Shucks, I don't have an OpenGL card!
Todd Wasson
Ruud van Gaal releases an alpha of his Racer car sim
Ruud van Gaal released a very early Win32 build of his hobby car physics program, later known as Racer, needing OpenGL in a window. Testers reported crashes that turned out to require the separate source archive, compatibility with various cards, missing sound and an 11th-gear bug, and encouraged him to continue.
Automated summary.
Hi all,
Thanks to all the help here, I'm getting forward with my car physics
simulation program. If you like, you can have a look at:
http://www.marketgraph.nl/gallery/racer/index.htm
It still is very alpha alpha alpha ofcourse, but it does something.
You'll need Win32 and a 3D card that does OpenGL in a window.
I hope it works a bit on some systems; I myself use a Voodoo Banshee
with the 1.02.02 beta drivers on Win2000. I develop on an SGI O2
though.
Oh, before I forget, use the mouse for now to steer and push throttle
etc.
Thanks,
Ruud van Gaal, GPL Rank +53.53

Whoops! (Insert sound of hand slapping forehead).
Sorry Ruud - I did indeed miss the fact that you needed to download the
source as well.......Having done so, it all works fine. Sorry if I wasted
your time on a spurious bug-hunt.

Crashes out on the machine I tried it on....a k6-2 300 with Elsa Victory
Erazor (Riva 128 chip) card, 128MB, Win95 OSR2, DX7a etc. The machine has
no sound card (it's an old & basic workhorse) .
If you're interested, the error message was as follows:

I got exactly the error Ian describes (even down to the same
addresses) until I downloaded the source archive and unzipped
it to the same directory as the exe. It does say you need
to do this on the web page if you read carefully!

Before you buy.
Very nice Ruud,
Maybe RAS will get around to coding it's own sim someday.

It's very hard to make any kind of judgement at this extremely early point,
but I think it shows definite promise :) Your driving model is already way
better than Need For Speed:High Pants or whatever it was called.
(works fine on a GeForce 2 btw)

Nice job Ruud, keep working on it, maybe we'll see GPL2 someday after
all...

Works perfectly on a V3/3000 in Windows ME.
You're a talented guy, Ruud. Keep up the great work! (nice art, too)

Ouch! :)
Try the software driver. The more software, the better it *should* do
windowed OpenGL. I've used a laptop here a month ago which did OpenGL
nicely (with the same code I use in Racer), although it was a 2D card.
Windowed.
And try www.glsetup.com perhaps, although that's probably 3D-card
only. But if you can run the WinNT OpenGL screensavers, I'd say it
should be possible.
I have a V2 lying around, I'll tuck it into my home system (P-133,
64Mb) and perhaps get it working using ChangeDisplaySettings(). But
it's not exactly my first priority. Besides, that computer is 10 kms
away from here, and I can't compile on it.
Oh, btw, the timing of the alpha is a bit whacky; it's fixed (in
debug.ini) at 0.01s per rendered frame (so it's intentionally slomo).
Halfway between integrating internally and rendering at each
integration step.
If you comment out the line timing.fixed_timespan, it will use
realtime, but since time steps are currently too large then (a
timestep=the time between rendered frames), instability of all the
forces occurs and a stillstanding car jiggles a lot.
Ok, slipvector time tonight. ;)

Hm, my first try at interpreting this number in MSVC++. The address is
somewhere in my QVector3 class, at "double GetX() const { return x; }"
fld qword ptr [eax]
qword is probably a double pointer, fld = floating point load (I
guess). So probably a dangling pointer to a vector (eax=0xcdcdce55,
doesn't LOOK like a ptr) of which I'm trying to get the X coordinate.
Strange though, since I only use vector *pointers* in the camera
routines (press 1-4 for some camera angles).
Might be some memory overwriting thing. I'll keep it in mind, but
don't see an obvious bug sofar. Thanks for reporting though. Retry
again at a later time, so your memory is a bit shuffled. ;-) (no
really, this makes a difference)
I happen to have a Win95 OSR2 on my system (multiboot). I'll try the
exe tonight on that OS, see what it does here.
It didn't before today, now it does. :)

I believe it does OpenGL in a window, but not Glide.

Awesome stuff here! I've wanted to work on something like this myself for some
time, but, alas, I doesn't have the skillz. Glad to know someone is taking the
initiative to build something that's somewhat open and such.

That's correct. Haven't implemented sound on Win32 yet (need to dive
into DirectAudio someday). The SGI version does have sound though,
although I didn't supply a .wav file (I use a probably copyrighted
ferrari.wav sample currently). But it's prematurely, just engine
sound, no skids or nice stuff until it gets to the top of things to
do.

You have to be very, very patient. Try http://www.hoad.org but that just points you
to the Xoom link. It will work.

Ah wow, hehe. I didn't compile the debug version (which asserts gears
above #gears out) indeed on Win32 and was lazy implementing a limit
where I handle the gear keys. Will change that. :)
