Fortunately this is not an EA Sports game.

NASCAR Heat full-field frame rates and content
Sal V. worried about how NASCAR Heat would perform with a full 43-car field, since the demo was limited. Others posted frame rates and settings to recover performance, and explained that licensing left the game with 27 real drivers and without Indianapolis and Pocono. Arguments about V-sync and NASCAR Racing 3 frame rates followed.
Automated summary.
Is anyone else concerned about what kind of frame rate hit NH is gonna take
when there is a full field of cars out there? 43 cars at Martinsville or at
Indy will sure change things. I hope not.
Why doesn't the demo have a full field of cars? The extra cars would not
have made the file size much bigger, they could have been just a solid color
without fancy paint jobs. I wonder why only 16 cars???
I don't mean to sound so negative but remember F1-2000 from EA Sports? Take
a few laps out there by yourself and it's very fast, add all of the other AI
cars and it all goes to hell. Can anyone who tested the game comment on this?

It is demo and demo means not all features from full game are included. They
don't want to give you all features. You will have everything when you will
buy full game. It would be nonsense to give you demo with full grid,
options, and opportunity to add tracks . Noone would buy full version :)

Go back and dload the N2 and ICR2 demo's....how many cars are available
there???
You are right to be concerned about frame rates, but it is very common NOT
to give away the store with demo's....

Machine spec... PIII-550, 128MB RAM, Voodoo3 3000, no overclocking
No higher than 800X600 resolution with the Voodoo3
all options maxed, hi-detail cars... Frame rate test = low 30s
hi-detail cars not checked... Frame rate test = low 40s
lower draw distance one click... Frame rate test = low 50s
16 car field, options maxed, hi-detail... no noticeable slowdown
24 car field, options maxed, hi-detail... minor slowdown at start and out of T4
(from pit road graphics)
43 car field, options maxed, hi-detail... becomes choppy and harder to drive,
remove hi-detail cars with 43 car field and things become much smoother.
I've found I prefer a 24-car field using "Pro" AI at this point as I have a
much better chance of finishing in the top-20 each race... ;-)
As soon as the P4 comes out I'm getting a top-end PIII. If that doesn't allow
smooth framerates with everything maxed and full field I'll upgrade the video
card. Hmmm... maybe I should try overclocking both first... :-)
Conclusion... I was impressed with the results. Given the 6DOF physics model
and improved graphic details over N3, these results are quite impressive given
some of the newer entrants into the sim arena. MGI/Hasbro did an excellent job
optimizing HEAT for maximum performance! And of course the physics model, FF,
AI, and gameplay features make HEAT an instant success... IMHO.

(or any other number). I mean that if you're more than 24 cars behind, who
cares whether you can see those in the front. It's not like that they will

curious...Personally, I prefer reducing the number of cars in front rather

race? I'm talking about the actual number of cars starting the race. Yes, I
know that most of the time you can't see all 43 or how ever many cars are
running at the same time. As long as they are out there running and at a
good frame rate. I wouldn't want to race the Daytona-500 with only 16 or 24
cars just because the frame rate sucks using 43. Not very realistic either.

Then I guess we have yet to see a new sim (meaning new graphics and physics
engines) be a success in your book? I can't think of any new sims that, at the
time of release, I could run at full song with a 1+ year old machine. The fact
is that game developers design games to look and play best with the current
best hardware, and in most cases current technology isn't always enough to run
at full song. This makes sense to some degree because the game will have
longer staying power. HEAT comes the closest to being able to play at full
song of any new sim I've ever purchased at release date or soon thereafter. In
case you were thinking about them, you can't really count sims like N99/N3 as
they weren't major upgrades from N2, IMHO.
I am confident in saying that a PIII-800 (or equivalent CPU) with a GeForce II
or Voodoo5 5500 should run HEAT at full song with no problems. It is rare for
a game manufacturer to release a game that will run at full song, and no slow
down, with even current technology.
Given the above, and the fact that this IS a ground-breaking NASCAR sim... I'm
impressed!

You CAN run a full field with great frame rates. Just turn off high-detail
cars (won't make a great visible difference), and lower the draw distance down
one notch. I gained a full 20fps making these two changes on my system. Your
mileage may vary. :-)

I just wish they had included an extra track and the ability to race as
many laps as we wanted, just like in Dirt Track Racing. Still, NH is the
most impressive sim I've seen for quite some time.
Bendito;
DOH! Is this for real? Have to be honest, I haven't paid much
attention to this prior to the demo release. Good God, let's hope the
West bros. can deliver on WSC or its curtains on my sim-racing
career. ::)

If you guys want to cry about that sort of missing realism you should
complain to NASCAR its affiliations, not MGI. Im sure MGI would have been
overjoyed to box every name with their game. The only critisism you can have
toward a developer is how easily (or not) they make their game to modify.

coming from. Why not release the demo with a full field? Let us try the real
deal. I'm running the demo at 1280x1024, all graphics maxed and got a 52.2
fps after the benchmark, what would I get with 43 total cars??? Beats me, go
buy the full release and find out, right? This is what my original post was
about. OK what if I get 20 fps after benchmark? Oh, Ok, cut down the field,
run the Daytona-500 with 16 cars. Cut down on the resolution, cut down the
graphic details and upgrade my computer. Nascar Heat wouldn't be so great
after all of that, would it? This is all speculation anyway. Again, that's
why I made the post in hope that someone who tested the game could enlighten
me.

