Why Michael Schumacher broke down after Monza

Greg Cisko criticised Fox commentator Derek Bell's remark about Schumacher's tearful press conference, arguing the emotion came from equalling Ayrton Senna's win total. Others cited championship pressure, and a later report quoted Schumacher saying it was a mix of pressure and thinking of Senna. A side argument corrected those who thought Greg meant Senna died at Monza.

The following is an email I sent to [email hidden]. If anyone else feels the same please email them to voice your displeasure. I really cannot believe that Derek Bell would really think such a thing. We were able to get a response out of them a few races ago (sound in PC racing sims). If you feel the same disgust as I do about this, please email them to get a retraction. We did it once, we can do it again :-) -- [email hidden] ------------------------------- We are not idiots/morons so please do not treat us as such. Michael Schumacher most certainly did not breakdown during the live news conference because he was 20 points ahead 6 races ago and finally won one. He was emotional because of the memory of Ayrton Senna. He won the race in which Senna was killed (if you would please bother to check). He was very very subdued for much of that season. Now he get his 41st victory and is tied with Senna and you actually believe that he is emotional because of circumstances from this year? Please... I do hope that you make amends for your huge error in the next broadcast. Regards, Greg Cisko
I was thinking the same thing. Schumacher had just been asked how he felt about the race, to which he answered that it was indescribable (though obviously intense). They then stated that he had matched the win record of Senna, who had died in a race that Schumacher won (remember- that was one of his victory total) and they get a hugely emotional response. And they wonder if its because he broke his winless streak? C'mon! At least we didn't get any long helicopter shots of the marshal being attended to, which was broadcast on some other networks. If anyone should be apologized to, those networks should be apologizing to the family and friends of Paolo Ghislimberti. Yes I agree with you, I think he was emotional about the fact that h had tied Aryton Senna race wins. But I believe Senna was killed at Imola and not Monza...... Scott

Greg, I agree with you to a certain point about Michael being upset about Ayrton. However that was not the factor behind Michael's breakdown in the press confernence. He has had alot to deal with this year. These factors include; losing the lead of the championship after a huge lead, pressure on his driving style (eg. his sweve at the starts), Heavy critisim and being branded a 'cheater' and an arogant person by some members of the press. It was when all these factors combined with wining Ferrari's home Grand Prix, Monza, and the fact that he equaled Ayrton's record that he brokedown. So yes Ayrton's was a key part however it was not the only reason why he was reduced to tears in the interview. But Greg was probably thinking of Imola 1994 when Senna died and Scumacher won ( "He won the race in which Senna was killed..." ). Borut

Reread the post. The race in which Senna was killed was the 1994 Grand Prix of San Marino in Imola. That race was won by Michael Schumacher.

We don't know why he broke down. He wouldn't say. Maybe he was sad because Bobby Knight was fired. Maybe he is a Notre Dame football fan and was distraught about the loss to the #1 Huskers. I agree, it was definitely the mention of the fact that Michael now had the same number of wins as Senna that made him emotional. Senna was a hero for Michael and it brought back the memory of his death, it had nothing to do with this year championship or general pressure. I also read a report that the drivers were told of the marshalls death before they went into the press conference in case they were asked questions about it, but I don't know whether that report it true. Greg, Thats what I thought you meant originally too......you said that Schumacher had won the same race in which Senna was killed, but a few of us thought that you meant that he had won YESTERDAY at the same CIRCUIT (monza).... Do you guys remember Hakinen's sobbing in the bushes during last year's championship? At Monza wasn't it? Now, THAT was a breakdown. He had just made a huge mistake taking himself out of the race while he had the lead. That didn't keep him from winning the 1999 championship. Anyway I really don't see why you're making such a big deal out of this Greg. Who cares what Derek Bell said. It was just speculation. No one knows exactly why he broke down. That includes you and me, Derek, the whole world. Chances are even Schumacher would have a tough time explaining. On Mon, 11 Sep 2000 17:30:49 +1000, "Allan Harrison" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Boyos, if I was under that much pressure (the highest salary in F1 by a humongous margin) from Ferrari to FINALLY deliver a World Championship after such a long drought, I'd be crying before I ever got in the car. To me, Schumacher's like Senna: love him or hate him, he's the best of his era. Imagine what F1 would have been like over the past 6 years had Senna lived... BB

The world feed did it's best to see what was going on by getting behind the curtain, obviously this is there job, to see who it is and what is wrong. (I thought it was Rubens for a minute). Unfortunately it was a very serious thing which they shouldn't have showed but they were quick to remove these pictures once they saw what was happening. It's their job to see what's going on but I would praise the TV director to have enough sense to stay clear of showing these angles when we found out what was happening.

