I need advice friends, on building a new system. I have waited till processors reaached 1GHz and have a quote from Thor-tek but they only have the 933 plll and AMD 1GHz chip ... Is the Intel chip available else where? I would like to have the option of future upgradeability. If you really have a hard-on for a fast processor that will be upgradeable, then you might want to wait another month or three... As Intel is supposed to be offering their Pentum 4 1Gig+ processors, and AMD is also to announce some new/improved chips too... Also, I'd stay away from "generic" RAM... I've had several friends who have purchaced "generic" RAM from Pricewatch.com and have been burned! And... If your gonna spend $100 for a 10 gig drive, you might as well, spend a little more and go with a 20-40 gig instead! Hell for an extra $100 you could tripple or even quadruple your dive space! Also, go for a 7200 speed drive too! You may also want to compare http://www.alienware.com or www.falcon-nw.com for comparison pricing on a similar equipped system. I just purchaced a system from Falcon NW 933 Mhz PIII with an Asus P34VX motherboard, a Maxtor DiamondMAX 40 gig drive, 128meg PC 133 SDRAM, SoundBlaster Live X-Gamer, Ge-Force 2 GTS 64 Meg Hercules AGP video card, plus numerious other goodies. It rocks! You should see how they wired everthing inside the case! Excellent cooling, very professional job, and they loaded and tested everything out, including one of my racing games.... But.... It took two weeks longer to deliver than they originally told me, and the keyboard they shipped had a broken foot, and appeared like it may have been either used, or the person who worked with it to set up my system had awfully dirty hands! They are replacing the keyboard and paying the shipping costs to/from, but it's out of stock for a week or so (ya right, I can buy the same thing from CompUSA or BestBuy today!) but hey... It's being shipped to me for free so I can't really bitch too much... Still I would do it all over again without a doubt just to save the hassles of building and configuring, and troubleshooting my own system. If you want email me at [email hidden] (remove the nospam part) and I can fill you in on more details about my expreinces with Falcon NW. Cheers! I think the rule of thumb for pricewatch.com is not to buy from those who are at rock bottom prices. I think you'd have to be an absolute FOOL to buy an intel P3 933 for $849 when you can get a AMD Thunderbird 1GHz for $479. http://www.tcwo.com On 15 Aug 2000 21:57:58 GMT, [email hidden] (KGH) wrote:

Your best value is always the second or third fastest chip available. This week you can get the PIII-800EB/133 for $279. Much better bang for your buck. Check weekly processor prices at http://www.sharkeyextreme.com/hardware/weekly_cpu/ > > Maxtor DiamondMax 10.2GB Ultra ATA/66 :91024U3 99.00 Too small!! You'll fill that baby up in no time. Get at least a 30GB. > > Generic PC133Mhz SDRAM 168-Pin 128MB 7,8ns Memory 169.00 Be careful with generic memory. It often isn't compatible. Go with Corsair or Mushkin in most instances. As far as I know, PC133 won't work with the P3C-2000 board. I could be wrong, but I read at least one review saying the board supports PC100 SDRAM. If you switch to the Asus CUSL2 motherboard, PC133 SDRAM will work. > Asus P3C2000 Slot 1 350-733MHz Motherboard:P3C2000 169.00 You're better off with the Asus CUSL2 motherboard. The P3C-2000 uses the Intel 820 chipset, which was designed to work with RDRAM. Intel patched the chipset with a Memory Translator Hub to enable the use of PC100 SDRAM, but not that efficiently. Get the Asus CUSL2 motherboard instead. It uses the 815 chipset, and PC133 SDRAM. When I bought a 13GB, I thought I'd *never* fill that thing up. Well, it's now my SECOND drive in the system - the primary is a 27GB...<g> Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett GPL hcp. +51.31 Never argue with an idiot. Actually one of the 15's is new, because I had to replace an 8GB that had a head crash the other day. One 15GB dedicated to Linux, 10 of the 15GB on the other dedicated to FreeBSD, and the 13GB for Windoze along with the remaining 5GB from the BSD drive. I have a 13 gig with 2 gigs free. It would be full but I usually uninstall something to install something else so that it doesnt fill right up. Time for a larger one here. :) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Skotty Flynn "skotty20" Nascar-Racing-Sims.Com: http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com The Ultimate Sim Racing Directory: http://www.nascar-racing-sims.com/directory/

Maxtor just released the largest ever hard drive at 80 gigs. These really large hard drives would sure take some time to defrag if they were full. :) On Thu, 17 Aug 2000 21:00:05 -0400, "Scott B. Husted" <[email hidden]> wrote: >I just installed a 45gig IBM ATA-100 drive in my new system <VBG>
