8:50? The AI leaders in my game to 8:30's and I've also made the player.sts
read-only... :(
Which session are you doing this in?
How do you get close enough in a race to even SEE them? I qualify like 13th or
14th - if I'm LUCKY...
Or, do you wait for them im practice, then follow them?

What I did is first notice that the 3rd place ai driver was getting times in
the 8:50 range (I had already made my player.sts file RO so they didn't keep
getting faster) so I decided I would just try to stick with him as long as I
could from the start. At first I would just spin out in the first 5 or 6
turns before flugplatz, so I'd reset and try again (the glide patch that
eliminates mode switching in the game makes this process much faster).
Then I'd see he would always pull away at flugplatz, so although I couldn't
take the jump itself fast I tried speeding up just after it, and sure enough
found that through familiarity I could go much faster through the next few
turns all the way to the underpass bridge, and keep the AI driver in sight
the whole time! Very encouraging.
Similarly with the next short section where you go fast down into a valley
and up the hill to where the crowd is. I was starting to split the track up
mentally into sections that I knew how to handle, finding that I could
actually make up time against the ai in many of the sections.
Finally it reached the point where, though this 3rd ai driver might pull
away in parts, I found I could always catch up to him at the beginning of
the second half of the track (the Karussell I think). Once you've reached
this point you've succeeded!! He's quite slow in this section so you just
stick with him all the way to the finish line and you're guaranteed an 8:50.
This happens every time, the AI are nothing if not consistent!
Right now I've gotten good enough at the start that by being very aggressive
I can cut off the 3rd ai driver (or push him out of the way) in the first
few turns and am trying to stick with the two leaders as long as possible.
My best times are always on the first lap and I've yet to string together
two laps in a row without spinning out. Just succeeding at that should get
me into the 8:30s, maybe next weekend!

Eldred , have you tried the Ferrari ?
I was firmly stuck at 8.48 in the Lotus and couldn't really find
any more time unless I really pushed it in every single corner
and every time I spun at least once a lap so I'll never know
what time I would have managed.
I took the Ferrari out and found that I could be really
aggressive and survived a number of moments thanks to the car's
forgiving nature , touching the grass etc , which would have
meant curtains in the Lotus. Second lap in the Ferrari 8.42 and
I'm sure there's more to come.
I think the Lotus will be ultimately faster but only if I can
overcome frustration every time I stuff it.

I thought I'd done that... I'll have to check.

Anyway that's where I am right now.Eldred, try using the Ferrari with the push settings that
Alison created for Mosport. I think the gear ratios are the same
at the Ring, but if not change them. Doing this I got to about
where you are now, then the other day I made the changes to an
Alison Ring Eagle in the same proportions that makes a regular
Alison Ferrari different from a push Ferrari (both Alison Mosport)
setups. I then knocked ten seconds off at the Ring on my second
lap with these settings. For me Push is best! Oh, and thanks for
those replays. I am slower then you almost everywhere else and
they are a big help in learning what I am doing wrong.

After installing the game I raced one novice race at monza so the
player.sts would be created, then made it readonly. Just create a temporary
player and do the same thing, and copy it over your main one.

I'm doing this in novice race with 5 opponents. Why bother with a full
field race til you get better; the point is use the ai to help you get
faster by racing against them. Don't bother running practice laps, skip the
practice, and at the start of the race you pass two of the ai immediately
and can get on with the business of chasing the three leaders. After awhile
you can pass the third AI at the start and chase the two leaders and you
will be running with an ai ahead of you in the 8:30s to aim for and one
pushing you from behind in the 8:50 range, so you'll get used to running in
the 8:40s pretty quickly. Anyway that's where I am right now.

Uh, my 8:52 is IN the Ferrari... :)
I can't get under 9:00 with anything else...
