Gents, not having a USB port, I don't know the answer to this:
Is is possible for my brother, who has a P3 with all the trimmings to
somehow get both a wheel and another gamepad in for two player? He's using
two Gravis Grips at the mo, but he wants to get his son behind a wheel at
the earliest opportunity, but still wants to race against him. Any and all
advice welcome, I'll pass along to him.
If it isn't the USB/Gameport way, then how?

If your question is specifically related to USB connections, then ignore the
rest of this reply :)
I'm no expert, but the game port supports 4 axes, so a joystick y-cable will
allow you to hook up two 2-axis joysticks to one game port. This would
require that the pedals on the wheel unit have the brake and accelerator on
the same axis.

on same axis) connected thru a "Y" cable onto the gameport
will do. (of course you couldnt use more than two buttons
on each joystick (A and B), no hats or additional buttons)
