people complain that "it's no GPL" is an invalid
criticism. That comment means "it's not as accomplished a sim as GPL was"
not "it's not GPL so I refuse to consider it a viable proposition as a
racing sim".
Anyway, see you around...

completely... whether that's an FPS, flight sim, of driving sim. I want to disbelief to
