And your friend's opinion of NFS3 would have probably been even more
favorable, given that he's a novice. This may speak well for the
accessibility of GP3, but it does not necessarily indicate that it is
in any way "better" than F1 2000 in this instance.

Which is better, F1 2000 or GP3?
Asked to choose, most respondents preferred GP3 for its AI, racing experience and weather, though some liked F1 2000's online play and hotlapping. Simon Brown posted screenshot comparisons of Monaco showing F1 2000 looking too dark against a real photo, which prompted jokes and debate about gamma settings. Several said the question was really one of personal preference.
Automated summary.
That DOES seem to be the question that's being addressed here . . .

Controlling the car in F12K is almost impossible with the keyboard and when
many cars are around you graphics are tremendously hard to proces.
I own a K6-2 400 with viper550 and 192Mb memory. F12K is no option for this
machine, but is reasonable in GP3, which looks even better when not driving
at all.

machine just fine (64 MB RAM, 16 MB Voodoo Banshee card, heavily
tweaked overall), even in quick race mode with a full AI field (only
displaying 7 cars at a time, though). On the other hand, I CANNOT get
GP3 to run on my system with anything that looks better than VGA-level
graphics. And, once I get the frame rates in GP3 working halfway
decent, there are NO trackside graphics to speak of (which makes it all
the more realistic and immersive, right?), and there's no feel to the
physics at all using any of my WHEEL AND PEDAL setups (I was always
under the impression that keyboards were for typing with, but to GP3's
credit, it does support split-axis support when using the keyboard).
As for overall feel, I much prefer F12K for hotlapping because I really
like the feel of the cars, and I truly WISH that I could get GP3 to run
halfway decent so I could see just what it is that everybody likes so
much about it (other than the fact that they keyboard is usable as a
control device).
Given F12K's mediocre AI, I'm sure that GP3's playability probably does
edge out F12K, but I haven't been able to witness that for myself yet.

F1 2000 or Gp3?

Have a good one,
Chad Pierce
My preference is an F1 game that offers the best racing experience so GP3 is
for me. It has superior AI, very good physics that allows you to push to
the limit of control, unbelievable weather (dynamic to the point of rain on
one end of the track and dry on the other), good FF effects, solid if
unspectacular graphics (looks great on my V5 5500 with 2xFSAA) and very good
framerates. I run a full field and am super smooth even on turn one.
Specs: PIII @ 672, V5 5500 2xFSAA and 128 MB ram running at 1280x960.
F12K looks great without any other cars on the course but you'll need a Cray
to run it with full detail and a full field. Some like the physics better,
I don't since I find the F12K car floats a bit and feels sloppy to control
with its poor FF implementation. To me GP3 feels much tighter to control
with my LWFF. While GP3 is not what it could have been, it succeeds at what
it is: A solid upgrade from GP2 and the best modern F1 game. I'm in the
minority in this ng since I like GP3 far more than F12K. GP3 haters, flame
away my asbestos suit is ready and waiting ;-).

Well, I completely agree with you. GP3 gives a much better racing experience
than any other racing sim out there including GPL, allthough GPL is still my
favorite for hotlapping. But if you compare F1 2000 and GP3 I think GP3 is
much better!

Oh geez...if you are into racing sims then please do yourself a big
favour and get a wheel and pedals. You can't even judge the driving
model when you are using a keyboard. Personally, I don't think either
game is all that great, both have crappy AI IMO. The cars in GP3 are
too pointy (digital feeling) and the cars in F1 2000 are a bit loose
(just a tad). But, the physics model in F12K is the better of the two.
Graphics are so so in both games, but GP3 runs much better performance
wise than F12K. If you can't get a smooth frame rate in F12K then you
can't judge the game because you are not driving the game as intended.
Choose your poison because both games have their problems. But,
someone (not you) said GP3 is better than GPL. My advice is to get off
the crack as soon as possible. The only thing better is the weather
effects.

Wrong question !! The question should be like this:
"which do you prefere.. F1 2000 or GP3"
> I am not sure if that is good or not......add GPL in there and see what he
> thinks. He will absolutely HATE GPL because he will not be able to handle

Now you're talking !!! Absolutly true.
It depends on the fact what someone preferes in a game. Since i like the
online part, i race far more often F1 2000. But yup, both games have got
real good features, but thats said by many others a hundred times in this
newsgroup. Its not that i dont wanna choose, but it simply a fact that both
games are good. GPL also ofcourse (i am still practising the ice skating,
hehehehe, since i come from The Netherlands, i should improve quick on the
ice skating...... lol)
Btw its funny to see that in the beginning many people were very negativ
about GP3 (same happened with F1 2000) and now they are starting to like it.
Hehehehe......this is a normal human being behaviour, lol !!

