Flame warRequest for warez sites provokes piracy row

Tony Gaylord openly asked where to download pirated software, drawing mockery and arguments about the morality of piracy. Barton Brown reported some posters to their ISPs, and one claimed to receive a complaint letter. The thread later drifted into members sharing their own band recordings.

URL? Forget it. If I was a software publisher, I would have teamed up with the porn industry. I'd get the porn industry to produce fake links to warez. The more fake links, the better. If someone has a true warez url, it will be drowned by tha fake porn warez url's. Download a demo. Yoy might even consider buying the game. By doing that you avoid doing hundreds of mouse clicks (closing the popups) and a huge phone bill (assuming you use a dial-up connection). As an extra bonus, by buying the game, you'll get a clean concience. Jon Andersen

More about moral: what is the essence of stealing: is it that one takes something he has not payed for (such as downloading warez or sneaking into the football-stadium by climbing over the fence) or is the essence of stealing that the person you take it from doesn't have it antymore (like if someone steals my bike). grtngs, hgrm > -- > J.H.

The anon email is to prevent spammers sending me email that I won't want. It's pretty common to replace your email address with 'nospam' when posting to a newsgroup. You may not be familiar with it. Your 'courageous' stance is just a thinly disguised attempt to flame someone else and show everyone how 'right on' you are when it comes to software piracy. Theft is theft? You think that software piracy is a simple as that do you? You obviously have a very naive view of the world and I suggest you do some research. Perhaps you might start with investigating the software companies who release untested software, make you pay through the nose for unfinished code and then expect you to beta test it all for them for free - occasionally fobbing you off with a 'patch'. This issue is not black and white, so get down off your soapbox and open your eyes. On Sat, 02 Sep 2000 21:22:28 GMT, Barton Brown <[email hidden]> wrote:

Sorry, chaps, but I feel like the outsider on a rather in joke: I did not send 5 posts, and headers are just, well, headers. You may feel that my original observation that D/Ling 'warez' is a common source of software like back orifice being misused was not very profound, but ..? Or are you saying that running back orifice on my own machines is so risky that it makes me 'clueless'? If so I'd really like to know: have you any experience? Like you I am basically a linux user: I find it very annoying that when a MS windows app hangs (again) I cannot just log on from somewhere else and kill it: back orifice appears to offer this. My idea is to play with it a bit on one of my machines while using linux to monitor my net to see if it looks dangerous. Sorry this is so off topic: I do think though that if you think I am committing hari kari through cluelessness it would be nicer to point it out directly rather that just exchanging knowing winks with each other. Dear Mr Brown, I have just received a letter from my shell provider saying that complaints have been made about me, specifically regarding posting about illegal activity with back orifice. Are you by any chance the sort of yellow bellied low life that would stoop to such a thing? Do you perhaps have difficulty reading English? Or comprehending it when you have read it? Are you capable of recalling an old post using you client and reading my posts again? Are you such a half-wit that you think that my running back orifice on my own PC puts anyone at risk except myself? It seems that the violence of your opinions about software piracy (with which, ironically, I for the most part agree) do indeed indicate an unstable and personality. The one I enjoy best is 36-24-36 for it's Frehley-esque guitar scalings. The other one is Defreeze Walt Disney. Thanks for the reply, Chuck! It was a pointless thread and I should never have got involved! Just for clarification: I jumped in at that point and it was my first post on the subject, so that was why I was a bit bemused. Particularly since I thought the inference of my point was pretty obvious, ie anyone who touches this 'warez' stuff with a forty foot pole is taking a big risk with trojans. (Don't rely on your virus scanner either: back orifice can be customed to death to make it very difficult to detect.) This info is easily findable on security sites. Why he thought he had 'got me' still baffles me! He has now written again to my ISP claiming that I publically support software piracy: a downright defamatory lie, as I have never made any post on the subject. (btw, just for the record, I do not!) >Well, if you ever dump 'doze for good, you'll get good use from telnet & >rlogin. For actual work I have used nothing but linux for about 10 years. That's why the missing features bug me so much. It also makes the piracy thing a non-issue: the 'expensive' apps are mostly GPLd, any why anyone would spend a lot of time and call charges to locate and download dodgy game software (without a manual) just to save 30 quid completely baffles me!
