Re: Animated pitstops; I'm a believer now

NASCAR Heat's animated pit crews versus GP3's floating hand

Stephen Ferguson said NASCAR Heat's 3D animated pit crew had won him over on eye candy. Others contrasted it with GP3's sprite-based pit lane and pixelated visor-cleaning hand, and debated how hard modelling F1 crews would be. Late posts covered demo crashes linked to editing the hardcore setting.

Eye-candy, schmeye-candy I used to say. But then again, I only recently moved out of the stone ages and into the 3D-accelerated world. I imagined that little polygon pit crews running around would be silly, and would use up valuable development resources that could go into better things. But then I watched those little Nascar Heat men run around my car, a big grin went across my face, and I was convinced that it added to the racing experience and really put me into the car. The sad thing is that Sega's Virtual Racer did it years ago, the GP3 sprite takes me back to my 8-bit gaming days. The whole pit section of GP3 is very poorly implemented :-( Andrew.

I'm happy that NH put together a great physics and track package before putting in extras like an animated pit crew. Seeing the pit crew helps to put you in the race even more :-) Hopefully, NH has an option.cfg entry for the number of pit-crews seen. Those people with super computers could turn on 3 pit-crews without that much fps loss im sure. Now, if I could only run the demo more than 3 laps without it crashing :-( Jason. I think it's dead simple. We animate the results of our biomechanical testing of spines based on CT scans of the patient and motion data captured with a series of infrared markers. The patient comes in in the morning, and by the end of the morning I have the full spine up on my workstation, moving in real time. Its a load of polys (up to 25 vertebral bodies x lots of polys per vertebra). I think it would be a piece of cake. Especially as a lot of the F1 pit guys just sit around looking really serious. :-) Stephen Jan Loebzien <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Fri, 18 Aug 2000 17:29:29 GMT, "ymenard" <[email hidden]> > wrote: > > >That stupid BAD PIXELATED arm that washes your helmet in GP2.5 ispathetic.

I also liked the little slip with my teammate pitting at the other end of the pit row. I exited my pit, trundled down the pit lane on the rev limiter, and waved to him as I went out for my hotlap. I have no sound problems with my SBLive (liveware 3.0 and May 5, 2000 drivers). It just crashes to the desktop with a "Oppsy, a log file was generated" error. MGI support asked me to reinstall the demo and that fixed it. Turned out to be me changing the options.cfg to set hardcore to yes. Jason. Peter Ives wrote:

Hey, me too. Never had this problem on any other game since I got my V3 2000, but with NH the screen locks up whilst the sound continues (reminds me of my old V2 days). Is this what you're experiencing? BTW not every 3 laps but it's eventually locked up everytime I've played it. Generally the more that's happening then the more likelyhood of a lockup. I've had to drop to 640x480 to make things easier. At 800x600 it was certainly happening more frequently. No, haven't messed with those settings at all yet, so it definitely isn't that. I've only had the game 2 days - still playing catchup after me hols - so haven't had time to really get into depth with the demo yet. I do like it though, despite the lockup probs. Even in 'Expert' Mode you have to think about what you are doing whilst driving to avoid things getting hairy (especially under braking). Also like the little added features, like the AI cars when you bump fenders with them also doing the same back when given the opportunity. All-in-all, this looks like a winner. Definitely more going for it than against it.
