I used to be a loyal 3dfx user, but sence I live in shitty
(economically) Croatia, I cannot upgrade to a GTS2 Ulra, or even
voodoo 5500.
So I was considering gtsMX as an affordable solution for the only game
I really care about GPL.
So my question is, with the d3d patch, what would be faster, a voodoo3
3000, or a geforce2 MX.
Also, I checked out GPL on a friends tnt2 ultra card with d3d patch,
but the rail guards (ancoves) like turn 3 at the Glen dissapear some
50 meter in from of the car, giving you the illusion they are not
there down the track. The whole thing ends up looking differently, you
think there is more run of space, but when you come closer there isnt.
Ity seems the mip mapping just filters the rail away. Can that be
helped?
Thanks for your answers!

If GPL is your thing then you are better off to save some money and
get a Voodoo3. The GTSMX won't be any faster in GPL, and in fact is
probably slower.
Look into adjusting the LOD (line of detail) for the TNT2 card. Should
be in his display properties somewhere. I don't have that card so not
sure if that's it, just a guess.

36FPS in 1280 resolution!! 19.0 when starting on the INDY track(heavy
gpaphics track). Since 36 fps is max fps the game allows, its a good
choice for GPL.. on N3 it gets 30fps solid at 1024 resoltion and on NH
at 1280 resoltion and all graphics on, it get 27fps... 35-41 if you turn
down the graphics a tad...

hey i have one with a 450 mhz celeron, i upgraded from a tnt1 and
gained roughly 15 fps on my tnt (ie tried tnt with all gfx options on,
all cars at start, then used mx.) GPL is cpu-intensive so unless you
have around a 450 or above you'll be limited by the cpu(faster card
wont help) the d3d looks like crap on my machine compared to opengl at
same res. but with mx i can run it at a higher res than before..and
looks great:) gpl is made for 3dfx cards though, so my *guess* is
unless you do other games, keep the voodoo3 and do a cpu upgrade..But
wait. looking at your question..i guess you mean will gefMX with d3d
be faster than voodoo with glide..I would think so, but dont know:) If
you upgraded cpu though, then you'd be limited by the voodoo;) good
thing about mx is you have to get a pretty fast cpu for the mx to be
the limiting factor..good card cheap price ~100$ on pricewatch.com
btw i seem to remember eric t busch(papy employee) post on how his
tnt2ultra ran 1600x1200 with all options on at 36fps with opengl, and
mx is faster than ultra, so you should be ok..(opengl being noticeably
slower than d3d, but that was a LONG time ago, memories fade..)
geez i hope that made sense, i dont feel like editing it now...;)

and that seems very fast. I need to replace my banshee, and it is too
expensive to buy a voodoo 5500, so I am thinking between voodoo3 3000
and GTS MX. I am leaning towards MX, because of T&L that WSC will
support, and also some other games like B17, but my main game is GPL,
and I am building a system around it.
The only fear is that mipmaping the guard rails into oblivion right in
front of your nose problem, but hopefully I could solve it in Nvidia
drivers. So, that's the dillema. My targer res is 1024x768, and I
would like to have the graphics maxed out and get a good framerate at
the starts.
So what do you guys think.
Thanks!
P.S. I also have a BH6 rev 1.5 MB, 128 Mb memory and a SB Live
soundcard, with a LWFF wheel plus CH pedals / sweet for GPL
