Re: NASCAR Heat Full Version Mini-review

Mixed reactions to the full NASCAR Heat release

A dissatisfied buyer said he would return NASCAR Heat and wait for NASCAR Racing 4, criticising missing tobacco and alcohol sponsors and arcade feel. Ed Martin of Monster Games, who noted he had previously worked at Papyrus, replied that no licensed NASCAR title could carry those sponsors and suggested Expert or Hardcore modes. Many praised the game and Ed's presence; the 150-post thread later degenerated into arguments about anonymity and in-jokes.

Getting sideways at 100 mph in a real Winston Cup car will quite often put you out of the race for good, so does it really matter whether it's because you got airborne or . . . ? Also, what were you doing to get sideways at 100 mph? This isn't N3, with a two-dimensional physics model -- as you are now painfully aware, you CAN get airborne, so maybe it's your driving style that needs to be tweaked, not the physics model. People who played GP2 and ICR2 to death STILL had a huge learning curve to adapt to GPL, so maybe NASCAR Heat represents the same type of learning curve. N3 was pretty unrealistic because you COULDN'T get airborne, so maybe we ALL have a lot of re-learning to do in order to determine whether NASCAR Heat is accurate or not. -- JB Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

<<I'm gonna wait for NASCAR 4>> AND WAIT YOU SHALL! BENNY BOY! Jeez, I remember N4 was supposed to be out sometime LAST year! Why do all you Papy lovers let them slide on once again pushing back the release date by another 4-6 months??!Gimme a break... The word "lapdog" comes to mind...I just bought NH at Babbages for $39.95...I'm looking forward to running it later...But-I put N3 away about 12 months ago-BOOOORRRINNG! BTW-when did any developer display beer or tobacco cars properly?DUH!
They'll be EXACTLY the same in N4, They are simply not allowed to have Bud on the car, if they were allowed, they would. And of course, you meant NASCAR 4 in your last paragraph. :-) I agree, N4 will be better than this, that is my honest forseeing, but at the moment NH is da bomb. -- Tim, [email hidden]|[email hidden] http://legends.sports-gaming.com/forums.shtml FREE forums for your league... http://legends.sports-gaming.com Sim racing website loosely based on gpl... You know I have seen this happen in other sim forums where the developers will post good helpful information only to be blasted by posters. It's really sad because I hate seeing another simulation community die because of ignorant people but it looks like it's going to happen. So please just ry to ignore those post they don't represent the normal members of this community. Remember Ed most people who like your product probably won't post here about most people post to new groups only to complain or to get there Jerry Springer fix. -- Jeff Murchison JR "Ed Martin" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Yzep5.160$[email hidden]... > Gee, I was wondering what felt so strange. :-) > > All due respect, Scott, but just because a representative from a publisher > is up here & many people seem to appreciate that, I think your comment is a > little ignorant. If you think NASCAR Heat is "100% arcade," then you're not going to be any more impressed with GP3. If you're interested in an F1 title, save your money and pick up a copy of F1 2000 if you don't have it already. -- JB In article <Ugep5.55317$[email hidden]>, "Scott Gibson" <[email hidden]> wrote: > I picked it up today and would have to agree. Not a flame but a general comment: I've never gotten airborne as much as you guys say you have in the NASCAR Heat demo, and I don't think I've gotten upside-down more than once or twice. Could it be that I'm hitting the wall a little more realistically (or maybe just *less*) than you guys? -- JB In article <[email hidden]>, Ben <[email hidden]> wrote:

Picked up one of three copies shipped to EB near my home at 45 bucks plus tax. Have been messing with it for a while and here are my thoughts: I'm gonna wait for NASCAR 4. This things's prolly going back unless some smart codebuster can figure a way to get rid of the "Rusty" and "Dale Jr." cars and replace them with the Ford Miller Light and Budwieser Chevy. I know, I know, it's no big thing , but it bugs the heck out of me. Tracks look okay, races okay , nothing different from the demo. If you hit a wall, the same thing happens most of the time...the car flips on its side and slides a ways down the track, you know, like in real life. Also, as in the demo, if you get a little air under the car it suddenly inflates with helium and you fly around in the air a little while. Nascar 3 IMHO has got this thing beat to death. Eye candy is no substitute for realism, and I'm afraid there has been a little bit of mass hysteria over this title. That's it, flame away. Ben

