Are you running the 1.2 patch for GPL? I believe the earlier patch DID
induce some GP2-like slo-mo problems.

Before you buy.
Sadly, I tried that several times...

has happened. I finally managed to get GPL running well in D3D on my
notebook computer about a month ago. Since then, smoooooth 36fps sailing
(somehow sailing is an appropriate term for GPL). Even on the grid things
moved relatively smartly off the line.
I installed GP3 last weekend and had lots of fun. I came back to GPL and...
horror of horrors... it didn't work anymore. I could exit the pits at
36fps, but somehow on the first straight, Einstein's ghost would show his
face and time would slow down to about 1/5 of its normal pace. But here's
the weird thing. The framerate counter still showed 36fps, and turning the
wheel produced smooth animation. The scenery was all moving smoothly on my
monitor, just at the speed of molasses on a cold morning. Occasionally, if
I hit a guardrail, the game would jump back to real time while it was making
the crashing noises, but as soon as I freed myself from my dilemna, it was
back to slow motion. (Aside... it is quite nice to watch the suspension
move around in slow motion). So here's my theory. Geoff Crammond is
insanely jealous of GPL and put a little virus in GP3, such that his
advanced physics and rendering engine is copied over GPL's constant-time
engine. I can't think of any other explanation :-)
Even after a system wipe and all sorts of different core.ini settings, the
problem persists. My "solution" at the moment is to always run Fraps in the
background. It sounds strange, but I get consistent frame rates and
real-time action again in GPL, but only with Fraps running. If I turn off
Fraps, it goes back to slow-mo. I lose about 2fps to Fraps, but it's better
than nothing.
Bizarre. Any idea from anyone? Papyrus? D3D experts? The notebook is a
PIII-500 with a mobile version of the Savage 4. Nothing special, but like I
said, it worked before. Approximately how much texture memory does GPL need
in D3D?

Try reinstalling GPL. It works for some mysterious timing bugs on my
Win2K configuration. I even didn't reinstall to the same location (so
no need to repatch etc). Just the reinstall fixed things.

7 is 7a. There is no 7a anymore. Microsoft just appended "a" on a
temporary basis until all the bad copies of 7 were removed from the
net. If you go download it direct from Microsoft it just reads 7.
I would think the version with GP3 is the same as 7a and not the
original 7.

Yes, I'm sure your right, Geoff fooled us all by making us pay 30 for his
GPL virus....

My "solution" at the moment is to always run Fraps inVersion 1.2 plus D3D crashes on my notebook. The only way I can run GPL is
with version 1.0. Like I said, it worked before, but not now. Weird.

I came to the conclusion that FRAPS makes GP3 run very slowly,
so I stopped using it - I couldn't see the frame rate anyway.
It works OK with F1 2000 though..
