Using TrackIR head tracking with racing sims

Mitch_A asked whether anyone used TrackIR 3 with rFactor and said GTR and NSR worked well with it. Users discussed USB hub power, Vector Expansion support, whether TrackIR suits racing as well as flight sims, and how it compensates for missing peripheral vision. Larry repeatedly joked that he still did not know what TrackIR was.

Anyone use the TrackIR3 with RFactor? GTR and NSR both play very nice with it. I accidentally ordered the standard version (and they forgot the vector clip) so in the conversation with the rep he mentioned a $30 discount with Pacific Fighters so Im sending this one back for the Pro. Im pretty amazed that after such a short stint with it how natural it feels. I still have a bit of tweaking to do (latency) and the pro's higher res should make an already very good product outstanding. Supposedly GTR (Intl) has a suprise for the TrackIR guys. Anyone have any details? Mitch -- Remove "nospam." to reply. SuSE 9.2 Pro KDE 3.3.2a

Mitch, From what I know, GTR has native support for the TrackIR. I remember seeing some reference to it in one of the .ini files. I'd be interested in hearing your comments on well it works in your racing sims, and how difficult proper set-up is. I've been thinking about trying one myself, but didn't want to be the guinea pig, I guess. 8) I'm mostly into racing sims and it seems to really be geared toward flight sims which I know you're into. Yes GTR does support the Vector Expansion (VE or 6DOF) but without the vector clip I cant try it out durnit. Beyond that though I heard a rumor about something "special" in the International release and a Patch for the German version. Not sure what it is but even in 2D mode I really really like the immersion it provides so the VE and the "treat" should only improve whats already pretty dam good toy ;) As you said I do flight sim but its very limited compared to racing sims. Remember I had a big head start with Flight Sims before Bill Elliots Nascar Challenge so Im still catching up :) I haven't even tried with any flight sims yet. Im heading to LA/Fontana (oft referred as Mexico City North, heh) for the Cup race in a few minutes so I cant even try any till next week at the earliest. No hurry the Pro will be OTW soon anyway. Not sure whether "racing sims" only warrants $150 though. Hard to say but after just a few hours I can clearly see the benefits it offers to Racing Sims. If youre into Ovals maybe not but if you Road Race then most definitely YES imho. Off to the races woohooo! Mitch -- Remove "nospam." to reply. SuSE 9.2 Pro KDE 3.3.2a

One of my main questions is how the TrackIR receives it's power. From a wall outlet or thru USB? If thru USB, will it work through a USB Hub?

NaturalPoint doesn't recommend using a USB hub, but I am using mine with a powered USB 2.0 Hub and it works great. Yes, it's powered by the USB port. I have only tried it in Pacific Fighters and MS FS 2004, no racing sims yet. If I can finally figure out how to get my MS SWFF wheel working again, I will try it with NR2004 and will definitely purchase the new EA one (and perhaps a MOMO wheel). I have the TrackIR 3 Pro with the Vector expansion. -pw remove astericks (*) from e-mail address (use paulwilliamson at spamcop dot net) ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =----

Hi some friends of mine are playing Pacifc Fighters with TrackIR (GTR too) and like it. I asked them, if I should buy TrackIR for GTR. They said, for GTR it is not so important than for flightsims. I think the news for our german GTR patch is Vector Ep. Looking left or right while driving 250 km/h is very annoying. Michael

I have the TrackIR3 Pro as well, and for flight simming I could not go without it now. Since getting back into flight sims my racing time has all but come to a halt, I do want to load up F1CS since it has support for it and see how I like it with it. I too use mine through a powered usb 2.0 hub with no issues. -- Don Burnette "When you decide something is impossible to do, try to stay out of the way of the man that's doing it."

Just to be contrary, I had mine plugged into a hub and very occassionally my IR3 Pro would stop responding. Since I've plugged it straight into a dedicated USB port I've had no problems. I've tried it with a few racing sims and I still think it's primary use for me is flight sims. Cheers, Rod.

I understand how it could be annoying! Wouldn't TrackIR be fun with action games such as Battlefield 1942, Half-life 2, Chronicles of Riddick, etc?.... They may not be able to turn their head MUCH but remember they still have peripheral vision, which we dont have and the TIR makes up for. This peripheral takes some getting used to but it really adds to the realism and gets a thumbs up by me even for racing Sims. Mitch -- Remove "nospam." to reply. SuSE 9.2 Pro KDE 3.3.2a

I am loving it. I just ordered NSR because it works with the Vector Expansion. Hope the game runs on my PC! Can't wait! You'll have to tell us whether you can stick your head out of the window. :P I'm contemplating the vector expansion but it isn't supported in the game I use it with most, IL2. Would be handy too, especially in cockpits that have a lot of obstructions and it's hiding the location of your target! Cheers, Rod.
Hi Don, NSR is NASCAR SimRacing, the latest NASCAR game from EA. You can get a demo of it at 3dgamers: http://www.3dgamers.com/games/nascarsimracing/ It was developed by Tiburon using the ISI engine. Also, there were several people from Papyrus and also from ISI involved in the development. It's getting mixed reviews and there are a lot of us hoping for a patch which apparently is being promised and currently worked on. There's another sim that getting pretty universal praise that's coming out soon - GTR. It also supports TrackIR and the international release on March 11 is supposed to include the vector expansion. It looks like the "international" release is not going to include the US, so we'll probably have to get it thru an import. Thanks Bill. Due to my love for flight simming right now, particularly helo and WWII, I have not done any racing sims in quite a while. Now that the new season is here , may have to at least get some offline racing time going again soon. -- Don Burnette "When you decide something is impossible to do, try to stay out of the way of the man that's doing it." Sure would! I haven't tried it yet with IL-2 or Pacific Fighters, only MSFS2004 and it's pretty neat. -pw remove astericks (*) from e-mail address (use paulwilliamson at spamcop dot net) ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =----

It really added immersion and enhanced my IL2/ Pacific Figthers experience. No way could I fly without it now. Only reason I have not added the Vector yet is because PF will not have support for it, however i did just purchase MSFS 2004, and with BOB on the horizon, I will be ordering the Vector expansion very soon. -- Don Burnette "When you decide something is impossible to do, try to stay out of the way of the man that's doing it."

Larry wrote: > I'm a lot more excited about rFactor than I am GTR... > > Now, what IS this TrackIR thing? GTR seriously rocks. Ive been battling the (very impressive AI) at 94% Psycotic and its about the best racing experience to date imo. Maybe if the RFactor team would give us a more powerful car to try Id agree. As it is now RFactors rice rockets (LFS'ish) are fun but the GT's are real race cars that require finesse, patience and skill not bonzai ;) Track IR is an Infrared tracking device. The standard TrackIR uses single reflective dots and gives you right/left up/down tracking. The vector expansion uses 3 dots and gives 6 full degrees of freedom. Id suggest if youre interested dont even bother with the standard and get the higher resolution of the pro. Big difference in lag between the two. The only games I have that support VE are MS-FS2004, MS-CFS3 and NSR. It really is impressive moving about in the virtual cockpit, though it takes a bit of getting used to. GTR will support VE when it ships in a few weeks. Not sure about RFActor though. Mitch -- Remove "nospam." to reply. SuSE 9.2 Pro KDE 3.3.2a
