Repeated questions and the need for a RAS FAQ

A GPL newcomer asked why his car rolled away at idle and was told to select neutral, prompting complaints that the same questions recur. Barton Brown proposed a community FAQ; Michael Carver, who had maintained one, said it was much work and little read, and the two exchanged insults.

I'd *almost* volunteer to do it, but I wouldn't have a CLUE how... I think Michael Carver used to post FAQs fairly regularly... I believe that's what caused DC to hit the wall some years ago when entering the pit lane at Adelaide in his Williams. No, you want to know what's really stupid, run out of fuel and just hear the volume of the engine go down. Well, people *are* that forgetful, but also there are new people in here week after week, and people who return after long absences. What would be great is if some of the truly knowledgeable in here could put a few FAQs together, and point people to them. While I know it would be impossible to get people to agree on certain technical matters, there are some things (latest patches, versions, setups, tracks, carsets, etc., with appropriate links, for all the major PC racing sims) that would be of immense help, along with archived discussions of the pros and cons of various boards, chips, controllers, modifications, peripherals... Also, a page of links to all the racing sim sites, commercial and personal. I don't know who in here would be interested in doing it (I would, if I knew anything, but I don't), but what a great resource it would be! BB

Either put it in neutral or hold the gear changer in (don't let go of it). The latter only applies if you have "use gear change" in controls/advanced/clutch enabled. Johan N [email hidden]

Even in neutral the RPM are considerably higher than when the engine was first started, as if the throttle is stuck. G-Loc "rik anthrax" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%I_q5.21804$[email hidden]...

There is a FAQ I believe at www.faqs.org (surprisingly!) for RAS. I do think it is a bit out of date though. There is also Deja.com which has an archive of Usenet going back to..........well a long time ago. Problem with Deja is that you have to trawl through a hell of alot of posts before you find what you are looking for. This can be very frustrating when doing a search for a topic because quite often the thread will go off topic after the second post and there will be a hundred irrelevent postings under that heading. IMO I don't think Deja has a very user friendly interface either. Maybe a site of FAQ's for the various sims mentioned here would be a good idea, it would have to be constantly updated though. On the other hand is it really that terrible that some questions get asked over again? I think it's something we can all live with at it's present levels. I noticed something similar, but I feel it is programed in.  If the car is put into gear it rolls.  Natural or it would stall.  Possibly because of the high revving engines, the car continues to accelerate slightly? Or.  I'm full of it and it's another bug. What it sounds like you want is a tutorial on how to use the Internet. How to use a search engine (which search engine is the best and how to get the results you want). Here are my current top favorite search engines: http://www.google.com http://www.fast-search.com For past discussions here in r.a.s. use: http://www.deja.com/usenet (one can do an power search and limit it to r.a.s.). For some time I did post an introductory FAQ to r.a.s. and no one read it (except to use it to "educate" those that posted binaries to the group <G>). I also posted Alison's GPL FAQ on a regular basis (along with F1RS's FAQ but was told not to so they could get web hits instead). Didn't seem to help keep the FAQ from being asked.... While I think it maybe needed to repost the introductory FAQ on a regular basis, taking on the chore of an all encompassing FAQ that you outline would be a 24-hour-a-day 7-days-a-week task. And sorta redundant since most of the answers could be found by using a decent search engine or deja news. Oh, and I won't even mention the anti-spam mail I got deluged with for the posting the FAQ <G> % I don't know who in here would be interested in doing it (I would, if I % knew anything, but I don't), but what a great resource it would be! % BB -- **************************** Michael E. This may be difficult to accept, but you're not the only certified web genius who actually knows how to use search engines ("DogPile"is my current primary). And if I was so bereft of intelligence that I needed a " tutorial on how to use the Internet", I'm afraid *your* name wouldn't even appear in the top 1.6 billion of my short list of "who ya gonna call". I'm sorry your Herculean efforts at creating and maintaining a FAQ for this NG didn't garner you the fame, stardom, and personal satisfaction you no doubt deserve -- that does *not* however make such an enterprise less useful to those who actually might benefit from it in a more practical way. Let me give you the example of rec.models.scale, the newsgroup for scale model builders: This NG serves model builders from every genre; aircraft, armor, space, vehicles, figures, etc., and the multitudinous disciplines necessary for the hobby: painting, scale research, what adhesive for what material, paint stripping, resin casting, making photoetched metal parts, weathering, diorama construction... The NG produces, archives, and updates literally scores of FAQs. They post a URL to those FAQs every single day, and one of the most oft-repeated messages seen every day in rms is "There's a FAQ for that; here's the URL). Believe me, rms generates far more FAQs than I proposed for ras -- which makes sense: it's a far bigger ng, with a more diverse culture. And BTW, one of the most-used FAQs is a *LINKS* page, which has hotlinks to many commercial and personal modeling sites -- you know, like the "racing sim sites" links page you thought was so moronic. Arguments about which sim/board/chip/steering wheel/etc. are largely matters of opinion. There are, however, scores of questions asked in here that are quite straightforward, and could be easily answered in a FAQ, without you flicking the snot off your nose at the "clueless" questioner and directing them to a search engine. If you're too lazy or stupid to do it, as I am, then at least have the huevos to say so, instead of wrapping yourself in this saran-wrap "Webbier Than Though" toga and shooing away the great unwashed in the direction of a search engine. What a pompous ass. BB

Wow, why jump on Michael? He basically said it was a LOT of work, nobody read the thing, and (most of)the info is available with a web search. Was that so horrible of a thing to say? I've never maintained a FAQ. But, with the tons of different questions that get asked here, I can only IMAGINE the workload to keep it current. I'm not sure ANYONE would have time to do it...
