Just out of interest, have you actually read the manual?
It states quite clearly why the hotlaps have different extensions.
hl stands for hot lap.
The last letter identifies the track.
So each track will have a different last letter, but will still have hl
at the start of the extension.
The same thing applies to all other filename extensions in GP3, the last
letter always identifies the track.
Like I said, its all in the manual, all you have to do is read it....

have you loaded in the GP3Video program for longer replay length. if so,
you wont be able to load hot laps done before you loaded the program.

I use the following menu structure
Main Menu - WorkShop - Review Performance - (Select Circuit eg Italy) - Load
and View Hotlap and there I get a list of all files in the GPSaves
Directory.
Heres the problem, no matter what file I select - The game returns the
message "Wrong File Type".
Some of these hotlaps are ones Ive saved myself during practice and during
qualifying. these have the extension .hln
Others I have downloaded and have the extensions .hla and .hld
No matter which ones I try i always get "Wrong file type" message.
Whats wrong?
Can anyone please help.

Im not sure u get my problem but anyway Ive done what you said.
Heres an example of one Ive done
File is called monza.hln
When I highlight it from the load game menu the bottom right corner provides
the following info
24/8/00 02:26 93763 bytes
Hotlap
Monza - Italy
When I click on OK I still get the message "Wrong file type". This happeens
for all hotlap files (.hle .hld .hln)
The ones I create are given the ext .hln
Heres another question - why are there different file extensions for
hotlaps??
Basically I cant load hotlaps - please help

That's quite simple, the first race has extension hla, the second hlb
and so on.
