What are your system specs? I have a K6-2 400 with 64 MB of RAM and a
16 MB Voodoo Banshee card, and I get 18 - 20 fps with no problems. I
also just found a nice little performance-booster called "Cacheman,"
which optimizes memory and disk cache. Memory managers have never done
squat for performance for me in the past, but this one is truly GREAT.
I gained 2 - 4 fps in NASCAR Heat just by running Cacheman. The real
kicker for me is that before I ran Cacheman, NASCAR Heat was showing my
video card to be a "bottleneck" (the CPU was listed as "good"), but
after installing Cacheman and using it to optimizing my system, it
upgraded my video card rating to "fair," which seems like a substantial
improvement (my polygon throughput rating in NASCAR Heat's benchmark
test improved significantly thank to Cacheman).
You can find Cacheman here:

If you can't get it to run in the first place, this won't help much, I
don't think, but once you get it running, it does help a lot.

Before you buy.
Glad to help, Mike -- post your system specs (RAM, video card, CPU
speed, etc.), and we might be able to offer more advice.

The demo runs fine for me on a AMD K6-2 450. Running at 800X600 on my
Voodoo2 or 1024X768 on my TNT2 I have experienced no lockups.

Just caught this thread (been on holiday you see) and I too am having
difficulties with my k6-2 450. If I try to run in 800x600 then I cannot
finish a race at Richmond before I get screen lockup but sound keeps
going. If I drop it down to 640x480 then I can at least get a race in,
generally, but not always. It seems to be work related, in that the
more work my comp has to do then the more likely it is to happen, though
not always because it has crashed on a menu screen after a race also.
No probs with my only other 3d game I play though, GPL. Used to get
similar probs when I had a V2, but since upgrading to a V3 2000 things
have been fine.
I too have cacheman, though my system my already be optimised with it,
as I haven't noticed any improvement. Cannot understand where they get
my 3d card as the bottleneck though. Surely the AMD chip, with its poor
floating point etc, would be that. I think that the game just takes the
proc speed as the basis for its rating, without it really knowing the
type of processor, ie P2 P3 celeron or AMD etc. I've now tried
overclocking my 3d card - up to 135Mhz at the mo - to see if the
bottleneck ranking will change, but it's still saying it. Oh well. BTW
was getting lockups when card was at its standard 120Mhz setting, before
any overclocking attempts.
System Spec:
AMD K6-2 450
128Meg Ram@100mhz
Voodoo 3 2000 PCI graphics
ISA AWE 64 sound card
DirectX 7a
Haven't yet read your problem on nascar message board. Will check
later.
