I've just read on http://www.richeymanic.co.uk/ about a new F1 sim that
supposedly uses the GPL Engine. If this is right, it can only mean either
Papy are doing F1, or they're going to start leasing their engine, both of
which would be great news. There also a 2 MB video showing a stationary F1
car rotating, and it looks like about the 1990 season to me from the shape
of the car.
Hope it's for real.
Hoax video of a GPL-engine Formula One sim
Simon Brown linked a video on a fan site purporting to show a new F1 sim using the GPL engine. Posters dissected the rendered car, noting it mixed early-1990s chassis features with 2000 sponsor liveries, and concluded it was a fake. Papyrus's Eric Busch was quoted from the Sierra forums distancing the company from the images, confirming the hoax.
Automated summary.
For anyone who can't be bothered downloading the video and the avi decoder
i've posted a screenshot from the movie at
http://www.sbdev.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/f1.jpg
Maybe someone knows what year this is?

WOW. Downloading the Mpeg right now. This is definitely BIG NEWS! So now
we know what Papy will be doing after N4. You gotta wonder how much (if not
all of) N4 is already done...
Great find Simon :)

I went through the www.ferrari.it site, and the car most resembling this
one is the '91 F1 Ferrari, named (what else) F1-91:
http://www.ferrari.it/comsport/formula1.e/images/f191.jpg
-Gregor
To me it looks like a definite fake. The color scheme is of a modern
Ferrari and the model doesn't resemble a real Ferrari completely. It looks a
bit like the Ferrari that Alain Prost used to drive, but I haven't seen a
front wing like that on any Ferrari. The front bit looks more like a
Champcar.

Another thing though, is that in the Hiigh Gear interview with Mr
Kraemmer (sp?) from papy, he did say they had a high downforce car
running with the GPL engine....

The site that posted this video says they hope to have a video featuring the
car and a track as well later this month.

Here's another shot of the 91 Ferrari, and the shape looks pretty close to
the one in the video, although there's a few differences. The link is-

Fake, anytime... Why would we have the `91 car shape with the `99 sponsors?
It just does not make sense... I haven't seen the video (only the picture),
but it seems to me that someone had some fun with 3DS max, and obviously
didn't get much documentation...

It's just a 3d rendered object. Quite easy to do if somebody has artistic
talents, patience and has good knowledge of how to use 3d modeling software.
I mean cmon anybody who think that rendered F1 car is from a real sim has
some eye problem. We all know that modern video cards can't correctly model
curved polygon surfaces (Quake3 hint! hint!).

No one was claiming it was in-game footage using a 3d engine, it's very
obviously rendered (real-time reflections etc). That doesn't mean anything
in itself though, it could have been a video Papy made showing the cars, to
sell the idea to Sierra. I don't believe that by the way, I'm just pointing
out the logic.
Given what i've read in the whole thread, I think it's probably a wind-up as
well.

Looks like a '93 Lotus with a ferrari paint job to me. Front wing, rear
wing rear engine cowling and air intake are all identical to the Lotus
although it has pre'92 wheels.

Hardly any doubt about that... Like someone else said why are there
2000 sponsor livery on a 89-91 car? A Shell logo? Come on, back then Ferrari
still used AGIP... The Marlboro writing on the nose wasn't done that way
until '97, before that Marlboro mainly sponsored McLaren...

Actually, the lines of the car seem much more like the F 92 - the airbox,
nose, and cockpit opening aren't straight enough for the F1-91, which was a
more angular car.
Much as I'd love to see this game happen (mind you, I'd *prefer* '91, as
that's my personal "pinnacle of F1" year), I'm inclined to agree that we
need to see a LOT more info before we treat this as anything more than a
hoax.

I really can't comment on future product plans either real or figments of
someone's imagination, but those screenshots and movie are not from a Papy
project and whomever is developing it (assuming it's anything more than a

It would have been one hell of a game though, GPL physics, 91 season (cheap
license etc), maybe Papy should think about it.

It looks like a generic car to me,
It can't be anything but the J191 IMO if it is an actual real car. Ifit's
generic its strongly based on 1990-94 cars.
I don't think this means a lot though, the movie. I mean, its just a 3d
still-life, of an old car with an out of place skin.
Enough work from any free 3D program and you can produce somethnig to this
effect. (and people have)
Given how this is put together I'm not expecing a sim to pop up any time
soon out of this.
