Hah! I did that with exactly the same problem.
BUT .. on the CD, in a dir called patches there is the 1.2 update for
**this** version of the game, remembering that it is not the true
original release.
Anyway, run that and the "Insert CD" message doesn't come up. However it
is far more convenient with the NO CD check isn't it?

I took the plunge and bought GPL at last. I've been aiming to do do
that for quite some time, but older games like that are hard to find
here in Sweden. Finally I spotted it online at reduced price, like 15
bucks. Got it yesterday. There was some kind of "budget title" box,
hmm, kind of a drag as I've read that the book that came with it was
an excellent read. It's still on the CD in .pdf format, but who reads
a 100 page book on-screen? :(
I immediately installed it and dl:d the 1.2 and D3D patch. The game
fired up right away and I could select up to 1600x1200 with my GF DDR.
Sweet. But then the damn game wouldn't go into training mode!! "Please
restart game and insert Game CD" - GRRR! Wtf, it installed from the
very CD that's still in. Has anyone else encountered this?
Well, off to GCW and got the 1.2 no-cd patch. All is well. Pheew. :)
I was surprised to see that the graphics weren't that bad for a two
year old game... Could be that I started out with 1152x864, though. I
can imagine that 800x600 or below can be quite "shimmery".
As suggested in the manual I started with the "F3"(I suppose) cars.
Damn, these cars are loose in the chassi! It feels like it's made of
rubber compared to the modern F1 cars in F12k... The slipping-sliding
took a while to get used to, as well as that there were like a
steering delay on turn-in. Got bored after a few laps and jumped in
the F1 Lotus. Man is that car twitchy. :) But wth, I'm always up for
a challenge. :)
I ended up with a 5 straight hour session on watkins glen and monza...
Just one more lap... damn, 3am already?! :D
BUT, finally to the gist of the story... I can't quite get the setups
to where I want it to be. I sat 4 hours today fiddling with various
stuff but I can't quite get the understeer to go away. I thought
especially the monza default setup to be extremely pushy.
So, has anybody some recommendations on good nice Lotus setups? I
tested one that I dl:d from Black Hole by some guy doing 1.03's on
watkins, but I found it undriveable. The thing I want the most is a
bit of oversteer or better balance. Just something to work from.
My laptimes from about 10h of driving:
Monza: 1.29.49
Watkins: 1.07.08
Spa: 3.29.76
Spa, btw, what a track!! Simply breathtaking. And horrifying.

And they get better! Download updated track and car graphics (as
well as new tracks) from GPLEA:
http://www.gplea.org
Dowload hi-res car dashes (a D3D must IMHO) from GPLSF:
http://129.100.29.86/gpl/
Even more free goodies can be had at The U.S. Pits:
http://www.theuspits.com
They happen to be down at the moment though.
As for your original question, setups can be had from a variety
or sources, most usually start at:
http://www.simracing.com/~alison/gpl/
Oh, and don't give up on the little cars (F3) fun is to be had
there if you just try to be a little patient. Good F3 & F2 setups
can be had from:
http://www.bus.nait.ab.ca/staff/mikeh/gpl/
Lastly when you are ready to go online, point your browser
at:
http://vroc.net
Best yet, the above is just the tip of the GPL iceberg, say
goodbye to your friends and family.

Hi Magnus, and Congratulations for finding GPL!
Yep, the default setups, especially for the Lotus, understeer a LOT. You can
download my setups from Schubi's site -http://www.parc-ferme.de/fastlaps.htm
(click on "Setups" in the menu at the top) - and say your Good Byes to
understeer! :)
If you havn't already, don't miss the home of Swedish GPL:ers -
http://sverige.gplonline.com/
And please have a look at my team to - Comet Motorsports -
http://drive.to/comet
Btw: Your times are similar to what I remember having after the same amount
of practice, so keep it up! :-D
Ciao!

Hmm, I see what you mean. :)
Way, WAY too much for my liking... I only got out of the WG esses one
out of every two times. ;-)
I had too soften it up somewhat, and actually improved(1.06.24).
Thanks Roland!

Excellent stuff. Thanks a lot.
Shit, I think that I am being sucked into this big-time. Another 4h
session today... :)

<snap: the puirchase of GPL>.
That kind of times, after 10 hours of driving!! There goes the last bit of
self-confidence. I own GPL almost form the very day it was released and my
times are
Monza: 1:29.60
Watkins: 1:07.25
Spa 3:24.92
I always tought that those hotlappers spend way more time than me driving,
but appearently ther are natural talents that can beat me after just 10
hours of driving.

What you could try however, is take my setups and soften the rear anti-roll
bar enough to make you feel comfortable with the way the car handles in the
corners (3-5 clicks maybe), and move the brake-bias forward enough to make
you feel confident under braking (1-3 clicks). And if the car is "wandering"
on the straight, feeling slightly unstable, you could get rid of the toe-out
in the front. By then it should be drivable at least. :)