Derek Bell redefines the world "moron"... anything he ever says is virtually killfiled in my brain. I hardly ever hear him anymore. The guy is a moron. That is a word made to describe his pompous ass ignorant self-agrandizing pathetic pile of self. As for Michael's breakdown, I thought it was a cumulative affect of several things, including the Senna thing, and his hardships this year of late. I also thought it was nice of Mika to console him. I remember having a bit of laugh at Mika's breakdown last year... shame on me... I see it a bit differently now. Part of what I love about F1 is the passion and emotional investment of all the lads. -=hammer Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

I remember Tour de France 1995 when a rider (Fabio Casartelli) was killed and some of the front riders didn't know that he was dead before they were asked about it. Lots of riders had a breakdown in front of the camera. I think they knew it, because Michael was wild on the podium, but when he came to the press conference he was much more silent. Jeppe

Don't think so. When he answered the first question (can't remember what it was exactly) I thought there was something not quite so up beat about his reply/answer as if there was something else on his mind. He'd have been in CART. '94 was going to be Senna's last year in F-1. He was sick of the politics and the drive by wire cars. Mike Barton Brown wrote:

How, may I ask, are you qualified to explain why MS was so emotional during the press conference? Did he call you to explain his actions or are you possessed of some psychic powers unavailable to the rest of us mere mortals? It would seem so based on your definitive assertion that you know EXACTLY what he was thinking at the moment. Someone over in RASF1 posted the following translation of an interview conducted after the fact. Guess what, not a word about Senna! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've seen an interview with Schumacher after his emotional outburst during the post-race press conference. This interview can be found at least in these web sites: http://formel1.jubii.dk/nyheder/news.asp?start=4390 http://www.sport1.de/News/Motorsport/Formel1/Meldungen/ schumi_bewegt_die_welt_mel.html Schumacher explained why he cried after the cameras had been turned off. I try to translate the danish version of his explanation. "It's pretty obvious why this victory means so much. We are in Italy. We've had problems with our car in the last couple of races and haven't been as competitive as we wanted to, but now we are back. Even though I don't lead the Championship, the victory was a relief. No doubt about that. This is my 41th victory and I dedicate it to the fantastic fans who I feel even closer to now, and to the 500 Ferrari workers who are trying to make me a World Champion again". I also try to translate the German version (even though I'm not 100% fluent in German): "A big rock has fallen from my heart. This race meant extremely much to me - and then also winning my 41th Grand Prix victory here. That was all a little bit too much for me". ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh, and by the way, he didn't win the race in which Senna was killed. That would have been the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, while this particular race was the Italian Grand Prix at Monza (if you would please bother to check)...

Duh! hows that?? :) Ratzenberger died in practice on the same weekend Senna died, then one or two rounds later somebody else ALMOST got killed at Monaco...(JJ Lehto?) <amazing how the mind fades...I seem to remember it was a driver of a black car, probably the guy who kept getting into shunts with michael andretti that one season mikey went over...anyone???> "Greg Cisko" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CzWv5.50328$
Dave: The injured driver was Karl Wendlinger. The car was a Sauber-Mercedes and it was the very next race - at Monaco. I believe Karl may have won the 24 hours of Daytona this past year too so he has made it back. arcman Dave Henrie wrote:

Lehto was the guy who had the startline accident at Imola causing the pace car to come out. At Monaco, It was the Sauber of Karl Wendlinger that crashed. This effectively ended his F1 career. A black month for Austrian motorsport indeed with one driver dead and another almost following him. From www.planet-f1.com: Speaking to RTL, Schumacher said that his break down in the post race press conference was due to the pressure he had been under racing at Ferrari's home race, but that it was thinking of Ayrton Senna that started the tears. "It was a mixture of many things that moved me in Monza," Michael said. "When I thought of Senna, it was really too much for me." Michael equaled Senna?s total of 41 Grand Prix victories at Monza, and it is clear that the record means a lot. -Gregor