THat Rusty and Dale Jr. wil probably be similar to what NASCAR 4 will have. They aren't all0wed to put the alcohol or tobacco sponsors on cars. N3 didn't have it, none of the current F1 games have it. All of them have been created separately though, so I wouldn't bother with that being a problem. I will agree that you still get air too easily (nothing will ever beat the EA NASCAR games in this area though IMO). -Pav Ben <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

1) You should try Expert or Hardcore mode. 2) If you're expecting anyone else's NASCAR title to ship with alcohol or tobacco marks, you're going to be disappointed with them, too. "Ben" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I picked it up today and would have to agree. It has very good physics, and the graphics are great.....but it's just not my cup of tea. I played on Expert for a bit, then changed it to hardcore and played for quite a while and it just has "Arcade" written all over it. I think everyone getting excited about this title are just looking for something new and fresh, which this is, but it is definately--100%--arcade racing at it's best. I will be heading back to EB tommorrow to return it, might pick up GP3 for the heck of it. Nascar HEAT is a very good game, don't get me wrong, but it is an arcade racer and only a decent one at that. You can flame me as well, but please remove your tongue's from Ed's butt before replying is all I ask. "Ben" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

So far I'm not very impressed with it and agree that you get air *way* too easily. I think they are catering to the arcade players by making it so easy to get air but hard to guess their intentions. I am going to play this a couple more days before deciding if I should return it or not, I don't think I can make that decision as quick as some of you. But if I had to decide now, it would get returned. It's just not that good. Don't know how else to put it, it's an "o.k." arcade nascar game with some effects thrown in to make it kinda like a sim. Gee, I was wondering what felt so strange. :-) All due respect, Scott, but just because a representative from a publisher is up here & many people seem to appreciate that, I think your comment is a little ignorant. You may not have been around way back when when I was at Papyrus but I was up here posting back then, too. So were a few other publishers. I just don't see that any more. Perhaps it's people like you that make publishers eventually give up? Ever think of that? Nah. Well then, how 'bout this. Maybe the postings that seem to irritate you so much are from people that don't want us publishers to give up up here? So, "all I ask", Scott is that you try to think before you hit that little send button on your postings. Your posting is otherwise intelligent, but a lot of people are going to just ignore it because of the last gratuitous line. --ed. I only have the demo, but played about 3-4 hrs total on Richmond and Daytona. Im in UK and although we get NASCAR on digital I can't say I'm a fan, I think you have to follow a team/driver for that. I played it for fun and it certainly has been that. Can't comment about the physics as I've never raced NASCAR but it is very challenging trying to set a top time or win from the back. I can win from the back in Daytona Day and Night (shorter) on hardcore but opposition is only medium. I still havent won at Richmond despite starting on pole once and always in the top 5, just get too wild late on. I have GP3 and may play it again if it gets fixed enough or if I really get bored with everything else, personally, I think NH is more fun than GP3 although maybe not a great sim. I am looking forward to N4 with the GPL engine, being a GPL fanatic (who does play other games). NH not avail in UK but I may have bought on impulse if it was. So you're saying that the full version is completely different from the fantastic demo that I've been playing for the past two weeks? The demo version I have is so much better than any Papyrus NASCAR sim that a comparison would just be silly, and with NASCAR 4 still six months away from shipping I'm not going to pass up NASCAR Heat just because N4 *might* be better. Had Hasbro included a paintkit with the same features as Papyrus, it might have made this "Heat" game a keeper. I can't believe it's not there. First of all, Great comback Ed!!, I have to say that though I am not a big fan of Nascar, but I have enjoyed the NH demo immensely for a couple of reasons. 1. GREAT driving model, the physics seem to be pretty realistic to me, and I'm heavy into GPL, so don't give me the stock "It's no GPL" line of BS. 2. GREAT developer support, this fact more than any other is the reason I'm going to buy this title, because Ed Martin has been in here PERSONALLY answering peoples questions AND dealing with all the pain in the ass whining and complaining that has become so common in the Sim Racing community. That kind of dedication doesn't come easy in todays world of Auto Sim Developers. I think Ed and all the people who worked on Nascar Heat have done a great job and I would hope that he continues to frequent this forum. Although I can't say that I'd blame him if he left. > I will be >heading back to EB tommorrow to return it, This is not directed specifically at you , but am I the only person who is bothered by this idea of buying something only to see if you like it and returning it if you don't? I thought product returns were supposed to be either: A; Defective merchandise B: Gifts from other people that had no idea what you already had, wanted, or liked. I was brought up to think that you investigate a product and decide if it is what you want or not, then if you decide it's for you, you buy it and keep it. If you bought it on a whim, why is it the store's problem because you made a bad choice? Along with the theoretical costs that piracy supposedly adds to the price of things, has anyone of you who thinks puchasing something is tantamount to a trial period ever considered the expense of processing lots of returned merchandise? With an available demo, why is it necessary to buy and return something, making a retail purchase into a demo at the store's expense? It strikes me as similar to the way some people send their food back in a restaurant even if there is nothing wrong with it, just because they can. ~daxe

