Firstly - many thanks to Uwe Schrkamp for devising such a brilliant scheme! What would make it even better - in my mind at least - would be for there to be an easy way to see your positional rank i.e. 726 out of 1225. At the moment the only way I can do this is to generate a list of those with GPL ranks within 1000sec on mine, and then scroll to the bottom of the list to see how many GPLRankers there now are. Not very elegant - and not too kind on the servers either (sorry Uwe!) Anyone else think this would be a good idea - or am I weird? Actually - that's a quite separate question in its own right :-) Ian Ian Riches Bedford, UK GPL Rank +50.40

I don't think this is useful, simply because there are people with 2 or 3 entries for F1 & F2 & 3, and without any separation of these groups comparisons are skewed. The same goes for bellcurves and averages. At you're current ranking of ~50 the St Eldred's Cup is what you want to concentrate on. rms [email hidden]

Ian, You can get to know how many driver accounts there are by using the Search Driver Database option and entering something wierd like "xvczxd", it will show the total number of records searched. As Roger says, it's a fairly pointless number, as, to a lesser extent is your position within GPLRank (unless you are, say in the top 100). I started around 500th with a GPLRank of about +120, I'm now +26.xx and 587th! The 107% is a good guide to how you are doing across all tracks, another is to do a b2b against the Papy Benchmark, maybe even knock up a small spreadsheet to see how you fair percentage wise with that. A more true indication of skill would be weighted against aperformance during a race allowing for the following factors: - The track in question - The number of drivers in the race - The number of laps you completed - The chassis you drove as opposed to that of the other drivers - The skill of the other drivers you competed against - The type of race (F1/2/3) - Qual lap time - Fastest lap time The GPL Rank thing is a cute idea, but it doesmn't really prove anything. If ranking included all of the things above (especially the fact that you completed the race), we'd see better racing online instead of boneheads trying to get bumped into the "negative rank" with a killer 1-lap time. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.paddedwall.org/john Barbarian Diecast Collector (420+ cars and counting) http://www.paddedwall.org/diecast DeMONS Scheduler for N3 and NL http://www.paddedwall.org/demons If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

IQ correlates well with intelligence, but in any one individual it is not *necessarily* a true reflection of their intelligence. Similarly, GPLRank correlates with driving ability, but in any one individual it does not *necessarily* reflect their overall racing ability. Does that make sense? I haven't explained it very well. Another way to say it is that, statistically, it is very likely that someone with a GPL Rank of -40 is good at racing. Bendito;

Suddenly I realised I wasn't enjoying it, just trying to move on to the next level like a platform arcade game (where IMO the enjoyment is in the achievement not the taking part). I have recently taken up GPL again accepting the fact I will often be a mid pack racer on VROC and enjoy it. I have purposely avoided GPLRank to stop the obsession factor ruining my enjoyment. This works for me, I prefer close racing to hotlapping. but I can see it forms a reasonable hotlap competition and many would find such a competition enjoyable. Maybe the only way we could get a true racing ability measure for GPL would be for a co-ordinated World league and ranking system. Remember Jack Rambo's NTT world series anyone? Tony

IMHO, this is the only area where VROC is lacking - the ability to rank a player according to observed driving ability (based on the criteria I specified earlier), and to allow people to join races that only meet a minimum standard as set forth by the race admin. Of course, this could undermine the sometimes full-fields we get in some of the pickup races, but we'll only be able to verify that by trying it.

Yes...what we need is either a ladder system, or some sort of league system where there are league servers and you get ranked based on how you finish in random pickup races at the league servers...you would be ranked based on the rank of the people you beat and lose to....Kinda like Raceserver.net for Nascar 3. Sounds like a good idea. In the same way that GPLrank has inspired people to take on tracks that they would not have bothered with, this would hopefully do the same. If people knew that there was some kind of machizmo to be gained out of staying to the end of a race - due to an improved online ranking - then chances are that they would be more likely to continue instead of quitting out and losing some ranking points. It is a good idea, though how it could possibly be implemented is another thing entirely. > <snip> -- Peter Ives - (AKA Ivington) Remove ALL_STRESS before replying No person's opinions can be said to be more correct than another's, because each is the sole judge of his or her own experience.

Makes sense to me, and reality confirms it. You can easily see a parallel between the the results of online league racers and there GPLRank ratings. GPLRank was never meant to "prove anything". The ranking number is only a benchmark, but I would argue that it is a meaningful one. Hotlapping skills are not everything a GPL racer needs, but they are a very large component. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C. Other then a fast lap, what other components are there to say a driver is good/bad? GPLReplay analyser has info we can grab, I made statistics out of a small series I ran from just the results html files. So we know we can grab info, it's just what info would we use? I have my own ideas but it would take two long to list all of them and my reaoning for them in this post. Don Scurlock wrote in message <8FB37BE8Adscurlock@news>...

There are many, but you can sum it up with the term "race craft". It's not something you can always quantify with extracted data,other than seeing that a driver is consistently getting good race results. Things like: Being able to put in a risky fast lap to get up front on the grid, but be smart enough to not try and do those times in a race and risk not finishing, to drive near the edge, but still within your limits. Knowing when to pass, and how to set up a pass. Driving quickly without abusing the car or tires. Not getting sucked into other peoples errors. People have written books about it. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C. GPLRank -5.09 Come see how you rank, at the GPLRank site http://gplrank.ringlord.com/

It already shows the 726, you want it to show the 1225, right? Yeah, good idea, Uwe could show this number at the very top, the total number of F1'ers in the GPLRank list. I'm not sure how he'd filter out the F2'ers and the F3'ers, but if it can be done, great! Bendito;
