GP3 is a very good GAME (I never played GP2). Frankly I love it. I love
GPL more and if you don't have GPL I'd buy that and go crazy. However,
GPL is all about pretending you are Jim Clark, if you want to pretend
you are Mika Hakkinen you gotta get GP3 :-) If you want to get a sense
of what an F1 car is really like to drive I suggest you start here:
http://www.skipbarber.com/speedwk.htm :-) (when i put together 8
disposable grand i'm all over that)
That said, a number of people do not like the feel of GP3 and think the
physics model feels a bin "canned" in places. I agree that it feels a
bit strange (hand of god effects, cars push like my civic, can't slide
em) but what the heck to I know. I read somewhere that GP2 and GPL (I
think at Alison Hine's site) are Montoya's favorite car games and GP3
is (so i hear) better than GP2 so it probably has some realism merit
(although I hear Schumacher likes to play MarioKart). If you like car
games, are interested in F1, don't wear a paper hat at work (and have
some time to kill) you might want to drop the $40USD and check it out.

Before you buy.
What's the consensus about GP3: is it a good buy or a good bye? I have
read reviews which reckon even though it has some shortcomings, it's
still an excellent game/sim. As always, however, it is better to get a
wider view... For my part, I want to get a sense of what an F1 car is
really like to drive - even though it might be difficult - and have
some fun too.
TIA

There is much information on this newsgroup allready to make up your mind.
My opinion is: F1 2000 and GP3 are the best for now. Both have different
good features. I like F1 2000 still better, i find it more challeging.
Anyway read more on this newsgroup. F1 2000 needs a faster PC than GP3 (for
most of us)
If you want a real good sim (but really difficult) without downforce etc,
then you should get GPL. Just downloaded it and i think this is the most
difficult sim at the moment (judge only after you updated the game with the
patches!!). I raced GP2, GP3, F1 2000, MGRS2, F1 WGP.....but GPL is the most
difficult!
Good luck

IMHO, it is the current best modern F1 sim, and is only bettered in
simracing generally by GPL.
Buy it.
Just my opinion, not interested in flame wars....

I love it, make up your own mind rather than listening to other.
Buy it from somewhere with a refund policy, see if you like it, if not,
return it.
I love it.

I love GP3 too. (And I also own F1-2000 and F1WGP)

I don't think any of the available games
lets you experience what it's like to drive an F1 car. F12K is reasonable in
that respect, but, as pointed out in other posts, has a hefty minimum spec
requirement. MGPRS2 does a good job too, IMO, but is difficult to get into
and requires a lot of setup experimentation to get a good immersion factor.
GP3 is a good representation of what it's like to be in an F1 race with the
odds stacked in your favour. It runs well (esthetics aside) on most hardware
(except 8Mb V2's) and is generally a well behaved application (unlike
MGPRS2, for example). Undoubtedly it's similarity to GP2 will mean carsets,
tracks, editors, etc. will be popping up all over the place pretty soon.
My only beef with the game is it hasn't progressed from GP2 like it should
have. When GP2 was released Geoff Crammond was a leading sim developer, an
innovator like Papyrus and, more recently Ratbag, Synetic and MGI. There was
a sense of competition for technical merit between him and Keammer. With GP3
he has releases a substandard game in this respect, IMO.
Is it worth spending $40 on? -Depends, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Hard to tell in your case as you haven't posted some reference to which
driving games you like/dislike. I'll take a guess and say: probably.

Of course. If you are any kind of race fan, you get it. Think how many
other ways you blow $40 in no time.... take a family of 4 to the movies, buy
the popcorn etc, bamn, $40 gone in 2 hours for maybe a bad movie. Go to a
pro hockey game, pay $45 for ticket, $10 to park, $8 for beer, $15 for food,
then watch your team suck and get blown out. So, is it really such a big
decision to by GP3 if you are any kind of race fan ????

I think GP3 is EXCELLENT. Graphics are very immersive once you are in
game (stills don't do it justice IMHO) weather is very nicely
modelled, physics have a lovely feel (mistakes can /just/ be 'caught'
when you are really on the ball). However, if you still have your copy
of GP2, only buy 3 of you are a total sim nut, it really is GP2.5,
imho.

That's what I "read" after many-many reviews.
I've done "one too many hours" in GP2 (heck, I think I have every
corner of every circuit memorized, still!).
GP3 will officially release in the U.S. in 8-9 days? Even though it
updates weather and graphics, I can't think of a good reason to drive
an "updated GP2" for yet another xxx-hours. With GP3, it almost seems
like I could copy-over (and use) my GP2 setups!
That, and I still have GP2 installed, with many wonderful
add-ons/tracks/cars/season/etc.