I hear you but at the same time use the system, I don't need more restrictions. It's there to be used otherwise EB can drop it, it's there sales gimmick. Eitherway I'm not a huge returner myself, although I have returned a game. I'm disappointed that I have to do this. By the way I will be picking this up this weekend. I liked the demo it definitely has the quality to try it out. I won't know really how well I like this until I have a lan party to compare it to N3, DTR or Toca 2 for that matter... But I don't feel it all a morals issue since it's advertised by EB as a feature for buying there. You drop this and sales will even be less for the pc game houses. Just an FYI ... EB/Babbages/SoftETC simply reseal the box, place it back on the shelf, and re-sell it. They aren't losing anything. > With an available demo, why is it necessary to buy and return > something, making a retail purchase into a demo at the store's > expense? Not everyone has internet access. Not everyone has fast internet access. Not all games have demos, especially before the game's release. People should NOT be expected to dnload a demo anyway as proof that a product isn't a lemon. Besides, since when do demos, usually heavily crippled, actually fortell the quality of the actual full version? >It strikes me as similar to the way some people send their > food back in a restaurant even if there is nothing wrong with it, just > because they can. I waited tables for six years and don't see your comparison at all. I very rarely had someone send their food back just "because they could". 99% of the time it was because they weren't satisfied with it. They paid for it, and they *should* be satisfied with it. Same for the software. Why in God's name should someone be expected to take the loss on a $45 piece of software if they aren't happy with it, when almost no other product on the market is subject to those conditions? It's called capitalism/free-enterprise ... Businesses have return guarantees in place as a competitive measure to gain your business. If they don't want people to return software, then don't have the policy, its that simple. Some stores, such as CompUSA don't allow software returns. That's their choice. Nobody is taking advantage of anyone, the stores are allowing the returns by their own free will. As a consumer, you should LOVE this policy, because it protects you.

To Ed, I haven't played the game much but you guys may learn something positive about what sells. This is the Insane Possey Driving ng here. If it ain't hard then it sucks, granted it has to be hard but masterable.... But one thing I noticed in the demo was that your standard mode was very driver friendly, hopefully Papyrus hasn't scared the bejesus out of the common folk to give this a try, as the vast majority of Nascar racing fans (aka avg racing Joes) in America will be pleasantly surprised that they can control the car easily out of the box. Nascar 1-2-3 have always alienated the masses. In NH I immediately felt that this has this potential. As many Deerhunters are sold pretty much tells you how many Nascar's can be sold if you can make a game for them. I feel your standard mode may just be the ticket. This isn't a knock, as you guys have wisely created more professional modes that hopefully in your case will please the pro's in this group just because they are the ones that are gonna bitch and moan publicly. Believe me the typical fan is usually intimidated with Papy's offerings and won't play it, afraid of looking bad in a crowd. I can only say I've raced with many people that don't go looking for a racing game on the internet, practice etc... like people here do. I've raced many times with people who never kicked up a steering wheel on a pc and found out that they only enjoy games that they can immediately have success with, this game has that potential and that is where the money is. There isn't a NG in existence that can explain the likes of games like Deer Hunter but they sell a ton. Hopefully your game can be so bad. :) I know my views on this angle have always been passe in this group. But I know first hand there is nothing better than getting the boys over for a lan party and doing some exciting racing without having to practice first. Toca 2 still is the best overall in this arena, untterly speechless. (Imagine not being able to finish a season after 3 races because that last smash removed the ability to use your legs/arms/life anymore *vbg*) What with all the 'realism' level discussions that the sim community get so 'passionate' about I know I'd code it if I were a sim developer, but I think it's quite likely it is that the publisher/producer would prolly have that taken out damn quick. Well? Would You? and Why? Freeburn. Ed Martin wrote:

