Enthusiastic reactions to the NASCAR Heat demo
A poster called the NASCAR Heat demo the best-looking racing game they had seen, and many agreed it surpassed NASCAR Racing 3 in AI, graphics and replays, though some said comparisons should wait for NASCAR Racing 4. Users noted light damage and frequent flips, and found that enabling vertex damage in the config file increased damage but slowed loading.

I have, and I still don't agree. Hmmm...
Considering N4 will be coming out at least 6 months later than HEAT, they
should.

Oh My God
I do not know what the rest of you think of the demo but it is the best
looking racing game I have ever seen in my life !!
Graphics freakin awesome
Superb car handling
Replays are just like TV
EVERYTHING YOU COULD WISH FOR
Running in 1280 x 1024 with everything maxed out and getting 32.6 FPS
P3 700
Ge-force 2 GTS
128MB
What on earth can beat this is beyond me NASCAR 4 will really have to go
some
You said it. The cars even flip!!

I couldn't agree more ! I thought that it was impossible to combine
graphics, physics and gameplay into one dream package. It will certainly
stir up a wasp's nest at Papyrus !
As for GP3, this demo shows how poor that game really is. If you don't
agree, then you haven't tried Nascar Heat .

Right now, even the Demo (which I'm sure isn't showing us everything in the
way of physics and damage modeling and FF) Nascar Racing 3 has been bested.
By far IMHO.
The AI is incredible. Anyone who isn't challanged by this Sim is either a
lap behind or the real Dale Earnhardt.
Unlike Nascar 3, in which the AI 'gives up' on you (especially at Talladega)
the AI in NH will haunt you and haunt you until YOU give up.
I also like the way you can actually scrub a little paint with someone
without immediately being thrown into a non-recoverable spin. Just like
real life.
I like the way you can sustain some damage, and still win a race. Unlike
Nascar 3.
The sensation of speed is awesome.
I've done several 'Earnhardt Style' 360 degree spin-outs and with the proper
steering and shifting simply continued on with the race. That is rare in
N3.
You actuall seem to have _brakes_ that can be locked up, unlike N3.
The way you can lose the tail end if you accelerate too hard and pinch off
turn 2 too much at Richmond is a sign of very good car physics. In N3, you
would just 'twitch' out. NH seems to carry this physic (?) to it's
conclusion, and that conclusion is totally dependant on your ability as a
driver.
I detect NOTHING canned about NH.
The one oddity I have noticed is that pit stops with damage fixing and
without damage fixing seems to be the same. I'm sure this is just a
limitation in the Demo, however...
Nascar 4 may best Nascar Heat, but as of right now, Nascar 3 is old news.
Keeping fingers crossed on the Multiplayer issue. It would be a crime if
this game didn't best N3 in the MP department as well. From what I
understand, we haven't really heard or seen what is really coming in this
regard.
Lot's more to say as the subjects arise.
-Larry (Who thinks we have an easy 'Game Of The Year' winner here.

I am driving in expert
mode, but I can cream a wall at full speed going into the corner with barely
visible damage, and the front right tire doesn't blow out? Does anyone know
if the damage modelling has been toned down for the demo?
Plus, I think the cars flip wayyyyyy too easily, its' almost an arcade game!
But hopefully it will be toned down in the retial vers.

It is rare

But the other nit pick I have is the cockpit view. Maybe I am spoiled by

this distracts me? (Yeah, I know, I'm weird. :)

Have you seen SuperBike 2000? Those graphics are truly amazing. Download
the demo for some eyecandy
By the way things are looking NH and N4 will also be two different 'era'

I just wish that most of the tracks were not ovals in nascar, maybe just half,
but oh well.
Oh geez. Someone just switched on the "Papy Protection Mode".

Nascar Drivers are right up against the wheel.

I never said anything about N4.
Since there is NO Nascar 4 right now, N3 is Papy's current product...
-Larry
Considering N4 was just pushed to 2001 it doesn't even come in to the
equation.

Yes it is toned down.
Try enabling vertex damage in the options.cfg file
"vertex_damage yes"
Then you will see more damage.

Kind of wierd for me - - When I enable vertex damage, it takes forever
to load a race. Does the same thing when i try to benchmark. It takes
3-4 minutes to get past the loading screen. It seems like my pc is
locked up but it's not. It always starts eventually. As soon as i
disable vertex damage, the tracks load in 5 seconds

Yes this is an issue with vertex damage on
The loading time seems different for people.
Only takes about 30 sec to 1 minute here.

They drive that way because a WC race is 3 - 4 hours. It would be very
difficult and tiring to drive with your arms extended for that length of
time.

At least on my system, I cannot enable it on the Daytona Track. The game
locks up while 'loading' every time and I have to hit the reset button.