Not really that pretty considering the claim of 32-bit graphics. Hardly a
hardcore driving model chewing up valuable cpu cycles. NH is smoother for
me and looks a hell of a lot better.
> Toca-II (not sure about the engine but I think it's new) same as above
Not a real sim either, and ugly graphics to boot.
> SCGT -EA 1024x768 all options maxed
Almost no cpu cycles dedicated to AI since they are dumb asses that just run
the perfect line all day and have no idea you are also on the track. Very
choppy around turns and severe draw-in in the distance. This engine is a
graphics dog (as is the F12K which uses this code) and MGI blows it away
with NH. Also, with only 16 cars on the track this is not exactly a full
fieild for racing.
> Viper Racing -Sierra
8 other cars is nowhere near a full field so not a fair comparison. Not the
best AI (sadly). They seem to not know you are actually on the same track
and run into you quite often without explanation. This game was real close
to being great if it had real race tracks and better AI.
I think NH has great physics, great graphics AND great AI. This makes it
unique in my opinion since its gorgeous, realistic and smart. A rare combo
that runs fast as hell on my system.

Errrrm... N3 certainly *did* have Indy! That was one of the reasons I
got it.

ONLY 27 drivers You'll probably see a bunch of unknown names like old
friends of MGI and perhaps even the legendary RacerX. As far as tracks
go,
Does even N3 have ALL the Winston Cup tracks?

Its called "licensing" to get the rights to use all the sponsors,

A demonstration is a short snippit of the real thing to intice you into
purchasing it. It worked for me and i would have accepted a demo with only
one track and no AI to race against......oh wait.....didn't GPL do that

Who in the hell runs N3 with all the cars visible? I just do 8 or 10
in front and 4 in the rear and the framerate is great. So IMHO
N3 is not a valid example. F1 2000 is the same, I don't display
the full field either. But the full field is there. I get 25 fps in
practice and 15-20 in races.

a 3Dfx card(s) in glide has always looked better though.

That's exactly what I did Sal... I tested the game and gave you the numbers I
got with my system, plus even made suggestions on what I consider to be 2 minor
changes to get an extra 20 fps in order to race a full 43 car field smoothly!
<please read my original reply to you again>
If you're getting 52.2 fps on the benchmark, you should have no problems with a
full field in the release at the same graphic settings. I actually got worse
benchmark results in the demo than I did with the beta I tested, but that's
because my suggestion to make a more realistic benchmark was taken into account
(or they already had plans to make the benchmark more realistic). The original
benchmark in the Beta was Earnhardt coming out of the pits going nuts doing
donuts and stuff. No other cars running on the track, just the other AI cars
sitting in the pits watching Earnhardt do his stuff. Amusing, but not a
realistic benchmark. I'm glad they changed the benchmark to on-track racing
with many cars in front coming out of T4.
Hope I've been of some help to you, and at least eased your concerns regarding
frame rates with a full field.

Same here, I can run full fields all cars in view and not lose framerate at
any track....been doing it since N3 came out. <shrug>
P3-700, V3 3000, 256mb
Please don't make me repeat myself because I hate to do that! In a word,
YES! Try turning off the VSYNC and I'm sure you'll get there! Oh by the way
I also had the same results when I once had a Voodoo-3 3500 in the PIII650.
It's all about tweek'n brutha.

I never get a slowdown Ed. P3 800, V5 5500, 256mb ram. Get a faster

Sorry Ed. I don't run all cars visible. 12 in front, 4 behind.

Are you talking about NH or N4 not having a feature allowing you to turn off
cars (i.e., run with less than a full field)? If you are talking about N4,
where the hell did you get the demo! ;-).

You can run full 43 car fields in Heat, but you are correct in that not all the
drivers are real WC drivers... licensing issues.
Heat is not missing a bunch of tracks. Only tracks missing are IMS and
Pocono... again licensing issues.
Considering this is MGI/Hasbro's first venture into NASCAR simulations, they
did a pretty good job on the licensing side. It could have been worse, like
say 15 drivers and half the tracks? Anyone remember an expansion pack for
Nascar Racing that came out months after the original release? How many Nascar
games can you name that have included all but 2 tracks on the WC schedule, and
also included Daytona on the original released CD? :-)

I would guess that the cost of licensing Daytona and Indy are quite
expensive, and more than likely there were only funds to license one
of the tracks in the production budget. As for Pocono, they are just
plain greedy idiots.
He's talking about NH and the # of cars visible ahead of you. NH will allow
you to choose from a few different sized fields (like 16, 24 or 43 cars...
can't remember any other choices off the top of my head), but will not let you
choose how many cars are visible in front or behind you. Basically, what you
choose for the field size is what you get on the track in your view.

I don't care if you designed the first space shuttle buddy. All your talk is
just that "talk". I have no reason to lie about something to do with video
games Jack. What I see is what I see, like it or not. I bet you tried
turning off the Vsync anyway and it worked. Vsync even makes a difference
right now as I type this. I just turned it off, started a race at the back
of the pack at Martinsville, and as soon as we made our way into the first
corner, under yellow mind you, the fps dropped to 26-25. Now I turn off
Vsync, go back and do the same thing and the FPS never, I REPEAT NEVER drops
below 30. The same thing happened with my PIII650 & V2 SLI when I had it. It
must be real hard for you to grasp this what with all of your BS experience
that means absolutely nothing. But whatever, I'm get'n real tired of wasting
my time trying to educate you on how to config & tweak a gaming PC. Where
you responsible for OS2 and DR. DOS? Wow you must be real proud.

No offense 'rrevved' but VSYNC does have an effect, albeit a small one, on
frame rates in N3. I've tested it both ways extensively. I have a similar
system to Sal and I can confirm that it is possible to have framerates that
never drop below 30 even with a full field of 43, all cars being drawn,
1024x768, etc etc. I respect you for your background and education sir, but
I'm afraid you might be wrong on this issue. I will respect you much more
if you admit you might be wrong on this point, then if you try to argue that
Sal is lying when I have seen proof on my very own system that he is
correct.