True, N3 makes N3 boring - not NH, it was boring long before NH.

Ian, Just to get us back off-topic again <G>, I'm running F12K on an AMD K6- 2 400 system with 64 MB of RAM and a 16 MB Voodoo Banshee video card, and I'm getting VERY good frame rates (low 20s) and very decent controller responsiveness. Have you tried any of the car setups from the Blackhole Motorsports site (http://www.bhmotorsports.com)? They do make a big difference in the car's feel and handling. Also, I typically drive the Ferrari car -- seems much more responsive than some of the other teams' cars -- so that might be making a bit of a difference. Definitely try turning off the pit lane objects, plus all details in the mirrors, and turning off particles and smoke, then see how the steering feels. Granted, you SHOULDN'T have to do this on an Athlon 750 system, but it might make a difference in the physics feel. Also, try the Ferrari with one of the downloadable setups. ALSO, do you run "FRAPS" to check your frame rate? You want a STABLE frame rate, not one which fluctuates as you move around the track -- a solid 20 fps all around is much better than 50 fps on some parts, with it dropping into the 20s on other parts. That fps drop will "feel" like lag to you, especially if you're in the middle of a turn and dialing in steering corrections. Let me know what's up on your end, and let's try to keep this thread as off-topic as we can! <G> (kidding, of course -- should we open a different thread, I wonder??) -- JB In article <8o693p$brv$[email hidden]>, "Ian P" <[email hidden]> wrote: > Changed the title a bit to bring it back on topic ;) > > I don't think it's a controller issue, I'm running low graphicsdetails at > 640 x 480 on Athlon 750 with V3 3000. <<Apart from the physics why do feel that N3 is boring>> Ok, I will try to give a serious answer to this legit question... N3 is running on a tired old game engine that is about 10 years old = BOORRING! N3 AI = BOORRING! N3 graphics = BOOORRING! N3 physics are a joke = BOOORRINNG! N3 sound = BOOORRINNGG! Other than that-it's a great GAME-because it damn well does not SIMULATE driving a 3500 pound stock car very well now does it?

Just one question. Does it still DNF you if you stop in the middle of a race for a replay? That kills it for me. A save game feature would also be important, but perhaps I could live without it. But the replay thing... man, if that's still in there, that's a real head-slapper. Half the fun for me in sim-racing, even in super hardcore, fireproof pants and balls of brass GPL, is to be able to immediately relive one of my best "moments", but then continue on with the race. you've done that once or twice already? How many races? Many Nascar drivers never get upside down their entire career, and you've managed to do it in 1-2 days? Without trying too? It's very hared to get airborne in NASCAR, maybe we're all a little to use to GPL? I had a friend who watched a replay of the demo, who doesn't do computer sims, and they thought the cars flying all over the place looked totally unrealistic, and then when everyone drove away because the damage model is totally non-existent they laughed, no one ever laughed at GPL... Ok yeah it's a comparison to GPL... big deal :) I'm not basing anything of this sim to GPL, except for others reactions. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8o3uvj$dhb$[email hidden]...

