I haven't read ALL the posts in the thread below about the 'Modern-F1-sim-with-gpl-engine(HOAX)' but to my eye the car in that MPEG is the (beautiful) Jordan 191, painted in 2000 Ferrari colours. It just doesn't make sense! I have to agree with whoever it was who said 1991 was the pinnacle season of F1. Together with '90 you had some fine motoracing... overtaking, slick tyres, pre-qualifing! Not to mention Prost, Senna and Mansell! :o))
AND also... if it's created such a stir in so many people perhaps Papy/Sierra should take note. Not such a bad ploy by Richey :) Rob Swindells wrote:

A new sim with "Prost, Senna and Mansell!" alone would be GREAT in my opinion:-) Thanks, Aaron Markham *Kart44* --------------------------------------- Inaugural Talladega Tournament 2000 Champion #54 FSSRL Online Series www.fssrl.com #41 RTOS Online Series http://208.245.164.150/Racing-Thunder/index.shtml Weekly Competitor at www.ameliamotorraceway.com "Rob Swindells" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Rob..... I'm sure Papy is "taking note." They are probably ecstatic at the idea of selling maybe 300 or 400 copies of a "modern" F-1 simulation! That's the size of the current GPL online community. Tom Pabst PS: I'm not trying to be a smart ass at your expense, Rob. I just wanted to underscore a point! We (the sim racing community) need to "wake up" to the fact that we are *not* a "marketing force to be reckoned with!" As way too many "members" of this community seem to think. We either need to change something (find a way to influence the "gaming" community as to which racing sims are good .....which are not)....or get our own "universal" racing simulation and let the "talent" that exists in this community create tracks, cars, car physics, UI interface....all of it, as we want and need them to be. Wouldn't it be cool if we could do that? I'm afraid it might be too late....since the PC gaming industry is on it's last breath. (snip) I have to agree with whoever it was who said 1991 was the pinnacle season of F1. (unsnip) You ARE joking, aren't you, Rob? Or were you only born in the 1980's? The year 1991 wasn't the pinnacle season of ANYTHING, let alone F1!! :-) Rob Swindells wrote:

Why do you assume that the people outside our community have no interest in such title? It would sell quite well in Europe I'm sure, especially if done the correct way to give the less-serious virtual motorsport drivers the chance to be as fast with different aids and tools. Cost of the title :100$+. No need for distribution or production, it's sold exclusively online. No box, PDF manual. Interesting way to get around the problem of the mass market. > since the PC gaming industry is on it's last > breath There will always be people who want to do something else on their computer. On the opposite, I would say. Even if the console attracts 10x more people in 5years, the PC will also increase in numbers of people who want games. Maybe not 10x, but it will increase. And it will increase in niche markets also. The fact that GPL didn't sell well doesn't mean anything ofcourse. The reasons why it didn't sell are obvious and have been discussed often enough. >Tom Pabst <snip> >community create tracks, cars, car physics, UI interface....all of it, as we >want and need them to be. I should probably clarify, since I think Rob was referring to me in his post. For me, 1991 was the pinnacle of "Modern" F1 - that is, cars with wings, post-Cosworth DFV era. There were many great drivers, a few teams with the ability to win, interesting technical differences between cars (V8, V10, and V12 engines, semi-auto trannies on only two cars), and the cars still ran on slicks with a proper wide-track suspension. I'm only now *just* getting used to the look of the narrow cars. If Crammond would re-do GP1 with the GP3 (or GP4, assuming the game engine actually gets the needed changes) engine, I would positively swoon :) Not that I'd mind a mid-to-late 70's game, or something from around '83 or so, but we know they'd never happen - there just aren't enough people interested in historical sims. '91 might have a shot, though, because the names are so recognizeable still. I am of the same thought as you Rob, right down to which car it is...or at least i was! I did some research last night, it strongly resembles the J191 but it is actually more like the Lotus No.12 Johnny Herbert drove sponsored by Castrol...circa 93/94. Larger endplates, lowers more behind the driver.... less rear bodywork than the J191.... It must be the Lotus. It must be. I actually have both Tamiya models of the J191 and this Lotus and I've just been staring a them for hours.. It must be the Lotus... I can't be wrong...hehehe All in all though, the way it is presented is very strange... I still don't believe this is a sim in the making..... not until we get some better evidence then a well crafted Truespace movie.

Yes it was! it was the pinnacle of Irish football and beer sales! as we were all still too drunk to realise Italy sent us home the previous year :-)

Just saw a show about James Hunt in 1976. I was impressed how the '76 Mclaren resembled the Indy 500 machines of that time. The Mac that Hunt drove looked very similar to the Donahue/Revson Champ car. -- dave henrie Free the ICR2 source code!
