I think a lot of the reason why there is so much argument about NH being
arcade or sim is because of 2 different expectations. This is my theory
about the fights.
Person #1 (which is also me) thinks a sim should simulate real world
physics. Meaning the game has a great feel, the car reacts to the
environment correctly, realistic FF, etc. and you can drive it like you
would a real car. Graphics and little things about the motorsport are
important, but can be sacrificed.
Person #2 thinks a sim should simulate every small aspect of the motor
sport, from the drug ads to caution flags. They want the rules to be just
like they were in a NASCAR race and concentrate on all the small details
that would make their race more like the real thing. Graphics, track
accuracy, etc. are extremely important. The important things are what you
can pretty much pick out from watching someone ELSE play.
Just a thought. None is neither right or wrong. I do prefer NH over N3 since
I'm not a diehard NASCAR fan (though I do enjoy watching it, just not too
crazy about it) and I like sims for physics and don't care that much about
how true it is to NASCAR, while N3 may not have such good physics but is
very true to NASCAR.
I'm happy, I believe NH will sell so extremely well and encourage other
developers to make sims which have very realistic physics. Just look at the
ratings at avault.com! That really shows you it's fun for the average
person, and a good sim. Never thought you could get the best of both worlds.
Thanks,
Alex

Personally, I would like a sim with both. And I think most people here
would. N4 will probably meet those requirements.

N4 goes its a long way off and who knows what it will be like. I recall
Papy stating that N3 had the GPL physics then at the last minute "oh
we cannot implement it now due to constants"
It wasn't at the last minute, and I guess they could have just delayed the
new physics engine and not given us a new or "revamped" product, and we
would all have been racing N2 up to this point. Instead, we got N3 which was
built from a "gutted" N2 engine, we got higher resolution graphics, we got
built in internet mulitplayer with a matching service, in a fairly short
period of time we had many servers available to us through the kind efforts
of many fine folks, etc etc. What other racing sim during this period, has
offered us anything close to the muliplayer capabilities of N3? Even Heat
will struggle with this, especially out the chute, due to the high bandwidth
requirements for the physics engine. Heck, look at all the work Papy did
building us a better multiplayer function, opening the beta to the public
and going through many revisions before coming out with the final patch.
What do I, the average "hardcore" racer, want in a sim? I want realistic
physics, decent graphics, decent ai, and incredible multiplayer ability
available at my fingertips. And then, 2 years later, I'm gonna want all that
again in a new version. Not an easy task, but one Papy has a lot of
experience with.
