...but what is it?
From a current thread, it is a method of getting software for free. My
understanding of piracy is the sale of cd copies of (cracked) software for a
fraction of the retail price; many outlets in Asian cities.
Is this the same as Warez?
Tony
Warez is a term for sights that crack code in software, post full versions
of the software, and encourage others to download these full versions that
they make available to them. It is illegal, and one reason the are so hard
to manipulate and find as others have stated. The sole intent is to post
software so people can get it illegally without paying for it.

Have to ask, we (The Pits) don't think software piracy is wrong ?

Thanks, Unc, just what I was looking for. This is standard TOS
boilerplate for every ISP. If you Warez Dewdz don't think your ISP knows
what you do, where you go, and what you DL from the Net, your are sadly
mistaken. When I was with the newspaper, I was in IT, and the intranet
and firewall was in our keeping. We could see who was connecting to the
Internet, and where. We could generate VERY detailed reports. Your ISP
does this all day, every day, and the data is archived. If someone was
to become suspicious that a user was DLing Warez, a simple log search
would kick out the evidence. Many, many "kiddie-porn" investigations
have started this way, and software piracy is about number 2 on the list
of things the Fed and the ISPs are cracking down on.
Obviously the people who use Warez have no moral compunctions or
reservations about their illegal activities -- maybe the thought of
keeping their tender young behinds out of the cold grip of the FBI, or
Big Leon in the County Slammer, will give them pause. Except they'll
whine and cry all the way to court that "*I* didn't do anything wrong!"
I'll be really interested to see how that "Software's too expensive"
defense goes down with the judge and prosecuting attorney. Please,
Dewdz, keep us posted -- I hear some forward-thinking correctional
facilities have email...

Bzzzzzttt! Wrong! All they need is proof of transmission (the DL record)
and proof of storage. The proof of transmission (available from your
ISPs records) provides probable cause for a search and siezure of your
PC and any and all storage media. My suggestion? Get a REAL BIG magnet.
If you think we're wrong, then by all means ask your ISP for a
clarification of their TOS -- I know they'd be more than happy to show
you the way to truth. And forget the MP3/Napster issue -- until a judge
rules comprehensively and all appeals are exhausted, the law is unclear.
The law, however, is most assuredly clear regarding copyright and
intellectual property issues.

Since, so far, I seem to be the one here using the "Theft is theft"
coda, why don't you drop the sidestepping niceties and accuse me
outright of being a "hardcore Napster freak"? Even as loose and clueless
an organization as AOL frowns on unfounded slander, and I can assure you
that I have no interest in nor time for Napster, Macster, MP3 Rage,
Audion, or any of the gazillion other means for pirating music off the
Net. My ISP can support that statement.
Do you think I would be vehemently opposed to one sort of theft, and not
another? Sorry, I don't have your "adaptable" morals

Funny, Todd -- I missed the announcement making you majordomo of this
UNmoderated newsgroup. Please refer me to the pertinent message, so I
may offer my obeisance and fealty to the NEW god of RAS. What's this,
about a dozen people in the last 5 years to claim control of RAS?
Got a killfile? I bet you do. Use it.

Come ON, Goy! You know that Becktell and his piracy apologists know
better than YOU do what The Pits thinks! They are, after all, among that
elite group first noted here on RAS many years ago: "Super Geniuses".
I'm lovin' this more the deeper these goofs sink their boots in it!

I guess I better call my lawyer to protect me from my "slanderous" newsgroup
postings. At least these warezz threads are more fun to read than the 8 billion
GPL threads...

If you can afford a lawyer, you ought to be able to pay for software, huh?

Well, Stuart has clarified his statement to me in private e-mail, but
what he's referring to is this, back when Jed originally started "The
Pits", it was to distribute his crack for the ICR2 demo that enabled
certain features in the demo that was "locked", he, or someone else, I
can't really remember, did the same for the N2 demo at a later date
First of all I happen to think that this is a fairly big stretch to say
that because we at some point cracked a few demo's we're not against
software piracy, when in fact, we, as an organization, I can't speak for
the individual members, are very much against it both in thoughts and
actions
What we create and distribute on our web site is there for anyone to
see, it's not like we're some small time operation hiding from the
public and corporate eye, and if any company, or private individual,
feels that we're screwing them, all they have to do is say so, and it
has happened on a couple of occasions, the old timers in here will
remember the Daytona debacle a few years ago, and also the release of
the readily converted Watkins Glen from GPL that was included in the
TPTCC99 patch
On both of these occasions The Pits" did what we were asked to do, and
will do so at any time there's a complaint against what we're doing, a
complaint that has either a legal or moral leg to stand on that is
Those 2 cracks that Stuart was referring to were well known to Papyrus,
they would have been blind not to see them as that was one of the reason
Jed set it up in the first place, to distribute that crack ,and not only
did they not take any action against them, they even asked "The Pits" to
help distribute the "Hawaii" software back then
I'm no lawyer, and as far as I know, "The Pits" don't have any lawyers
either within the crew or on retainer :-), but I bet Papy/Sierra does,
and did back then as well, if they didn't like it, they would have taken
actions, just like what happened with the Daytona project where lawyers
where brought in to stop the work
> I'm lovin' this more the deeper these goofs sink their boots in it!
Well, Stuart are certainly entitled to his opinion on the matter, and
I'm probably blowing this out of proportion anyway, but I'd rather
people didn't use "The Pits" as a moral conscience to back up a
statement about warez not being such a bad thing after all
