Re: Blatantly Unfinished GP3

34 posts by 14 people · 25 Aug 2000 - 28 Aug 2000 09:15 UTC

Is GP3 blatantly unfinished?

A poster claimed GP3 was riddled with bugs and essentially a beta of GP4. Others asked for specifics; complaints included identical car handling, controller problems with four-axis wheels and split-axis setups, and AI oddities, which Greg Cisko argued were design limitations rather than bugs. A side argument compared the feel of slides in GP3 and GPL, with references to real kart racing.

I have to agree. It is infested with a multitude of "bugs" that are embarrassing. Personally for me, the genius of Ubisoft is now more then ever clearly forfront. KGH "My first car had 2 carburetors that required OIL...a 1963 MG Midget"

GP3 is basically a work in progress. Hasbro must have pulled GC off it because they reckoned they had enough to beat the competition... There are so many things that are unfinished in the game which are *blatantly* obvious to anyone who plays it for a little time. It looks like a beta version of GP4. They'll now sell us the update in Sept (very quick...) and will offer GP4 early next year. How much more loot they will have made by these tactics. Greed rules. I have mixed feelings about the game itself. Potentially an excellent game but it's flawed. The bugs ruin the game. I was initially very impressed but that has gone. One bug in a game like this utterly ruins a race and consequently ruins the game. I will NOT buy any update. To thwart such grasping practices I suggest that no one else does either.

Exactly revved! What bugs? There has been a good amount of fair criticism leveled at GP3, but bugs? I've seen plenty of glitches and annoyances but as far as I know the game does not have any 'killer race stops in the middle computer locks up on the last lap oh my fucking god kill kill kill the bastards" bugs. I once went on a three day bender and while recovering on the fourth I saw a number of bugs, some quite frightening and one in particular that actually tried to engage me in conversation. Thankfully they were gone the next day. My suggestion is to wait a couple of days and then start spraying. er, would you mind telling us of these bugs? Most of the bug reports I've seen here are false.

Not really Gerry, the reason is that GP3 has been put down by a number of people in RAS to the extent that If I hadn't been a fan of GP2 and known about GP3 before it's release I'd be quite turned off by this game right now. That's unfair to Hasbro and especially GC who put a lot of effort into GP3. I'd even go as far as to say that the "feel" for the car in some aspects is far superior to GPL. And i mean that. In GPL you get no feel during a slide and ridiculous feedback. There are many criticisms of GP3 cars not getting damaged "realistically" of course not compared to the zero damage model in GPL. There is never ever visible damage to cars in GPL. The only thing that can be damages is the suspension and that is very unrealistic anyway as you can never see the damage and instead of having sever handling problems or the car dipping to one side, the car just drags to one side. Of course theres the fact that Papy were too lazy to include pit stops, when GP3 are criticised for having non-3d pit crews.... I'm not taking a punch at GPL, but when compared to GP3, GP3 wins hands down in some areas... why must GP3 then be put down? Is it the fear that something might actually better GPL?

Well nothing you can do about that opinions (for example: i only play F1 2000 cause i like to play that via internet play....... but that doesnt mean GP3 is not good !) Yep, that's what I'll do, I'll read your post, fire up GP3 and go through T1 at Spa with my foot welded to the floor in 5th. Then I'll pull over and wait for one of the AI to go past, so I can revel in the sound of the other cars engines ... hmmm, do they run on helium? Then I'll carry on round to the pits, taking in a bit of curb here and there, again revelling in the FFB from the rumble strip. On arrival at the pits there will be more revellment as I admire the floating cars. They do run on helium! Oh look, theirs Shumi in his 6 speed Ferrari. Then I'll take the Minardi out for a spin, it's just as fast as the Ferrari you know, even handles the same. I know, how about a R.A.S Grand Prix, come on, 20 of us, over the net ... wait ... no, that won't work :(. Mind you the rain effect is nice; takes a little more than nice rain though :-/.

