GPL vs GP3

Tonight for the first time since buying Gp3 I played gpl.( by the way I only brought it on Saturday) a number of things occurred to me. firstly gp3 is a good game, however GPL is a great game! these things occurred to me. 1) drivers today have it so easy. I actually found it hard the first couple of laps, I got use to driving with aero. 2) The modern day track are terrible, the fearsome lesmos have been reduced to almost flat-out turns, and monza well.... 3)GP3 is no where near as fun as GPL. it seems quite sterile. 4) I would pay 50 for gpl 1.3. this is gpl, patched with weather added and slightly tweaked ai. im sure everyone here would. so papy how about it? it isn't developing a whole new game, just an addition. oh could they add the act labs shifter support to? 5) looks like im going to have to wait for WSC. -- Kieran www.pcracing.co.uk for GP3 and WSC

I'd second that. I certainly pay at least 50 for an up-rated GPL. GPL is just amazing value at only 9.99 these days. I paid 16 for mine 18 months ago and I've played it practically more than anything else I've ever bought, talk about value for money! I paid 20.99 for GP3 and it certainly won't last as long on my hard drive as GPL. In fact since getting GP3 I've still played GPL more. The worst thing about GP3 is that it is making me take a little time away from GPL so my rank is slipping (arrrrhhh) Some Call Me Tim

Weather? Isn't it easier to simply drive the car into the fence every once in awhile to simulate rain? I have a hard enough time keeping the car on the track as it is.

It is common belief that GP3 has so much of a different feel than GPL due to the aero package of a modern F1 car. While this is true at higher speeds, in slow speed corners it is not the aerodynamics that causes the difference in handling. The difference is mostly in tires. The bias-ply tires of the GPL era reach their peak grip at rather large slip angles/ratios. This means that in order to initiate a turn, you must first rotate the car to present enough sideways attitude for the tires to reach their maximum grip. With a well setup car in a mid speed turn, the yaw angle of the car is usually lower than the steering angles of the fronts. The modern radial tires have a much lower operating slip angle range. This is why the car attitude does not deviate much from the direction it is travelling in, and some people describe the feel as being 'on rails'. This means that the steering demand on the front tires is in most typical corners usually higher than the yaw angle, and this is where the difference of the feel mainly comes from in my opinion. It's not the aero that makes it easy (actually it makes it hard since everything happens that much quicker due to it), but the nature of the tires which enables the driver to point the car where he or she wants to almost all the way to the limit, and this is probably where you get the sterile feel from. However, once you are completely at the limit, the behaviour of the car in GP3 or GPL is not all that different (throttle steering applies in both cases, for example), only in GP3 everything is happening much, much faster, again due to the unforgiving nature of the radial tires, leading some people to believe spins are 'canned'. WSC tire model should be much closer to GP3 than to GPL. The cars will be heavier and more inert than modern F1, meaning that the on-the-limit control will be easier than in GP3 due to prolonged car settling times, yet they will be much more point-and-squirt than the ones in GPL (assuming it will be done as as realistically if possible, but I do not doubt that). For all that do so, do not expect the feel of GPL being replicated in WSC. -Gregor

What an intelligent post. So many posts whine on about how GPL is a "better" driving experience than GP3; ignoring that the basic physics of the cars are totally different. Personally I love chucking around the Porsches in NFSPU most of all; but all of them are great sims in different ways; and the weather in GP3 is worth the price ticket alone IMHO.