The "heavy" feeling may be due to controller lag -- try cutting back some of the graphics details in F12K to see if you can get more instantaneous controller response. Also, you MIGHT try tweaking the speed sensitivity under the controller settings -- that helps a bit, too, as the speed sensitivity makes the controller less effective at higher speeds, which results in something of a "heavy" feeling in itself. (Talk about off-topic, BTW! <G>) -- JB In article <8o474g$t3s$[email hidden]>, "Ian P" <[email hidden]> wrote: > I prefer GP3 to F1 2k, feels more like I'd expect an F1 car to drive,F1

I agree with you...although I am impressed with the demo, I would (and will as soon as it makes it to Toronto!!!) buy NH for no other reason than the honest answers to questions and openness that has been shown here. These guys will make a hell of a NH2 because they are here listening. I'll buy that, too. I have been looking forward to GP3 for years...can't buy a product that doesn't support split axis pedals out of the box, though. It is not very impressive relative to expectations. No listening whatsoever. AFTER the patch and when it hits the discount shelf, I'll pick it up. Marc. "Thomas JS Brown" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

N5 will be MUCH better than NH and N4... So I'm going to wait for that one... Actually NH2 will be the best sim ever (Unless GPL 3.0 finally comes out) so maybe I should just wait for that one. Well, by doing some calculations and spread sheets, I have come to the determination that app the same time that I retire, Nascar Racing 10 will have just been release, I will be running it on a 3ghz maching, and a video card running at 850 mhz with 480 mb of ram. Changed the title a bit to bring it back on topic ;) I don't think it's a controller issue, I'm running low graphics details at 640 x 480 on Athlon 750 with V3 3000. I have tried my MSFF wheel, F1 sim and a LWFF all give the same results. What does make it better is the hacked files made available a while back, but that is a complete pain because you have to change just the file for the car you want to drive as the AI can't handle them. As I am not particularly loyal to any team it's rather inconvenient. The physics engine in F1 2000 is very good IMO, but out of the box its not modelling an F1 car. This along with the fact that it takes a monster PC to run absolutely ruins the experience for me. My ideal F1 sim would be a cross between F1 2000 and GP3. From F1 2000. The (hacked) physics modelling, pit communications, the look left and right feature, other car sounds, the on dash tyre wear and temp indicator and current season. From GP3. The sharpness of the driving feel, FF, weather effects, track accuracy, telemetry, own car sound, being able to run (and see) all 22 cars and general smoothness of gameplay. Add in GPL's online racing code and VROC along with the camber and tyre pressure settings and it would be the ultimate sim ;) -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> PS I apologise if I missed anyone's fave feature from either sim <G> <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8o4eii$v03$[email hidden]... > The "heavy" feeling may be due to controller lag -- try cutting back > some of the graphics details in F12K to see if you can get more > instantaneous controller response. Everything you say above is wrong. I actually prefer the clean graphics of N3 to NH. I race online in N3 and the AI is definately not boring. Sound is better than NH. Physics are not too bad, maybe they can't fly like the cars in NH, but they are still pretty good. NH does have better physics (rather obvious), but that still doesn't make N3 boring so I think you are just overly opinionated. -- Nos
Hi John, it seems you misunderstand my feelings;) it's not a steering lag I'm feeling, the car just seems too heavy and unresponsive for an F1 car. The steering reacts the same on the Atlon as on my P2 333 o/c to 411 with low graphics. As for running on the Athlon, I don't have the mirrors on at all, I run in 640 x 480 with graphics on medium detail, cockpit on low detail and pit objects off, skybox to low etc. I haven't checked the frame-rate with FRAPS as I don't install any unnecessary programs on this PC, but the framerate I'd estimate as >30fps most of the time. I don't really have a prob with running the game (the graphics are low to ensure a good framerate but it will run higher and look better) Someone posted a hacked file for the vehicle physics and with that inplace the car reacted much more like I'd expect a Formula 1 car to react, eerily close to GP3 actually <G> Also with this hack the tyre heat seems more realistic, in so much as the tyres take longer to get up to temperature and then overheat, the original does seem to be a bit "heavy?" on tyre usage. Don't take this as a knock at F1 2000, I enjoyed it for a few months prior to the release of GP3, however GP3 does seem to suit my taste better at the moment. Maybe we'll just have to agree to diasagree on this title, as many other titles such as NFS Porsche I quite agree with you on, we must just want different things from F1 sims :) As for the different thread, changing the header slightly has actually opened a new thread in my version of OE. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8o6an1$3op$[email hidden]... > Ian, > > Just to get us back off-topic again <G>, I'm running F12K on an AMD K6- > 2 400 system with 64 MB of RAM and a 16 MB Voodoo Banshee video card, > and I'm getting VERY good frame rates (low 20s) and very decent > controller responsiveness. Well saying the type of crash doesn't matter since it would result in a DNF isn't a very good way to defend NH, as it seems that no matter what you do, it is very hard to get a DNF. If it had a good damage model, your arguments might slick, but since neither result in a DNF in this game, it's just another point against it. <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8o4c4e$s10$[email hidden]...

