Just in case this helps anyone else....
Before:
Monza PB 1:29.30
Mosport PB 1:25.98
The car is difficult to control: unpredictable. The Monza lap time is
on the ragged edge, and the Mosport time is just a lap where
everything randomly went almost right most of the time. Mosport
itself is just one track where I feel completely lost, and laps are
completed seemingly randomly. Very difficult to control the rear-end
on entry to and on powering out of corners. Control in long corners
difficult. Beginning to think the FF implementation is not too hot
(well, it can't be my fault, surely)?
After:
Monza PB 1:29.18; Mosport 1:24.59 (!)
The car is fairly easy to control (for difficult values of easy),
because it is now predictable. I think the Monza lap time can be
improved, whereas the previous PB was nearly as good as it gets. The
Mosport can most definitely be improved. GPL is once again a shining
star in the heavens <g>.
How:
force_feedback_latency = 0.0000 ; was 0.085
Well, dang me! I decided to fiddle with the FF settings because of
the problems I percieved, and this was the first thing I tried.
Bingo!
Is this a known effect? If it is I must have missed the relevant
threads. I found car control when sliding very tricky, often getting
the back round on entry to corners, and again when powering out of
them, all for no apparent reason. In long corners, the FF didn't seem
to be making sense, and I'd wander about all over the track. I was
beginning to despair of ever getting my lap times down.
Now, the FF makes sense. I still spin, of course, but much, much less
frequently, and part of that is because all my old braking and turn-in
points can be discarded and I haven't quite learnt the new ones yet.
The massive improvement at Mosport is after 4 or 5 laps re-learning
the track for the new "feel", and then three straight laps without
spinning (a 1st for me there). For the first time I feel I have some
control of what's happening at Mosport. I'd never really learnt the
track at all before, apart from where the run off areas^W^W^W corners
are.
And, as a bonus, the car is much more stable under braking.
OK, so now for the big test - off to the Ring!

Absolutely Peter, FF helps me quite a lot. A friend of mine has a
non-ff wheel, and it's much harder to drive on the edge, with ff you
can feel when the car is about to lose it.
I played around a lot lately with the settings for my LWFF, and a week
or so ago someone here at RAS posted his settings, which work
perfectly for me:
force_feedback_damping = 20.000000
force_feedback_latency = .175000
max_steering_torque = 100.000000
These settings are as said for the lwff, and may not work for
everyone, it seems that different versions of the LWFF require
different settings.

Yup...I've had a 0.0000 latency set for my LWFF for a while now. FF is very
smooth, the effects are well defined and it did away with those annoying
spikes.

Oh, bugger, it seems that my post was a tad confusing, so here's a
clarification....

And this with latency 0.000

Congratulations on discovering something that works for you!
Unless I missed it, you don't mention which wheel you're using, though. Don
and Andre both responded with their experience with LWFF. What's yours?

Now I remember, that was you indeed, thank you for posting them!
The ff is fantastic with these settings, I do get the spikes at Monza,
but as some guys told me, it's normal having spikes with asymetric
setups. After driving a while with these settings I just got used to
the spikes, the ff in the corners more than makes up for it!
Yesterday I had a long race at Rouen, 30 laps or so, and boy my arms
were tired after that, felt like I had a real race :)

That's strange. I can't stand it with 0 latency. I get those driver
induced oscillations- the car fishtails all over the track. I've got
force_feedback_latency = 0.100000.

I do have a reasonably fast system, but no USB, I'm using the joystick
ports. The change amazed me. This may be worth fiddling with a bit
more, but at the moment I'm very happy with it.
The only trouble is, after every corner which I negotiate with extra
speed now, I mess up the next one because I've never approached it so
fast before. So, it's re-learn the tracks time!
