I just spent some time running back to back practice laps (30 or so) in both
N3 and the NH demo. I used expert mode in NH, but didn't mess with the
setup. In N3 I used the default Easy setup (Ace is too loose for my
liking). I'd like to hear from those of you who have done a similar test.
A few things I noticed:
I was consistently faster in N3, but that could because of the setup. N3
felt much looser. Physics in NH seemed very believable to me.
In NH, I like the way that the car will get loose and spin around on you if
you get to far on the apron. IMO this effect is better in NH than N3.
I don't like the moving cockpit in NH. That's just personal opinion, but I
hope the full version gives the option to turn it off.
I also hope the full version of NH will give the option of turning off the
extra telemetry info on the in-car view: speed, %brake, etc.
I'm happy to drive a car which you can lock the brakes up (NH)! The canned
anti-lock brakes has been a pet peeve of mine with the N1/2/3 series.
I know it's silly, but I like the animated pit crew in NH.
The option for auto-drive in pit lane is nice in NH. I generally prefer no
helps, but this give me a chance to set pit options, instead of trying to
type while driving.
I think sound is lacking something in both N3 and NH. But the 3d sound in
N3 is a plus.
In NH I miss sound and tactile (FF) feedback when I hit another car, or the
wall. Maybe it's just a demo limitation, but N3 is much better there.
I'd like to hear your thoughts.
I personally like N3's graphics better than NH. NH's seems a bit
cartoonish, at least to me. Perhaps I've gotten spoiled running N3 in
Glide at 1024 x 768 (shame N4 won't have it).

You can get that cleaner look that you get from Glide's edge
anti-aliasing in N3 on NH with a V5 card, at 1024x768 with 2X FSAA it
looks as good if not better than N3, plus you can have framerates in
the 50's rather than locked at 30 like N3.

You never locked up the brakes in the Nascar series? I did it all the time...

- You should have tried the Hardcore mode in NH, would give you the full
feel of the sim and thus a better reference.

You will get used to the cockpit after a while, personnaly I like it since
it gives me more of a feeling that I'm sitting in a car.

After driving N3 for a long time this sim is an eye opener. I race GPL on a
regular basis too and NH is the closest thing to GPL in stockcar I've
driven. N4 will definatly have it's work cut out for it to top this game. NH
seems to be a very well developed game for all racing fans from beginner to
expert and should attract a lot of people. This game should sell very well
and Papy should pay attention to that fact and include a lot of options for
beginners (maybe that's why they delayed it). The only thing I find that is
lacking in NH is the damage model. You have to nail something pretty hard to
get damaged and after watching Nascar for a while it seems the cars are a
lot more fragile than this. I can race around the track and if an AI car is
under me I can just turn into him and use him as a wall to rest my car on as
I go around the corner. N3 seems to be a little closer but then again being
able to bang around a little and still keep up is good too :)
Great minds think alike, I did the same comparisons. I agree with you both
on all points. NH is going to sell well because it's a fun game, and I
will probably purchase it the day it comes out. Having said that , I
believe N4 will be a product better suited to my simulation taste. I have
been racing NH with the Hardcore option, and while I do appreciate the
physics and controls involved, it still comes up a little short. It's kind
of hard to tell when your making contact with someone, or when someone is
making contact with you. I am using the LFFW. And Gary makes a good point,
although he may have presented it backwards, that you can lean on the car,
who is on the outside of the curve and use him as a wall. It's the minor
things, and I do mean minor, that keep it from being the simulation I would
like it to be. I know this is a demo and the full version may be better,
that's why I will buy it. Like I said it is a fun game. Back to comparing
the two sessions, I liked both of them almost equally well. N3 was fun and
familiar, and NH was fun and new. With the addition of the GPL physics and
the other bells and whistles, I don't think it's going to be too terribly
hard for Papyrus to top NH. And I really don't like putting it that way.
NH appears to be good at delivering a solid entertaining product. Papy, I
feel, will deliver a solid entertaining product that will deliver a more
simulating experience that I have come to expect from them. The market is
big enough to support both of these games. Well that's my two cents.

Andrew.
I was the one who made the comment about using an AI car as a wall. And yes
I had it right but so did you. You can use them as an inside wall or an
outside wall, your choice. It's kinda fun but if you get too far ahead of
him he'll push your back end out!