I thought a lot of people were, and a lot of people didn't buy it. But we also knew that N3 wasn't being boasted as the next great thing in sims by the publishers. We knew it was just a season\graphic update made by the non-core guys. Ahh!!! But I comeback with an obvious.... They bought the first one and found out how hard it was and didn't buy the others. Why are you guys kidding yourself with common folk? Believe me they think all typical sims are to hard. Is it so hard to understand? There is a reason why Standard is controllable and the default setup because the publishers know this is what is needed for the masses and IMO sane online racing in almost all cases. Nos, > crap. I think the employees at Papyrus would be quite insulted by > comments like that. Don't you? Yes and no, I think most of us tend to exaggerate our feelings to get the point across, and these developers need to realize that and try not to take these criticisms personally. The attention to detail is what made N3 an immersive NASCAR sim. All the little things that we now take for granted in a Papyrus sim are what is missing from NH. The guys that made N3 have nothing to be ashamed of, especially when you consider that they made that game in about six months, once they put "the real N3" - now known as N4 - on hold. If my expectations had not been set so high earlier by the GPL physics model that was supposed to be in N3, I probably would have loved the game.

There's no reason to get personal (or asinine) about a discussion of a computer game, Nos. I actually agree with most of your complaints with NH, but even if NH was as bad as N2000, that wouldn't make N3 a great game. N3 is a graphically enhanced version of the same tired old 2D physics based game we've been playing since N1. Here is my own "review" of NASCAR HEAT: NASCAR HEAT reminds me of GPL, which can be taken as a compliment or a criticism, depending on your point of view. It has a great physics engine, it's a blast to drive the cars, tweak the setups, and learn the tracks, but not much fun to race. People argue about whether it is a sim or a game. Well, it simulates driving a stockcar beautifully, but it doesn't do a very good job of simulating the game of stock car racing. In the demo, the AI seemed smart, but slow. So I assumed that in the full version they would be smart and fast on the higher settings. But just like real humans, they seem to have used up all their intelligence learning how to go faster. They just run you right off the road on the Pro setting. Yellows don't come out like they should, making longer races almost pointless, damage doesn't occur like it should - though the cars seem to catch air more than they should, and NH multiplayer makes N3 multiplayer seem functional. It's a great game engine with a lot of potential, but as it is now it's not a great racing game. I feel they should have ran an open beta, since most of these problems seem like they could have been easily fixed had they known about them. I have a bad feeling that this game is going to crash and burn with the arcade crowd whom it was targeted at. It just isn't much fun to "play". The things that might save it are the "Beat the Heat" challenges and Race the Pro feature, which are fun, and help separate Heat from the other NASCAR games. Tweaking setups, comparing hotlaps (the ghostlap feature should come in handy for this) and just driving the cars can be a blast for the hardcore sim crowd. But the "gamers" that only want to run races in arcade view - with their keyboard for a controller - aren't going to get much out of this game I'm afraid. Without consistent yellow flags and damage, strategy (a big part of what makes NASCAR racing great) isn't part of racing in NASCAR HEAT. I predict this game will develop a cult following ala GPL for it's immersive physics, great garage setup options, and hotlap competition potential. In summary, NH is not a serious platform for multiplayer (or even single player) competition in it's current incarnation. Therefore, my biggest complaint with NH is that, now that I've played it, there is no way I can go back to N3 - the difference in the immersion factor of the driving model is just night and day. "BH" <[email hidden]> wrote > Ahh!!! But I comeback with an obvious.... They bought the first one and > found out how hard it was and didn't buy the others. Nice suggestion. Nascar Racing 1 wasn't hard. It was also very entertaining. If you remember (or go back) to read any of the mainstream press, it was higly praised as an original game. Those people had fun with the AI at 80%, starting last and plowing into the field. It's a fun thing to do. I don't remember how many times normal gamers went to my house and enjoyed such thing. So for Nascar Racing 2 (among many features) Papyrus included an arcade-mode, which was also quite good at that time compared to everything else on the market. It also sold extremely well. I _KNOW_ my gaming business. I know what the mass market wants, it's common for me to refer to such things IRL. They don't want dozens of racing titles if they interest in racing. They'll get a couple, mostly very different types. Or they will simply buy a console racing game. Let's remember that there ain't much gamers on the PC platform who are focused mostly into arcade-based racing games. > Why are you guys kidding yourself with common folk? I don't, I was just stating that it's a false information. The Nascar line of software by Papyrus hasn't alienated the mass. It's Sierra's milk-cow! They sold millions of copies to the average gamer. Only Crammond has created a legacy in the simracing business as good as Papyrus's NASCAR line of products in terms of sales and how they reached the mass public. -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

