Re: Upgrade in the pits (not the US): V5500 or GeForce2???

A TNT2/Geforce will always be slower than a V3 3000 unless you are running Quake3 and/or resolutions higher than 1024x768. I'd advise every V3 owner to stay with his card, it is still the best video card available (even if some hardware reviewers want to tell you it's outdated), and there is nothing to be gained, unless you have too much money, then go for the V5 and enjoy 4xFSAA ;-)

Not much point in upgrading the vid card as the V3 is still the fastest card that exists for the sims you mentioned. The V5 isn't faster, but image quality is improved thanks to FSAA.

The eternal question. Now that there is GP3, F1-2000 and still GPL, which is the better investment for an upgrade of a Cel 600, 128 mb system currently sporting a V-3000? Or should I wait on the new graphics card and add 128 mb ram? Or put it all into a new chip/motherboard combination? What's going to supercharge my system the most? Expert crew advice appreciated.
Graphics card will, you already have a good proc, and RAM is fine right now. Which video is a more difficult, if you have little money to spend, a TNT 2 would work well, but a GeForce or GeForce 2 would be even better. I currently am going to be getting a nVidia card (after being a long time 3dfx fan, had VooDoo 1,2, and got burned on the Voodoo 3) Respond on how much money you have to spend and I can give you a more educated guess. -Stuart Becktell "PeteAba" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > The eternal question. > > Now that there is GP3, F1-2000 and still GPL, which is the betterinvestment

Is your current 600MHz CPU a celeron1 (Katmai) already overclocked from a 450 or a celeron2 (coppermine) based cpu? If it's a celery2 then you can possibly overclock to 900MHz or higher with proper cooling and quality PC100 memory. in order...the best path for an upgrade: a: CPU b: Vid card c: Memory Now you "may" need to upgrade your motherboard when you get a new cpu so that could add to the expense. But it seems as if you have a "fairly" robust cpu now...next is the vid card. Memory above 128 won't show much of an improvement in gameplay. dave henrie "PeteAba" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > The eternal question. > > Now that there is GP3, F1-2000 and still GPL, which is the betterinvestment

If the card he has is a Voodoo 3/3000, the TNT 2 will be hell of a lot slower in GPL and the GeForce (1) will most likely also be be slower. For graphics, the original question is the correct one: V5 or GF2? My impression is that both are faster than the V3 in GPL, but not by large margins except maybe at really high resolutions (1600x1200+). I'm getting a V5 for the FSAA to replace my V3, will know how it works out in a few days... _ Mats Lofkvist [email hidden] GPLRank -0.14

yes urrm... I'm sorry, I apologize profusely, my brain appeared to omit the GPL part of the post until about 5 mins after pressing send. Doh!, I'd have to admit that GPL may be better at Glide over the D3D patch with a V3 as opposed to a TNT2, I was looking at it in terms of a general upgrade from V3 to TNT 2U/GF1. Even though Glide is faster than the D3D patch with the Voodoo's, the difference isn't that big. I tested GPL on a TNT2 / PIII 600 PC at work just a few days ago, and it was noticeably slower than my V3 / Athlon 700 at home even with the latter using the D3D drivers. My V3 is now replaced with a V5. Without the FSAA, I get almost exactly the same framerates with the V5 at 1280x1024 as I got with the V3 at 1024x768, and the same holds for 1600x1200 vs 1280x1024. Thats a decent improvement (obviously the V5 is can draw about 50% more pixels in the same time), but with the FSAA turned on it's even better: I agree completely with others who already have posted about 4xFSAA at 800x600 looking as good as or even better than 1600x1200 without FSAA. And, suprise, the V5 achieves almost exactly the same framerates at 800x600 with 4xFSAA as the V3 did at 1024x768. Counting 4x800x600 as 1600x1200 means 150% more pixels in the same time which is a really good improvement. Ok, if you are like me you probably want the raw data. Remaining stationary at the rear end of the grid with a full set of AI at a Monaco race, all graphics and sound options maxed out (max detail slider, full mirrors, all textures, etc, etc). 1 is the lowest FPS noted (the minimum when the AI start), 2 is when the last AI disappears behind the building at the first turn and 3 is the highest FPS noted before being kicked out of the race.
