Nephews (10 and 8) visiting so I put in Midtown Madness for the first time
in many months. The sky is a multi-coloured mess with my GeForce 2, which
so far, has worked flawlessly since I upgraded from a V3-3000. Anyone else
have problems with this combo?
Marc.

You can either
A.) Turn off pedestrians
B.) Download the patch below which fixes the bug that actually happens with
a few cards & not just GeForce's (same thing happened on my V5)
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/deskapps/games/public/midtown/patch/mmpat.exe

WTF!!? Where did you get this info from?
Here's the list.
5.22 = All games work* , FSAA enabled but slow, some menus ran like oil
paintings.
5.30&5.32= All gmes work*, FSAA matches V5 in quality & speed, OGL
Faster,D3D slightly slower than 5.22's.
6.0x = All games work*, Overall speed increase in FSAA,OGL,D3D
6.18 (Det3) = All games work* , FSAA surpasses V5&ATi Radeon(32mb vivo)
speed & quality.
These comparisons were made on :
Hercules 3D Prophet II 32mb running the above drivers.
&
V5 5500, on 1.0.1 drivers (I'm not even going to mention 1.0 drivers as they
were dismal and ran slower than a V3/TNT2 M64.
*All games means all the ones I've tested so far.
Racing:
GPL (D3D)
GP3
EA's F1-2000
Eidos World Grand Prix (D3D&D3DT&L)
NFS: Porsche 2k
Nascar Heat
Nascar 3
SCGT
SBK 2K
Microprose GP500
MCM2
Midtown Madness
General:
Delta Force : Landwarrior (demo)
Deus Ex
Q3 (crap game IMO)
UT
MW3
Devil Inside
Heavy Metal F.A.K.K 2
X-Tension
etc etc... list goes on to about 50 so far.
I think a lot of problems come from there being a lot of beta releases in
zip format which stand more chance of being cocked up and therefore lead to
problems, it would be nice if all driver installs were self-installing like
the CL fasttrak's and 3dfx's it would certainly make my job easier.
Cheers, Jason
I noticed the same thing back in the old days of TNT2Ultra. I loved the
display the card provided, but drivers were a pain. Seems like every week a
new one would come out, and everyone waited breathlessly for it in hopes
that it would cure all ills. Generally the new driver would be slower than
it's predecessor. I was building about 18 systems a year then (just part
time, before Tweaks & Reviews took up all my spare time), and it was a real
pain. When I finally switched to V3000s all that went away.
I had hoped with the new cards, the nVidia problems went away, as Jason
suggests. But if you check through post on here and in the game forums, you
see everyone giving the same advice, 'hey man, get rid of those 5.3x drivers
and get the 6.18. It fixes everything'. Well, the driver versions have
changed, but the story is sill the same. Heard it a dozen times. Obviously
I'm the kind of guy that doesn't mind Tweaking things now and then <g>, but
that stuff got old, fast.
I'm sure Jason is having good luck with his, some people do. So not everyone
is going to have problems. And, there are a lot more patches now for those
games.
BTW, the Radeon64, in 32bit color (and especially at higher resolutions)
does blow away the fastest GTS2. But it's 16 bit speed is not that
impressive.

Now I'm interested! Unfortunately I could only get the 32Mb version Radeon
(64Mb not due here for 2 weeks).
What Games did you use to compare the Radeon64 against the GF2 GTS and what
drivers on both , as I found that in all my test's the GF2 was faster in all
including 32bit (I heard they got a bit overhyped on previews as most test
figures were supplied by ATI, when they couldn't ship a test board).
Agreed the Radeon does boast a greater feature set, but we'll have to wait
for the full DX8 before that comes in to play.
I'm assuming you have both a GF2 & Radeon in order to make the claim that it
blows away the fastest GF2.
Please don't tell me you haven't actually used a Radeon against a GF2 on
6.18 drivers as that just makes you as bad as the rest of the idiots that
spout how much better their card is over another that they haven't actually
owned and just read about in a review.

From Sharky Extreme:
"It is apparent that the raw processing power of the GeForce2 GTS allows it
to tear through our low resolution testing, where its four pixel pipelines
definitively dominate. The story changes at 1024x768 and above, however,
where greater memory bandwidth and three texture units allow the Radeon to
maneuver its way past the GeForce2. Even at 1600x1200, the Radeon manages to
deliver very playable frame rates on all of these high-end platforms."
WinBench 2000 - Coppermine 800
Radeon64DDR 110
Nvidia GeForce2 GTS 95.1
Several other tests in their review, and in several reviews, show the same
results, including the Q3 test, and that's what the nVidia drivers are
written to optimize. They don't fair as well in the UT tests, where the 5500
still scores very well.
At the time of the post, I didn't have a Radeon. I trust Sharky and many of
the other sites, and have no reason to believe that the results would be
different if I did the test myself, do you? Without seeing the tests myself,
I trust that they are true. I've never seen a baby pigeon or a cashew shell,
but I trust that they exist. I guess you just have to believe some things,
sight unseen.

>that just makes you as bad as the rest of the idiots
I'm not called an idiot too often though I suppose some have thought it.
Now, go back to your post and count the number of drivers you've used
already on the nVidia card. Can you guess what I'm thinking?