That's true for the physics part. I showed him GPL. He drove/spun a couple
of hundred yards. He was impressed (with the game and with my driving
(GPL-handicap 175.55...)
But he really is able to assess the graphics. He has seen more games than
mnost of us and he knows pretty much about graphics engine. So if he says
that GP3 has done the job better than F12k regarding to graphics, I thend to
believe him.

It reminds me of Speedvision coverage during this year's Monaco GP - no,
it wasn't a modern-era car: at the beginning of the race (or qual.?)
they showed a qualifying lap with Ayrton Senna. Whoa! Did he know how
to wring everything out of a car! The footage was fantastic, all shaky
and LOUD! Nothing we have on the computer will ever compare to that!

GPL & GP3 are the two best sims out there at the moment.
IMHO of course....

Interesting link, but if the person who took the F1 2000 screen shot
had taken the time to adjust/tweak their gamma settings, the picture
would have looked MUCH more realistic. The bridge with the "Shell"
logo looks much more realistic in the F12K shot, for example, and while
the armco and road surface appear too dark, if the graphics had been
adjusted properly, they would have looked much better -- and, hence,
more realistic -- in the screen shot.
My opinion: Based on the side-by-side pictures, I'd have to say that
both GP3 and F12000 look BETTER than real-life! <G>

That photo's from Martin Brundle in the early 90s. Everyone knows that, due
to the accumulation of particulate matter in the atmosphere over Europe from
increasing sales of diesel VWs, Monaco is now much darker than it was ten
years ago. F1-2000 has perfectly captured this change, while Crammond is
still living in the past. :-)

Fair enough, I'll give it a try and see what I come up with. GP3 and F1
2000 were both using the same gamma settings though.
Oh, the real-life shot looks blurry because it's taken from a fairly low-res
video clip. I only wanted something to demonstrate how bright the real
sport looks when the tracks are in direct sunshine.

Oh man, will you guys never get it. Why does one of those two have to be
better? One is excellent at simulating 67 F1 cars and sucks at
simulating
modern F1 cars. So if you hate one period of racing, choose the other
one.
I like both, so I have only one problem: sharing the time between them.

Which brings me to a question about the graphics quality of GPL (wow, how's
that for a non-sequitar?). Lots of people have talked about how poor the
GP3 graphics were, and how much they preferred GPL even. Well, I will admit
that GPL has a certain atmosphere, but when I drive around Monaco, the first
thing that hits my mind (well, the second, actually... the first is the
haybales at the chicane as I fly through upside down) is "Where are all the
buildings?". GPL must have one of the most sparse Monacos I have ever seen.
Granted, there has been some development since 1967, but if I watch "Grand
Prix" or some other period films with Monaco, there seems to still be a fair
number of buildings. Did Papyrus perhaps selectively thin out the buildings
to boost framerate?

Not to mention that during the Senna Q-lap you mention, he set his fast lap
while working through some traffic. Now *that* is a true indication of the
man's genius. That little bit of video really took my breath away at the
time.

Interesting. Though tough to compare. Since the real one isnt good enough
and not exactly a cockpitview (so other perspective). Anyway still
interesting. Colors of GP3 are better, but i think the position of the car
in F1 2000 is different (more far away from the bridge) than the real photo.
So diff to compare. My experience in F12K is also that some tracks are
pretty realistic (also with laptimes, for example Austria..) but others are
really not, for example Hungary. Thats a pity.
I only wonder what the real F1 photo stands for. Which season ? Which car
exactly. I dont think this is a 2000 season car (maybe i am wrong?)
I didn't post that picture to compare track accuracy or graphics quality, it
was more to point out how on my PC the colour scheme in F1 2000 doesn't look
right. The video is actually Martin Brundle driving round Monaco from 1989
and can be downloaded here http://members.home.net/f1gallery/movies.html in
the complete laps section. :)

And you think the track looks the same after 11 years?

The exhausts from all the Rollses and Ferraris will take a toll on the
colour scheme, though, I agree. ;)

I've seen Monaco on tv every
year for the last 15 years and it hasn't changed much in appearance.
Certainly the track surface hasn't changed colour noticeably. It's only
used for racing a few days per year, the rest of the year they are normal
public roads.
What's that saying....a picture says a million words? Take a look at
http://www.f1today.com/1999season/round-4/pictures.asp which shows a whole
sequence of photos from last years monaco race. The track surface is very
clearly light grey. See how bright F1 looks when it's sunny? I think you'd
have to admit the F1 2000 colour scheme for Monaco doesn't quite match up to
these photos.
