I've always been partial to 3dfx video cards and as my main computer
passtime is GPL Voodoo cards have always worked just fime for me. (FYI,
though I am a GPL nut, I'm no great shakes - GPLRank +21.64) My
current computer (PIII 500) came with a Voodoo3 AGP card. Now, with NH
out, I decided to upgrade to a V5, to get higher resolutions. But
there's seems to be something about my motherboard that the V5 doesn't
like. When I install it -- and I've verified with 3dfx tech support
that it's installed properly -- the computer simply won't boot. I've
spent hours on the phone with the 3dfx tech guys, and have tried
everything including a new power supply, but the #@%! thing won't work.
Still, I'd like to use higher resolutions than 800x600 in NH, so am now
thinking of a non-Voodoo card. Which ones should I be considering?
It's been so long since I had anything else, I've lost touch ...

Hmmm . . . I'm a Voodoo guy myself, but I've been looking at a future
upgrade. Here's some stuff to consider:
The ATI Radeon sounds very promising for 3D gaming applications
(despite the fact that it's an ATI card <G>), and the GeForce-based
cards are supposed to be VERY good. You might also consider a TNT2
card -- CompUSA has a CardEX TNT2 card with 32 MB of RAM for $79, I
think, which seems like a real bargain. The GeForce cards seem to have
some driver stability problems, but the TNT2 cards all have VERY stable
reference drivers available now.
Also FWIW, there is a D3D patch available now for GPL, which will make
it playable if/when you get rid of your 3Dfx card.
BTW, you ARE great shakes in my book -- my GPLRank iscurrenlty 244.46,
but I've reduced it by over 120 points in the past week, so it's
getting better! <G>

Before you buy.
I'd recommend looking at the GeForce 2 GTS. At 1280x1024 max detail / High
Detail cars, FRAPS 1.2B gives me 51fps around Richmond looking backwards
over the pack from the lead car.(Drops to 35-40'ish when there's a spin with
smoke though) .
Another comparison was GP3 , at Monaco starting at the back of the grid ,
1280*1024 , 25fps everything on inc mirrors , I get 50-75% PO at the start,
we as my V5 gives 150-200%PO, both on a K7, 700, 128mb.
Cheers , Jason
One last Quote from one review site:
"Looking back on our Voodoo 5 review, we showed you how the Voodoo 5's only
advantage over the NVIDIA GeForce 2 was the superb anti aliasing method of
the V5. But with the advanced capabilities of the D3 drivers, we'll show you
that the V5's antialiasing has been matched, and even improved upon in terms
of quality.
While some may say that full scene anti aliasing is not that great of a
feature, it is none the less very useful and can enhance the graphics of
many current games, especially for those with lower end systems or those
with monitors with lower resolutions."
