Defending NASCAR Heat against complaints about flips

Alex Kihurani posted an exasperated defence of NASCAR Heat, arguing complaints about cars getting airborne came from unrealistic driving and that many critics were comparing it with Papyrus games rather than reality. Ed Martin of Monster Games agreed and predicted NASCAR Racing 4 would also differ from earlier Papyrus titles. Some still reported spins getting airborne too easily.

To me it was rather obvious that NH had quite good physics, but I'm not much of a Nascar fan (it's a taste thing), so I've been avoiding the longer NH threads. Bendito;

Another thing I like is when you completely flip the car on it's roof and rev the engine you see the car rock as a result of the engine torque. Ala GPL........... NH me up... Last time I saw Richmond there was NO CURB before pit road. Just some barrels and a painted line to mark the entrance of pit road.

I usually don't flame but I just can't take it anymore. Some of you people are so stupid. You think that the car flips or gets air too much if you run into the wall head on at 180mph. It doesn't make sense. Most NASCAR drivers don't try to commit suicide. Also, if you've ever even played GPL on the ovals and then play NH, it defidently feels like GPL with slicks, wide tires, and a 3,400 pound car. I mean, the car reacts just as a real car would. N3 almost makes you disrespect NASCAR drivers. It's so easy. You can put the pedal straight to floor and the car will stop, and you don't have to worry about loosing it in mid corner with weight transfer or wheels locking up, or just coming in a bit too hot and trailbraking too hard. Also, LFB in NH is necessary on road courses to keep the car stable, does that even happen in N3? I just got NH and LOVE it. It has a great feel, great FF, great graphics, great AI, great fps, etc. and you whine about a freakin paint shop, drug ads, and the cars getting too much air because you can't drive. Geez. Anyone who is a good GPL player can drive NH exactly like GPL and get good results. The braking, accelerating and feel is so similar to GPL it's scary, yet you put it down. I noticed after I play N3 or GP3, it takes a couple hours to get back to usual form in GPL, but with NH, I can switch back and forth no problem. Actually, NH has thought me how to be smoother and now I cut my GPLRank to = with Alison Hine, a 0.45! Give NH another chance, admit your stupid, or tell us an INTELLIGENT reason why NH is "arcade". Just my final argument. Tell me, does NH feel like it's pivoting from the center or steering from the front wheels? Do the brakes lock up if you slam on them? Does the car spin if you come in too hot or brake too hard while trailbraking? Does left foot braking give the front more brake bias to save spins and balance out the suspension? On road courses, can you transfer the weight forward, then do a pendulum turn of some effect? Do the spins feel canned? On road courses does the car get hairy under acceleration? At Sears Point, does the weight start to throw the car around at those esses? So tell me, what is "arcadey" other than some information panels while driving? Sorry, just REALLy had to get that out Thanks, Alex

Thank you Alex. The issue is that everyone seems to think Papyrus' N1-N3 are what "real" is all about. So, Heat is compared to that version of reality instead of actual reality in some people's cases. Of course, those folks will have to bite their tongue when N4 comes out next year because it will be very different from N1-N3... hehe, that is the problem, Ed. I'll bet N4 will be quite a bit different from NH too considering Papyrus is targeting a different audience. NH is a nice "stepping stone" into 3d physics and will probably help sales for N4 by preparing racers and advancing their skills. I'm just paranoid of Sierra at the moment. I hope they give Papy some artistic freedom. Ed Martin wrote: > > Thank you Alex. The issue is that everyone seems to think Papyrus' N1-N3 are what "real" is all about.

Well I'd just like the game to react correctly when I wreck not on purpose. Not abusing, but using the game engine. I don't want the car getting in the air when it shouldn't. If I get loose coming out of turn four at Richmond, and spin it, I shouldn't become totally airborne 2 or 3 times during that spin, then get hit by another car and fly all over the place like Need For Speed. No I shouldn't have wrecked in the first place, but in your example about locking up the brakes, developers shouldn't use the excuse that they don't need to include brake lock up, because well you shouldn't have screwed up anyways. But lets not fool ourselves, this isn't a make or break feature, how the car drives when your not wrecking IS more important than when you are, but should still be done right in a simulation. What Ed Martin said early may be true with some people, but I rethink more people are comparing the ability to get airborne to real life more. Anyone comparing it to N1-N3 obviously haven't put any thought in since, you CAN'T get airborne, those who have put the least bit of thought in are presumably comparing it to real life or some other sim. Normally if I'm even close to being involed in a wreck that'd possibly leave me upside down in real life the race is over for me anyway.

I did that in the demo, Hooked the curb and rolled. Never seen that in real life. But it is just a game. Well, that sums it up for physics realism and track accuracy in NASCAR Heat, I guess. Now, though, could you describe to me what happened the last time you got airborne in NASCAR 3? Was it similar to how it worked in NASCAR 99, or did it have more in common with NASCAR 2? Or was it maybe just a bit closer to GPL, perhaps? -- JB In article <[email hidden]>, Jeff Szarka <[email hidden]> wrote: > On Thu, 24 Aug 2000 21:54:31 GMT, "Alex Kihurani" <[email hidden]> > wrote: > > >I usually don't flame but I just can't take it anymore. Yeah, as someone who hates this game, you are right, and you know what, I will still play it for that reason, but only as practice, by myself on the track to learn how to correctly drive a stocker. The rest of the games still blows! All of it, the damage model, the extra wear factor to get more damage - but the tires wear out quicker, the god forsaken rolling starts, the I don't care that there are no cigarette and beer cars in the game because I'm used to putting them in myself, and personal pet-peeve, but something I may be wrong on - aren't these tracks too damn narrow, especially sears point. It doesn't look that narrow on TV, and I've been on Watkins Glen, and I know that the track appears wider in real life than in the game. It's only happened once in a test session, I checked that I wasn't assisted by the little "jump" going into the pits I got loose out of turn 4 and got up on 2 wheels, bounced, then on the other two wheels, bounced and got on the original two wheels, I looked at the reply and I did have it partially confused with another wreck where like 3 AI cars got airborne, as did I. But the part I described just now does exist. rrevved <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Thu, 24 Aug 2000 16:55:42 -0700, "Kai Fuller" <[email hidden]> wrote: > > > >I don't want the car getting in the air when it shouldn't.
