Driving the championchip as an privateer this season. Got kicked out of the
Ferrari team after a so-so 1966. Nobody wanted me but I had the luck and
opputunity to buy me an Eagle (we filthy rich amateurs with filthy rich
fathers can do such things). So now I have the pleasure to drive in circles
around my country fellowman Jo Bonnier in his Cooper.
He has however done something I never have done, take the victory in the
Netherlands.
Ive started this season with a 4th at Kyalami, then, as always, disaster in
Monaco and were now up to Zaandvoort. Its here my tire-troubles makes me
wonder.
Ive found this marvellous, but a little bit twitchy, set up with which Im
certain to take a position in the front row. But...
its a good setup only when the tire temparatures are up, which means at
least two laps. On cold tires its a hell to drive and I will be down in the
second half of the field before me and the Eagle are ready to race. Im not
a good overtaker so I see three possibilities.
1 Be a good sport and take it as it is and hope for some easy overtaking
2 Change setup for the race and hope for some points
3 Go for the lead and block as much as I can till tire temps let me leave
the field (some of the other drivers call this to do a "Schumy", they say
its named after a german driver to be seen sometimes in the future). This
strategy is of course no good if Surtees is somewhere close behind.
I think I will not go for the 3rd alternative, the others probably leave me
out of the after-race-party.

Make sure you walk your talk, else the maneuver will be a "DC". ;-)

There is a difference between blocking and holding a defensive line. Drive
defensively all you want, it's ok.
