Could Stallone's CART film 'Champs' spur a new CART sim?
Brett hoped Sylvester Stallone's CART movie might prompt a new CART game. Most were sceptical, citing a scathing report from the Toronto filming, though some speculated Papyrus might make a CART sim with the GPL engine after NASCAR Racing 4. The thread included jokes about Stallone's height.

Automated summary.
Much as I hate to say it, I could see Stallone's movie driving the nail
in the coffin for CART.
Here's a pleasant and intriguing thought, though: Imagine a CART/IRL
game based on the NASCAR Heat game engine. Yum! <G>

I'm with you. I mean, after N4, they have to use the improved graphics
model on the GPL engine for something, and what would be better than
to modify the GPL engine for some downforce :)

What I want to know is how they're going to get that humongous Sly
Simian into a Champ car cockpit...
Anybody remember the absolutely vile TV series about Indycar (sorry,
Tony!) racing from the '80s (and yes, I *do* live in the past)? I think
they used Rahal's old "Otter Pops" car ... Man, it stunk.

BTW, anybody hear the mistake Unfortunately-NOT-Silent Sam Posey made in
his Belgian GP trivia question today? A big sloppy cyber-kiss for anyone
who knows A) What idiot mistake Sam made, and B) the name.

Well, Stallone is actually a lot closer in physique to the rest of us
simians. He's only 5' 6", and I'm sure if he does some aerobic exercise and
stops his weight training and overeating, then he could be close to the
ideal size for those cars.

This is a report from the shooting of the movie taken from

"I can smell a stinker already. The last couple of days Toronto's
University
Ave., an 8 lane artery into / out of downtown, has been partially shut down
from 6:30pm - 6:30am. The reason it seems is to shoot a car chase scene
where Sly chases the bad guy through city (in this case it's supposed to be
Chicago) driving a CART car, without a helmet (naturally).
Local TV news has shown a tow truck, with camera mount, towing the CART car
with Sly in it (at about 50 - 60 kph or 35 mph) with high speed special
effects sparks coming out of the underside. "

The ONLY movie I'm looking forward to is the new version of the Lord of
the Rings being filmed in New Zealand.
As far as a movie getting a video/pc game tie-in?? Well they'd have to
pay CARt, pay Stallone, pay Chicago, Pay Warner Brothers or whomever is
producing it...and then what-ever they have left in the budget they can send
to the programming team. If your lucky...Al Unser Jr's Arcade Racing
"might" be portable for the cash they'd have left.

No kidding? Man, they must have put him on a stepladder in that movie
with Sharon Stone ... He sure looks a lot bigger on the screen!

Yep. I wish I could learn his secret - I'm only 5' 8". In his earlier
films, where he plays bit roles, it's easier to notice his shortness. Maybe
celebrity makes you grow taller? :)

Bendito wrote:

Seriously, I think it's photographs and film/video. I knew Jackie
Stewart and Mario Andretti were pretty short, but it wasn't until I
found myself standing next to them that I truly appreciated how tiny
they were, and I'm a pretty-average 5'10". BTW, if anyone wants to hear
the story about how I ended up pumping gas for Andretti's Ferrari 712
Can-Am car, email me privately, as I'm pretty sure I'm past the "wordy
post" tolerance limit on this NG -- it's pretty funny though...
It's like a lot of race car pix and vids -- in photos of the Porsche
917, for example, where the car is by itself, or with a similar-sized
car, the thing looks like a behemoth. When you're standing next to it,
or you see a pic/vid of the thing in company with a familiar car, like
a Camaro or 911/914, you realize what a tiny thing it is. I love the
pics from LeMans 1970 of a 917 passing the Sonauto 914-6 -- the 917's
roof just about makes it to the top of the 914's fender. Speaking of
which, if anyone ever does a decent LeMans sim, I'd pay good $US for a
carset of 917s, 512s, Matra 670s, Alfa T33s, Ferrari P4s -- of course,
the track would have to be configurable for late '60s/early '70s layout,
with the full, chicane-less Les Hunaudires (aka Mulsanne Straight) and
the un-"improved" Maison Blanche, Indianapolis, and Tertre Rouge.
Ah well...
Next I'll find out that Schwarzenegger is 4' 11"....
BB
Well at least i know now that i won't be wasting an evening at the cinema
instead of racing GPL:-)

Most of these cars have already been made for SCGT, you can pick them
up as GPLEA, speedsims.com, and simracing.com and a couple of other
places I can't think of off hand. Also, someone is currently making Le
Mans for SCGT, I don't think its the 70s verison, probably a modern
version, better then not having it at all. :)
Take care
