Since I've decided that Heat just isn't for me, it's going back to the store
Monday. Should I pick up GP3 in exchange? I never ever played GP2, so I
have no idea what it will be like. The last couple years I have mostly been
racing Nascar 2, 3, and GPL and enjoyed them all. I did buy an F1 sim made
by Ubisoft (forget it's name) a couple years ago and actually kinda liked
it, I liked the different feel of the F1 car compared to Nascars. I never
really got into the F1 sim though, it was around the time that TEN was in
it's prime and I mostly raced N2, I think I eventually traded in the Ubisoft
F1 sim for some other game. I'm also not very familiar with how F1 rules
work, and how to tweak the car as well as a Nascar. As a newbie to the
Crammond F1 games, is GP3 an enjoyable experience? I'm not greatly
concerned with graphics, although I don't want *bad* graphics. I would like
more of a sim experience, even if that gives it a steep learning
curve.....I'm definately not looking for an arcade racer. I'm more
concerned with realism, fun factor, customizability (graphic settings, race
settings, etc), a believable physics and damage model. I'm NOT looking for
N-Heat's damage model LOL.
Oh one more thing, and this may sound dumb, but I love huge descriptive game
manuals. =)
Long live the F4 binder manual hehe.

You didn't like NH? Oh well...
Well anyways, GP3 is okay. The graphics are pretty bad, they look like
average graphics from early 98 (like the season they have in the game).
They're very grainy, but the colors are nice. The driving model is pretty
good. Feels similar to GP2, but it still isn't bad. It has a fun twitchy
feeling like an F1 car. It's enjoyable, but if your that picky that you
don't like NH, you won't like GP3 :) The pit crews are 2d sprite thingies
and they like overlap the cars and stuff, really hard to find your pit, then
the textures kinda jitter, it's just as hard to damage the car in GP3 as it
is in NH, and the physics in NH are a bit better IMO. I would personally
just get both. GP3 is VERY subjective. Some people like it, some don't, but
it's about a 50/50 split.
Thanks,
Alex

GP3 has a crappy damage model too. You can smack a wall and sustain no
damage. But, there is a damage editor available so you should be able
to fix that problem using the editor. If you never played GP2 then GP3
will be completely new sim to you so yes I think you will like it.

You will surely love the GP3 manual :)
I think you should check old posts about GP3 at www.deja.com/usenet ,
opinions about GP3 vary slightly to say the least.
I absolutely like it and bought it, it was in one way a big letdown
because it wasn't the improvement of GP2 which we all hoped for, but
it's imho the most fun F1 sim out there. F1 2000 has imho a much
better driving model, but you'll need a very fast PC to run F1 2000
with a full AI field.

Thanks for your input, I decided not to wait to Monday and went over to
EB to exchange Nascar Heat for it tonight. =) It's installing right now.
On a side note, the EB guy said something to the effect of "What's with
all these copies of nascar heat being returned?" He said it to the other
EB flunky as I was picking GP3 off the shelf.

me, the graphics are it's greatest plus.

Ya know, only been racing GP3 for a little bit now but it looks very, very
solid. Graphics are very good, not all wishy-washy and blended like some of
the newer games, they actually look.....uh.....lifelike. I'm not sure why
so many people are saying bad things about GP3, it seems like a solid sim so
far. Again, I don't have alot of knowledge or background on F1 racing so
maybe I can't nit-pick about little details that it's missing. And I also
have never ever played GP2 so I can't complain that it's too similar/too
different or whatever. I can just say, as GP3 being my first F1 sim I've
purchased in awhile, I am very impressed by it. <shrug> It seems to be one
of the more solid racing simulations that I've ever raced. I can comment a
little more after I've played it for a few days, but just from first glance
I have no idea where these people are coming from that are comparing GP3 to
Atari's Pole Position. I'm starting to think that the people in this group
are a little too nit-picky. =)

Andre-
So does F12000 run as well as GPL? If i run GPL fine will F12K be fine?
Do you reccomend it? I like GP3 but the physics could be better. I love GPL.

It is because of these low paid "flunkies" that EB has a "no questions
asked" return policy, be nice!

Is it worth picking up just for hotlapping then?
Thanks-

400 system with 64 MB of RAM and a 16 MB Voodoo Banshee card, and I can
get 20+ fps consistently (which isn't bad, considering that GP3 only
give you 24 fps max at best). I had to turn off pit lane objects,
smoke, and particle effects, plus all objects in the mirrors (you can
run with cars only, but I mainly hotlap in practice mode, so the
mirrors are just eye candy) -- after doing all of this, though, the
game becomes VERY playable (like I said, 20+ fps), even at a 1024 x 768
screen resolution on my "wimpy" system, so I'm sick and tired of all
these guys with PIII 600 systems or better who say that F12K is
unplayable.
With graphic details cut back like this, I am able to run quick races
with a full field of opponents -- the key is to run the latest patch
(1.09, I think), AND make sure that you use the "formation lap" (or is
it "parade lap?") option. This forces you to watch a slow, boring one-
lap circuit of the track, but all the textures load during this period,
which makes for MUCH smoother starts.
All in all, F12K is no more taxing now that GP2 was when it first came
out (remember how much you had to cut back on detail with that on a 386
or low-end 486 system? Yet we all raved . . .).
Just my $0.02 in defence of F12K -- hope this helps.

Oh well. I quite like NH myself.

Exactly. It's only that people expected even more from it than what they
got. I played GP2 to no end and GP3 is much more than just a facelift
(did you already try any wet driving?). Graphics are exactly that,
lifelike, as the texture filtering is only used where needed, not in all
places. Only the best of graphics artists in sim industry seem to know
that texture filtering is not always desirable to make things look
lifelike (check Falcon 4.0 or Longbow 2 flight sims, for example), and
GP3 sticks to that philosophy.
Have lots of fun racing!