Pretty fair review. I just don't find the driving model night and day. Run Bristol in N3 and see if it feels like it's on rails, the car is all over the place. Someone even said they can race with their hands off the wheel. Maybe at Talledega, but not any of the short tracks. Sure NH has a superior driving model. Still doesn't make N3 boring or crap. Let's remember that there ain't much > gamers on the PC platform who are focused mostly into arcade-based racing > games. First Arcade Racing is really a terrible name for what were talking here. PC Arcade racing does not reflect a racing game at the arcade at all or most racing games on a console. Arcade racing on a PC means a very controllable car, that lets you survive minor mistakes without losing it. Arcade and most consoles are 180 degrees in terms that they are very uncontrollable (ice skates) with completely unrealistic physics and wrecks. Isn't this like "Master of the Obvious" stuff here? Please go down to the local arcade and then come back home a put N3 in arcade they are the most opposite a thing can be in terms of handling. So the word Arcade is a terrible reference. But I believe these are some of the top sellers: (I'm sure I'm missing many more...) MTM 2 MCM 2 NFS Porche Toca (International) Collin Mcrae (International) All these games sold very well and they are very natural in the ways a typical driver would expect a car to handle based upon their normal driving experiences. Then one wonders how many play Nascar on Arcade or DTR less than 100%? Add online racing and the need for control amongst all types of racers is needed even more. BH

Hi, I was also going to post a message along these very same lines too Francois, but you did it for me.. :) I have often wonderd about some of the comments that i have read in RAS over the last few years, concerning the response/flaming that developers recieve from a sad few individuals.. The developers know that these sad few that do tend to go over board on the abuse and flaming are not a true representation of our sim racing community, so if they use this excuse to pull out of discussions and feedback from RAS, then IMO they didn't want the feedback to begin with. Most developers know who the sim racing community is and true and honest feedback can be had here for any developer seeking it, but for a developer to say that because Joe Citizen and his minority group of followers give me a hard time, then i think i will not bother coming back here, is total rubbish... The idiots that post here are a minority and the developers know that, so they should just ignore the rubbish and take note of the real issues, both good and bad with their products, that the RAS regulars can supply and not punnish the RAS regulars for the tactics of a minority few. I have only tried the demo of Heat, and while i liked the driving physics, i didn't like the in-car graphics of the cockpit. It just looked and felt a bit "flat", for want of a better word, and the gauges were dark and hard to read, but i have only tried it in 800x600 mode with a V2 card, so it could look a lot better with a better video card, but IMO, the in-car feeling that the cockpit of N3 gives me, feels more like i am in a car, where as i feel i am looking at a flat screen picture in Heat.. That is not a flame, but just my observations. A few guys complained about the engine sound, but i liked the engine sounds of Heat. The feeling of acceleration and power is much better than N3 and it actually feels like it is a high powered V8, rather than a 6 cylinder automatic which is the feeling N3 portrays to me. The animated pit crews are great, yes i know it is only eye candy, but it really adds to the realism and feeling of immersion.. I only hope that Papy have seen the positive response that the animated pit crews have recieved in Heat and implement it into N4 as it really is a great immersive addition to the sim. Unfortunately it is hard to get a real feel for the driving model without a few laps of a road course, but some of the posts about road course handling have been encouraging, so it seems the physics engine is up to the task of road courses too. I am in the camp that feels there should be a save game feature, as it is sensible to include something that can be switched off if someone doesn't want to use it, in which case it keeps all camps happy, but without it, it only keeps a few happy.. Anyway, i only wanted to reply to Francois, saying i agreed with him, but i got a bit carried away... Ron Ayton Australia "Francois Dubuc" <[email hidden]> wrote in article <[email hidden]>...

