Hmm... just did some tests on fuel consumption and
it doesnt seem to depend on your driving style :(
There was almost no difference...
driving in high gear, just a bit throttle/brakes (rolling around)
vs. pushing hard, low gears - high revvs, hard braking (record laps).
I always got very similar distances with same amount of fuel...
(identical car and track, of course)
Is it just me?
Is this a known 'issue'?
Is there a way to reduce fuel consumption when necessary?
(example: fuel will last 4.5 laps but 5 to go...)

I presume you are referring to the fact that the AI's seem to be able to go
an extra couple of laps before they need to fuel up? I've also noticed this
and it can be quite inconveniant if you have to make an extra stop neat the
end of a race.

I remembered this. But I always assumed it was because the car I
was driving was the Mclaren prototype... Was this a basic problem
with the game? I remember getting around this by setting the race
time for 20 minutes or something. This would ensure that everyone
did at least one pit stop.

Hmm... I guess, the fuel consumption of the AI depends on the
type of the car and the upgrades they use (do they use upgrades?) ...
It's ok for me to need more stops compared to the AI when I
use the top level turbo charger :) ( not tested whether
this makes any difference...)
But I simply cannot reduce the amount of fuel the car needs
for a given distance by changing my driving style in SCGT.
In GPL, I can put 1 gallon into my Lotus and do 2 fast laps at
silverstone (the 2nd lap with major fuel problems)
until the engine completly stops. Or I can do 4 laps with the
same one gallon by using 5th gear, just a bit throttle at
the beginning of the straight parts, almost no brakes
(giving lap times somewhere around 2 minutes).

gives me just enough time to pass whichever AI I'm racing with.

That is what the AI do in my races. I race a 60 minute race, and I fill up
with
a full fuel load every 15 mins. I am running GT-1 (using the SP with TranAm),
and there are a couple of cars that always seem to win the races, and they
always seem to pit after about 5 mins. I get the lead at that point, but then
I
usually screw up and get passed by them.
I have used short shifting, and reduced speed on the straights, to extend fuel
range at Sebring and one the race when everyone else pitted on the last lap.
I was able to go an extra lap or two if I drove easy on the gas.
Is there a way to make the AI drive faster/slower at specific tracks? I can't
keep up at Hockenhiem(sp ?), but at the fantasy Chattham(sp ?) track, I lap
the field numerous times. The AI always seem to go really slow on the "oval"
section of tracks. I got the Dessert Speedway Oval track, but the AI go to
slow to call it a race.
