Hi all, So, I'm pretty much lots now as to which is the best 3D card out there. Since it looks like game developers aren't going to look too kindly upon my Banshee from here on in... What's the catch of the day as far as 3 cards go? I've fallen behind on my knowledge of what 3d cards are out there as of late.

Oh boy, here we go again on the 3d card debate. Well they seem to come out with new cards every few month, but the prices are not getting cheaper on the new cards ($300 to $400 retail US right now). So you can pay the big bucks for the latest thing or save a bit with the previous model card when the new one comes out. The top cards right now are the Voodoo 5 5500 for $300, Nvida GeForce 2 32MB for $290, or GeForce 2 64MB for $400 (these prices are from an EB store). The two GeForce cards are about the same, but with the 64MB version it cost a lot more for memory thats not needed for most games right now. There is also the ATI Radeon , but I have not seen anything to show that its any better yet. I think you will find that for this NG it is a split decision between the V5 and GF2. GF2 is D3D and OpenGL card. It is by far the best choice for Q3 gamers with high fps. It runs D3D very well and high fps also. Image is very good. V5 runs D3D, OpenGL and Glide, so for Glide games like UT and other race sims that use Glide it is the preferred card( It does not seem that any future games support Glide though). V5 has FSAA through hardware that works with all games and smoothes out the "jaggies" and makes the picture look a lot better (another debate) but at the cost of some fps. You may not care about FSAA for Q3 or UT but for sims it may be your choice if image quality is worth the fps hit. I think it all depends on what you prefer, fastest fps for D3D and OpenGL with GF2 , or Glide support and FSAA with V5. Lutrell 9Wright7 wrote in message <8nmcge$9i6$[email hidden]>...