Hey rrevved . . ahem I mean Ed, nice to see you're using your real name. Now you can insult people and take full responsibility ;-). You know I really don't have a problem with nicknames or callsigns, I find them intriguing actually. In fact, if you don't mind me asking, what does rrevved mean? Is it pronounced "revved" or "ar revved"? I also wonder what Nos means. I remember him changing it to some Prince like symbol for a while. Anyway, back to my point. The nickname thing only pisses me off when someone like Nos attacks someone else for no reason. My latest response, calling him an anon pussy was a bit harsh and I should have cooled off before hitting send. I was just pissed by his reaction of: "Who the hell are you?" As if I have to "be" someone to criticize him. Sorry, I don't have a cool nickname I guess I'm not "somebody" in this ng ;-). Okay, from now on I'm Dexlar the Iceman of the Crystalis Kingdom. I'll go by the initials D.I.C.K. Nah, that's not for me ;-). I'm glad to see he apologized to Tracey in another post, classy move. I do regret calling him a pussy and I too apologize. He is usually a thoughtful poster and just pissed me off lately with his strange hostile attitude (Nascar Heat Fever?). Alright enough sappy shit, where's that ng anger! I do find inflammatory, obnoxious, or macho tough-guy bullshit annoying as hell when it comes from an anonymous post. It's too easy to be brave behind the security of anonymity. My statement is that N3 uses a tweaked N2 engine which again was a tweaked N1 engine, The reason I'm confident about this is that my setups has transferred very nicely from one to the next, and those setups shouldn't work really, but they do, and the car responds just the same way when I alter the setups, responds in a way it shouldn't so the inherent flaws of the old engine must still be there <prepares to eat crow> Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

If so, then I agree, but I still say the N3 *physics* engine is crap :-), I enjoyed it quite a bit in it's n2 guise on TEN and N99 in the TPTCC series, but I sat down a couple of weeks ago and some laps at Sear to come up with a new setup for the team, and I have to say that I was very bored while doing so, and I happen to love Sears....... That doesn't mean N3 is crap, there's lot's of folks enjoying themselves playing N3, so for those it's obviously not crap, it's just that some of us have raced that same physics engine in several variations over the years now, and it *is* getting dated, and the little I have driven of NHeat so far only makes that even more obvious But if you're saying "same" as in "identical", then I guess you're right Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "Team Mirage" http://www.teammirage.com/ "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ * Spam is for losers who can't get business any other way * "Spamkiller" http://www.spamkiller.com

Hello Sydney . . . <using my best "Scream" voice> (Since confusion over references caused this silliness in the first place "Scream" is a horror flick where some guy terrorizes Sydney and in several scenes he calls her on the phone and says "Hello Sydney"). Alright, it's just not as effective with the long explanation. Seriously though, my point about anonymous bashing is NOT about macho crap where the offended poster tracks you down. What I was talking about was being responsible for what we say. If we are anonymous we may be uninhibited.