I've found 2: 1. The cars all handle the same, GP3's not loading the right chassis for each mark. 2. No FF from the rumble stip. Or is that a feature? 3. No 7th gear in the ferrari. " " " " " ? 4. Invisible wall to the left of the pit entrance at Silverstone. A real bug :) 5. The AI keep doing strange things. Feature? Oops, make that 5. Seriously, we could argue about what's a bug and what isn't. But to still use the the same old slo-mo code, with all the implications for multiplayer and hot lapping, come on! So GP3 is one of the best modern F1 sims around is it? Pah! give me 1967 any day.

I'm with you all the way except for one small problem. You are just pontificating and not explaining what the problem is. The first clue that you are full of shit is that you claim the game is unfinished. That is total horseshit. GP2 is pretty complete and GP3 (err 2.5) builds on that experience. Bugs??? I don't think so, as all of the "problems" with GP2.5 are design features. -- [email hidden] > I have mixed feelings about the game itself. Potentially an excellent > game but it's flawed. Greg, i first raced OF1R (arcade-ish) races on www.mplayer.com There are now some guys who bought F1 2000 and meet each other there. After that they are racing by TCP/IP (so no gameserver). I have to admit that not all the time, the online part is working well. EA didnt built it for this (actually they were surprised it even works). Anyway, my experience is when you are with people from the same country then most of the times it works well. I always race a guy from the same country and we never have probs. We also use Roger Wilco to speak during the race, VERY COOL (like "move over you ....., i am faster, heheh") Try it once HJ

Listen.... try this... In dry weather an modern day F1 car is not going to drift through Eau Rouge, so..... Take a few trips through there in your lotus.... next, Take a few trips through there in the rain in GP3.... which one lets you feel the slide more? GP3 by far? The FF effects in GP3 give you a true representation of the sideways action of a car. GPL just drags the wheel to one side. This tells you what the car is doing but it is not how a car should feel. Heck, judging by the response I don't think you've had too much involvement in actual motorsport, even go along to an outdoor kart track and turn but thing sideways in a corner.... then you'll see..

I suggest you do. I really do think that in the wet conditions and with the FF you feel the wheel go light and it drifts sideways... GPL is done well but you just don't get the "feel" for the slide. You get *a* fell, just not *the* feel. Oh and I've got a Pro-kart of my own thanks with some experience in other classes.

As you know, the reality of turning the wheel in a kart, with the very heavy centering force, does not equate to what we feel in games. Subtle FFB is there to help replace the lack of seat_of_the_pants FB we get in real racing. The FFB in games has to FEEL right, or be roughly what you'd expect to feel. For me, while GPL's FF may not be realistic to the highest degree, it does talk to me in a language I can understand. The FF in GP3 doesn't have to tell you as much as the FF in GPL. There's more stuff going on in GPL after all. For me, there's just something missing from GP3. I'm not at one with the car if you see what I mean. I'm only really interested in racing for points against other people, so for me, GP3 is only a hot lap toy. Next time you roll you kart out, think about how the steering feels, then think about driving a sim with steering that feels like that! Cheers P.S are you in the UK?

Erm, well looks like I've probably gone the wrong way about making my point (again....hehe) I don't really mean that GPL is bad. What I mean is that you can often be sliding the car and don't even know it, just small slides I mean, but you often can "feel" it.... I kinda think the although the FF in GPL helps hell you how the car is reacting or where it is going it doesn't give the true feel of a 1967 F1 cars steering wheel during the slide but I may be wrong. What I like about GP3 is how the cars slide in the wet, the FF doesn't tell you where he car is going very forcefully but the wheels goes light as if the wheels have lost traction and are sliding across the surface of the track. That's what I like. GPL and GP3 simulate the "sliding" effect very differently from each other, GPL give you a better feel for where the car is going yet I kinda think GP3 shows how the car actually feels in a slide. Then again, one is simulated on a wet surface while the other is just slippy due to hard tyres, no downforce...etc.. Even when sliding in dry weather the cars tend to grip the road again easier then when sliding in the wet.

What about "virtual racing" on the Sega Mega? :-)

Did you try declaring your wheel under Windows as a pair (two controllers) 2-axis, 2-button joysticks? That's how GP3 sees the joysticks, and works with many (but not all) wheels. -Gregor
