Is Eau Rouge taken flat in modern F1?

David G Fisher argued that GP3 critics were wrong to call flat-out Eau Rouge unrealistic, since TV commentators said drivers did it. Others cited Martin Brundle saying he had never seen a truly flat trace, Jenson Button saying he had not tried, and Jarno Trulli saying he managed it in qualifying. The consensus was that it depended on setup, fuel load and conditions.

And Jenson Button, who qualified 3rd, in the post qualifying conference said: "Eau Rouge is obviously great. I haven't tried to take it flat and I don't think I ever will. Well, maybe next year." Yeah, supposedly that's why every in car shot shot revealed a confidence lift. ;-) BTW: with reference to GP3... I think you got cause and effect mixed up there.<g> Jan. =--- David G Fisher wrote... > ...was unrealistic because it was possible to go through > Eau Rouge without lifting? > > According to the announcers, the F1 drivers do it all > the time.

Which announcers do you refer to? Murray Walker and Martin Brundle discussed it this weekend, and Brundle commented that Eau Rouge wasn't *quite* flat even for Jacques, though JV said in this week's Autosport that he'd have a go if it was dry in qualifying - which it wasn't. -- David. I think Sam Posey and David Hobbs (speedvision)said that, but with the context of only the very brave or something like that.... Does MIKA ever lift???? that Mclaren is one very good machine. dave henrie(it should be ORANGE tho...and the Ferrari should be RED not Orange) dh "David Buttery" <[email hidden]> wrote in > >

According to Martin Brundle, he's NEVER seen a trace where a drive has kept it flat all the way through! David G Fisher wrote:

However, the ideal setup for Spa (or for that matter, any circuit) is a compromise between downforce on the corners and drag on the straights. Most drivers set up so that Eau Rouge requires a small lift. They probably *could* drive through it flat even so, but the risk/reward ratio makes it unwise. - Michael
Quote from the post-qualifying press conference: J. Trulli: "... and I found it amazing to be going flat out through places like Eau Rouge and Blanchimont, corners which were difficult for me in the past. So I must say that I have enjoyed this qualifying very much." Freeburn. Source: http://www.itv-f1.com/
Yep this is what I saw yesterday. In all of the incar views every driver lifted slightly through Eau rouge, except for the Jordon (Trulli) in the dry. From what I remember the announcers saying, he was the only one to manage it. Of course it didn't help him win the race :-) -- [email hidden] "Freeburn" <alan.daly@NOSPAM!ntlworld.com> wrote in message news:8jrq5.4388$[email hidden]... > Quote from the post-qualifying press conference: > > J. Christ that must take some balls after the accident JV had there last year !!!!. > Which announcers do you refer to? This ahs been discussed at length in the GP3 forum on High Gear Here are some hard facts: In Qual spec, the well balanced cars (and braver drivers) can take it flat. Some lift slightly In heavy fuel load situations drivers lift. In light fuel load situations some may manage it flat but in race spec most lift. Easy to understand, it's fact...it IS possible for drivers to take Eau Rouge flat, I just doubt all 22 drivers would actually do it.

Of course it didn't help him win the race :-) Well now i really wanna know what you mean exactly by 'lifting' (sorry i am dutch). If you mean 'no full throttle' than i disagree. I now for sure that for example Jos Verstappen and J. Villeneuve do Eau rouge with full throttle. Its confirmed. Why the other engine sound, you will probably ask? Sometimes, i looks someone is lifting his pedal. Why ? Because there is all at once a little hill (has a big influence on very high speed), thats why you hear the soundfrequency is a bit different for a second. But thats no lifting, that has all to do with the car and the engine which are moving by external forces on such a high speed. Keep that in mind.. (i hope i explained this well with my poor English)
I've NEVER heard him say that, in fact he has said that several drivers HAVE taken it flat. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Gerry Aitken <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > According to Martin Brundle, he's NEVER seen a trace where a drive has > kept it flat all the way through!

Nope. That must have been your conclusion about my conclusion. Dave Ewing -- ***************************************************** David A. Ewing Xilinx Boulder [email hidden] *****************************************************

Ofcourse the cameraposition above the helmet, as Greg describes, cant give any information about lifting or not... Very difficult to hear if someone is lifting, or the engine sound is a little different by a second because the *car* is lifted by highspeed (and a little hill all at once)
I've just watched a video of Sunday's race and MB say, "Well Murrey, I don't think I've ever seen a trace where it can be said that anyone has truley been flat all the way through there". So up yours Ian :0) Ian P wrote:

MB doesn't have access to the kind of traces he would when he drove F1, If you taped it then why not take a look at the Steve Marchett(?) interview during the 'Inside Track' segment, where SM goes into detail about which drivers have/have not successfully taken it flat. BTW, 'Taken It Flat' is a very generalised term, dependant on many factors such as, car setup, driver ability & confidence and more. Freeburn. Gerry Aitken wrote:

True. I like to take the Masta Kink flat. But only after I've lifted before it! Martin Long Live Nigel Mansell!

For Fox sports guys in the US said that the jordon was the only one to make it through Eau rouge flat out. What I saw from the incar cameras was that the real drivers lifted in Eau Rouge at the same spot I was lifting in F1 2000. I don't buy your explaination in this instance. -- [email hidden] > Keep that in mind.. (i hope i explained this well with my poor English) > >

> I think you are being silly now. Dont call me silly now !! We have television in Europe too. In fact the channel who brings us all the news about F1, is specialized in F1. They even let us hear the real radio contact from Arrows during the race. They guys who are talking about the race, race themselves ! So why call me silly. They know for sure that for example Jos Verstappen takes it flat. They talk to him many many times. > You can *HEAR* it from the incar cam and the Fox Sports guys confirmed > it... Thats your conclusion. I think you have to investigate more about carsoundfrequencies (because, yes, you can HEAR a sounddifference for a sec, but the conclusion isnot automatically they are lifting at that point..) Ofcourse you dont have to believe me, but I also listen to experts. Anyway, you can have your opinion (i dont call you SILLY for that .... - ) )

So you saw the foot of the driver and the throttle pedal with that camara view. If you did, hmmm, yeah, then I should believe you, anyway I dont think you saw that...
