What members race in real life

A Venezuelan autocrosser asked what others raced. Replies included karts, moped endurance, truck racing, late models and drag racing; Tom Pabst listed an extensive SCCA and vintage career including a Lotus 49, prompting requests for a comparison with GPL. Side discussion covered a fun VROC race and which sims felt most realistic to real racers.

Wonder what you guys race (if you do) on real life. Myself race a 92GT Mustang on a local solo club(the only one of my country wich BTW Im the webmaster of the homepage), our races are similar that SCCA SOLO II but on race tracks with a little higher top speeds (110MPH on some places), the car has many road race mods. If you wish to take a look and hear the car go here: http://www.killersracing.com/fotoslito.htm lito Caracas, Venezuela webmaster of www.clubcopa.com home of solo racing and race schools in Venezuela. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping. Love karts, have many friends that compete nationally with 125 shifters, but couldnt find any with a seat wide enough, made some research and think that I may need a modified chassis. But Im skipping the case, Im waaay to heavy to be competitive. But hell if I could get one of those little demons at least for some laps. lito * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping. I'm sure your not, If your in England there must be Heavyweight classes if you feel your not 5ft 2in and about 7stone like most of the leaders:-) Its all for the fun of it too.... given, lots of the smaller guys find themselves towards the front but I know lots of big men who enjoy the sport. As for seats... look into a basic plastic seat, like on rentals... The expensive seats are a bit tight even to little nippers. Anyway, if you like the sport and have the time/money to give it a go, I'd really recommend it whether you'd be competitive or not.

Speak for yourself: http://users.pandora.be/jan..verschueren./GPLSS01.jpg This was the Cooper vs BRM grudgematch mentioned in the "What is LOL?" thread (3 BRM's vs 1 Cooper, ain't no such thing as a fair war <vwg>). On the 2nd lap I think Andre was knocked back by the game allowing one of the extra, non-homologated cars to reset at the hairpin when it shouldn't have. Peter and I swapped the lead of the BRM vs Cooper thing a couple of times while waiting for Simon to catch up. Eventually Peter built a lead and held it... On the last lap Simon dissapeared from my mirrors (we'd been pretty even so far) so I let up a little and duly saw a car reappear. As it got closer I realised it was Andre in the 3rd BRM and decided he deserved a chance at dashing for the line. Unfortunately I had geared my car poorly for the exit of Sanson (just 16 minutes to reacquaint myself with the track and find a setup) and this is where Andre got an advantage which he successfully carried 'till the end of the backstraight. I went as deep as I could into Scierie but had to give him the turn. No matter in the end as we raced for fun, not to prove a point (although the result may see Mr. Brown treating BRM drivers with a little more respect in future ;-)). Wait a minute, I have to defend myself here too a little bit: In 2 years GPL time, it was the first time I drove in a BRM. I only drive Lotus, and when I joined the race I didn't know it was a no-Lotus race. To my surprise the shifter was on the left side, then I realized that it was a no-Lotus race. I drove like sh*t, I think I crashed my car every lap :) Jan, next time, Lotus-only race :)) Andre

To be fair, VROC was giving me a lot of grief that night too (lost controller settings and long delays starting the game). > I drove like sh*t, I think I crashed my car every lap :) Some defence!!! -I make it sound like you had the one setback and battled your way to the front again with a spirited drive and you go and admit you crashed every lap..... unclear on the concept!! ;-)) > Jan, next time, Lotus-only race :)) I would like to race you on your terms, but I reserve the right to bring whatever car feels good to me on the night. You advance me on GPL Rank by the better part of half a minute, so there can be no question of our relative ability, no matter what happened or would have happened in that race. This is beauty of GPL Rank, competition is not based upon circumstance. Jan. =---

I'm sorry Andre... misinterpreted you. I thought you were the one being defensive. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to arrange to race again sometime so you can beat me properly, huh? ;-)) As for the BRM thing, excluding a marque on WinVROC can indeed lead to this fenomenon. I'm pretty sure in this case it wasn't Lotus though. Make it a habit to check whether the correct driver is selected in WinVROC and, if so, that the class and marque listboxes either display "default" or the correct class and car. I've been bitten quite a few times in this way and quitting GPL to change it is a pain, so it really pays off to check. Jan. =--- Andre Warringa wrote...

I have driven nascar sportsman (now defunct), top fuel dragsters, various doorcar dragcars, some gymkhana corvette races, and vintage racing at road atlanta in a cobra kitcar and a 50's american one-off custom roadracer. Of all the sims, SCGT is most realistic, followed by a rally game I cant remember at the moment, and (and I know this is going to get boo'd but..) Motorhead. Motorhead was off on velocity, but the "sensation'' of speed and car dynamics were pretty good. Although SCGT is good, it is WAY OFF at times. In a real racer, you drive 30% with the pedals and 70% with the wheel. Open wheel outlaws drive more than that with the throttle... SCGT will spin you out at the weirdest times, and it shows very strong favoritism to the Porsches. The Saleens are the worst modeled IMHO. That car is a bit topheavy yes, but not as much as they model it.. nor is it as sluggish. You stab the gas in a real 500hp mustang, and I guarantee its will move a lot faster than the scgt one... the GT1 cars are very well done, as are a few of the lower classes. It is the best though, period. GPL is tooo touchy in my opinion, but it is excellent, for the atmosphere and explaining that not all racecars were stuck to the ground with gumball tires and downforce out the ass. Jan
In SCGT you can't drive with the throttle. Adding in a little bit of throttle doesn't change how the car tracks on the exit of the turn. Weight transfer just doesn't seem to be modeled well. Sure GPL may be "touchy" but at least weight shifts when you put in throttle or brake and it rewards smoothness, like in real life.
