Marshal killed in first-lap crash at Monza 2000

Members reacted to the first-lap pile-up at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix, in which a fire marshal was struck by debris and died. They debated whether Monza's chicanes contributed and criticised TV coverage showing CPR; the thread was marred by a jibe about European hospitals that drew angry replies.

I know its off topic but I just saw the crash, but what made it much harder was the heli shot of the medics performing CPR, any official status yet?
sdgsdg <[email hidden]> wrote: > I know its off topic but I just saw the crash, but what made it much harder > was the heli shot of the medics performing CPR, any official status yet? It was claimed in the Finnish broadcast that the victim would have more likely been a track marshal hit by flying crash debris. BTW, before the race started the Finnish TV also showed some footage from the '67 Monza race! (It was the first video footage I've seen from that era after buying GPL.) +Cinquo

DeLa Rosa is fine. The person injured is a member of the Fire Fighting team. He is listed in critical condition with head & chest injuries sustatined from flying debris. Most unfortunate and what I hate most about motorsports. Sal V. Sad news I'm afraid...apparently the marshall died shortly after stabilizing. ::( The chicanes are inappropriate, but they cannot be blamed. This goes down to the terrible luck and danger that will always surround motorsport. Not surprising. I would not want to be in critical condition and have to use a hospital in Europe. Just terrible bad luck. Those chicanes might be inappropriate, but just imagine the weren't there. Jos Verstappen was doing 357 km/h just before the first chicane. If that chicane wasn't ther, they would approach Curva Grande at about 400 km/h.... grtngs, hgrm

It wasn't at that chicane, it was at the 2nd chicane which I think is not needed as there would shortly go into a 3rd (?) gear corner anyway, so there is not a need to slow the cars down before that corner. -- Steve Levett Flyer#10 on WON --------------------------------------------------------- Lets Go Flyers The European Racing League http://drive.to/erl Co-Founder of 502 Racing --------------------------------------------------------- "Han Monsees" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8pg806$jhb$[email hidden]... > > <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8pg5pr$fst$[email hidden]... > > Sad news I'm afraid...apparently the marshall died shortly after > > stabilizing. ::( The chicanes are inappropriate, but they cannot be > > blamed. It's the chicane after Curva Grande. Modern F1-cars can do CG flat out now, so if the chicane wasn't there, they would approach Lesmo at dangerously high speed. I think it's more dangerous to approach a semi-fast corner such as Lesmo at high speed than a slow corner. grtngs, hgrm

I noticed that camera shot as well, although the commentators (Murray Walker and Martin Brundle) seemed to miss it on our coverage. It was fairly obvious the poor marshall was in serious trouble. I don't think I'd like my last moments shown live on tv. The director should have cut away sooner. The 'general public' may watch F1 to see the crashes, but I hate those moments. So instead they approach the chicane at a dangerously high speed instead, it's a slower corner than Lesmos so they need a bigger braking area than Lesmos if the chicane wasn't there. I think the chicane caused a bottleneck which then caused the accident. In my mind if there was no chicane there would not of been an accident. -- Steve Levett Flyer#10 on WON --------------------------------------------------------- Lets Go Flyers The European Racing League http://drive.to/erl Co-Founder of 502 Racing --------------------------------------------------------- "Han Monsees" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:8pggft$bnt$[email hidden]... > > "Steve Levett" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:39bbb430$[email hidden]... > > It wasn't at that chicane, it was at the 2nd chicane which I think is not > > needed as there would shortly go into a 3rd (?) gear corner anyway, so > there > > is not a need to slow the cars down before that corner. > > It's the chicane after Curva Grande. Yeah, but drivers don't try deperate over-taking maneouvers into 4th gear corners, because there's only one line and no room. You wouldn't get a five car collision in lesmo 1, plus lesmo 1 has a big gravel trap. Whenever there's problems at Monza it's always in the braking zones to the chicanes, which ironically were brought in as a safety measure. Partially I agree with you, but OTOH, I think it's more dangerous to brake form 380 to 200 kph for Lesmo without a chicane than to brake form 280 to 100 kph before the chicane. grtngs, hgrm

I don't think it helped that the emergency vehicles had to park on the other side of the track, and on at least one occassion someone had to wait for the procession of cars to go through before they could cross the track... IMHO, the race should have been stopped immediately with an accident of that scale... ...and all this just after Ecclestone was on TV saying how pointless American racing is because the race only occurs in the last 10 laps - so what is the point of watching the cars going round behind a safety car for the first 12 laps, or having half the field removed on the first lap??? Whilst I'm at it, who else thinks they should do something about driver behaviour on re-starts from behind the safety car? The way Schumacher slowed dramatically today, you could see an accident coming... and if Button hadn't taken to the grass (at the cost of his own race :-( ), then there would have been a mass (albeit slow speed) pile-up... We can only guess at whether there would be crashes into lesmo 1 if there wasn't a chicane before it, but the drivers would be a lot more cautious and a corner like lesmo 1 only has one line. You see few crashes on the entry to 4th gear corners generally. Do you realistically expect Jensen to see what Schumacher is up to with all those cars in front of him? Unless you were "in possession of an insurance policy or big fat bank account" you wouldn't have been allowed in the ambulance/hospital in the first place. Tony Whitley (isn't this ever-so-slightly OT?)

Hehe, that's a great story :) Particularly if you read it with an Irish accent.

Well, they were sleeping or too enthusiastic (sp?), too! Did mr. E say that? LOL! I wonder if he's ever been paying attention to what actually happens during an F1 race... "I think F1 is pointless because the race is only on in the first 5 (OK, maybe that's too much, 2 then) laps." Thomas
Hi Simon At least he knows Italy is in Europe. I was watching the news on TV over in the US once, and they said it was snowing very heavily in England. When I got home the next day, it turned out it had snowed in Scotland only :-/. And of course there was the time Edward Kennedy, while on a fact finding mission to Ulster, walked up to a member of the Ulster Defence Regiment, who was manning a road block, and said, "Son, why don't you just go home?", to which the young soldier replied in a broad Northern Irish accent, "This is MY HOME, why don't YOU fuck off!". Oh, and of course the American travel writer, who - while driving to Scotland from England - stopped at a M-way service station and tried to change her English notes for Scottish ones :))). I cant understand that in a way though <G>. Simon Brown wrote:

Yeah, but it happens several times every race in CART. > They are able to handle that situation in CART after EVERY yellow > flag... > > -- > l8er > ronny

Like in Portland, what was it, 1 or 2 years ago? Coming out of the last turn getting ready for green, Montoya spins the car, catches it, and if I remember correctly, retains the lead? That was sooooooooo cooooooooool!
